Fantastic, huh?!
Getting my books ready for a trip I'm taking this week. The Cuckoo's Calling- for my RL book club
Unnatural Fire- for my alphabet challenge.
I'm saving Shadow of Night- until I hear what next month's challenge is. I just have a feeling that might fit. I'm winking at you Janice.
I finished Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe and loved it! Even though I found several mistakes in the book.. Here's my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...What to read next? I want to start reading The Name of the Wind, but I'm leaving on a holiday next week and don't think I will be finished before then. I could take it with me of course, but it's such a bulky book and I'd rather just bring my ereader.

I quite enjoyed The Cuckoo's Calling. Haven't read the others.

I really enjoyed The Cuckoo's Calling am interested to hear what you think of Unnatural Fire and was so disappointed in A Discovery of Witches that I couldn't bring myself to read the next one. Oh, how I wanted to love that book. It was such a great premise.
Dem, I have added Burial Rites and may try to get it as an audio. Great review.
Shannon- one of my favorite things about this group is the wide opinions on books. I loved A Discovery of Witches fom beginning to end and gave it one of my rare 5 stars. BUT I have talked to a few friends who didn't like it at all- aren't books great that way!I'm glad you enjoyed The Cuckoo's Calling. I am looking forward to reading it.

I have to say it sure made me want to drink good wine and have scrumptious snacks though! lol.
And yes, I love that there are such wide opinions and that they are all so valid. Let me know if the second book is better than the first (I'd be willing to give it another try)
Diana - she drove me up the fricking wall too! She claimed to be a serious researcher, and wanted to stand on her own two feet, yet at the first sign of trouble started behaving like a toddler and throwing a tantrum. Grrr.
I thought the vampire, Matthew, was frankly delicious and he could come over for dinner any time he chose - and have what ever he liked.
I ended up with a mixed feeling 3 stars.

I really liked Blood Makes Noise and would definitely have given it four stars, except I found out at the end that the audiobook version had no author's note. :0/My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Will start She Left Me the Gun: My Mother's Life Before Me b/c it just looks so interesting.
Really enjoyed Way of the Wolf a unique blend of vampire werewolf urban fantasy post apocalyptic fiction type book.
Helen wrote: "Diana - she drove me up the fricking wall too! She claimed to be a serious researcher, and wanted to stand on her own two feet, yet at the first sign of trouble started behaving like a toddler and ..."Bingo, and her knowledge of history was ... lacking.
I am re-reading P.D. James' Death In Holy Orders just because I loved her writing and this is one of two I have only read once. I'm also listening to Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility - I find her books are easier to understand when listened to and performed by the reader.
Marnie wrote: "I'm saving Shadow of Night- until I hear what next month's challenge is. I just have a feeling that might fit. I'm winking at you Janice.."Ha! Just keep on winking....
How long are you going to be gone? When are you leaving? I suppose I could post the October challenge because it's almost the end of September, except I don't have it fleshed out and I've got my real life book club tonight. I'll definitely get it up this week.
One hint - I doubt Shadow of the Night will fit. But then it could if you take it with you. Hehehe! *evil laugh*
No worries Janice! I will only be gone a week so I couldn't read that book until the flight home anyway ( after Oct 1- IF it fits the challenge). I was just trying to get organized...apparently I've been a little scattered lately because I forgot to tell my kids I was heading to Germany. I was sure I had mentioned it but now they think their mom is losing her mind! Perhaps this empty nester freedom is going to my head.Anyway... No hurry on the challenge- my kindle will be loaded for whatever you throw our way....
LOL! I do that too, Marnie. I will get to my destination and then realize that I had forgotten to tell my son I was travelling. He doesn't seem to think it's all that funny to receive a text that says, "By the way... I'm in Vegas!"
I've got 2 on the go:
The Help, because that is this month's bookclub book.
And Platino (although it's called "Platinum" in the UK) on CD in the car. I thought this was going to be a bit trashy, but so far it's looking really good. Although I can see the doom for one of the three ladies, and have an inkling about the second one, the third one is, so far, beyond me.

Thanks Shannon, hope you enjoy it.
I finished White is for Witching which was alright but nothing spectacular. I am now starting my R book Remix as I feel like I'm a little behind on my alphabet. Also still reading my Q book Quantum Theory Cannot Hurt You which I'm working my way through slowly.
Completed She Left Me the Gun: My Mother's Life Before MeMy review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Will now start An Exquisite Sense of What Is Beautiful. The book description says, "A sweeping novel of East and West, love and war, truths and denials." Really? I hope so. I am intrigued.
I have just finished Queen and I which I enjoyed quite a bit. I read it for my ABC challenge and here is my review:http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I finished reading The Handmaid's Tale and need to process it before I can write a review. Next up on audiobook is Speaks the Nightbird.
Chrissie wrote: "Janice, good luck with "Speaks the Nightbird". You will need it."It looks like it's one of those books where people are split. Even my friends' reviews show some 4 stars and some 1 stars. It's also a book recommended by Stephen King.
I bought the book a long time ago on Kindle - can't remember if it was a Kindle deal. Then I picked it up for next to nothing on Whispersinc. I tend to read my audiobooks in the order I purchased them and this one is now at the top of the list. So I will start it and see how it goes. I can always abandon it. :)

Well, my guess is that it will not please you.
I finally finished
for my ABC Challenge. Here is my review. http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...Now I can get back to Rebecca as my R book.
I finished Wolf Hall which was my read for the September monthly challenge and also a buddy read. I loved it and gave it 5 stars. Here is my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Finished The Prisoner of Heaven, the third in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series for the Alphabet Challenge. Now I do want to re-read all three in a row!!!Also finished The Cat's Table for Sea Setting group read
and
From the Mouth of the Whale and The Whale Rider for a Connections Challenge.
Reading Dark Places for a Books Stephen King Recommends group read.
Reading the original story Peter Pan because NOS4A2 and The Child Thief seem similarly themed in the non-Disney version.
Almeta wrote: "Finished The Prisoner of Heaven, the third in The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series for the Alphabet Challenge. Now I do want to re-read all three in ..."The 2nd one has been in my TBR since it came out. Somehow, it gets ignored. I planned to finish my alphabet with it.
I've finifhed The Help. I suspect I'm from time and place too far removed from the setting to be able to relate to the contents. I know some people rave about it. I thought it was interesting - although the written dialect annoyed me a fair few times - but it didn't engage me in a more than "that's interesting" sort of way.
Esther wrote: "The 2nd one has been in my TBR since it came out. Somehow, it gets ignored. If at all possible, I suggest reading Game and Prisoner back-to-back, while still fresh in your mind. If you can't, the story will still hold your interest, but you may have a few pondering moments!
Travis of NNY wrote: "I don't know I started Peter Pan about 6 or7 months ago just couldn't get into it."It is going slowly. I thought, because it is a small book, I'd have it done in no time. Not so!

That's exactly what happened with me
I just finished Me Before You and I had expected more. Here's my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Shannon, I just started book two of Discovery of witches, Shadow of Night, and so far caught my interest quicker than DoW. I have high hopes for this one...

Hmm, that's interesting. I liked Shadow but it was a bit tough for me to get through it. Not sure i want to tackle two more Zafon books. Did you like them?
I have just finished Fevre Dream. I had thought I would get through it quickly as it was only 350 pages - a pretty short book given the length ofGeorge R.R. Martin's other books. It still took me ages to get through - I think the text was shrunk down! It was a good story - very different to Game of Thrones etc. I'm pleased I read it.Now I'm on to Dark Places - it's the first book I've read by Gillian Flynn.
I'll start reading Pretties next. I read Uglies 2 months ago, and although it was entertaining, I wasn't very curious about the next book and didn't feel an urge to start reading it immediately. But I like to finish series I start, unless I really don't like them, so I'll give the second book a go.
Ladyhawk wrote: "Hmm, that's interesting. I liked Shadow but it was a bit tough for me to get through it. Not sure i want to tackle two more Zafon books. Did you like them? ..."
I had a tough time with Shadow as well
Almeta's Review of Shadow of the Wind
Angel's Game gave me trouble also,
Almeta's Review of Angel's Game
but I can't resist The Cemetery of Forgotten Books.
A few more nights and I should finally be done with my w book Doomsday Book and also just started The Shining which I may very well finish and go right into Doctor Sleep but that's getting a bit ahead of myself
Finished An Exquisite Sense of What Is BeautifulMy review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Have started The Sun Also Rises, b/c I feel like another Hemingway. The narration by William Hurt seems good. The Americans sound so terribly "American". Makes me smile.
I also finished An Army of Angels: A Novel of Joan of Arc as my DTB. Njahhhh...... I have read better.
My very short review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I think I will give World of Our Fathers: The Journey of the East European Jews to America and the Life They Found and Made. It is a huge door-stopper.

Ladyhawk wrote: "Shannon, I just started book two of Discovery of witches, Shadow of Night, and so far caught my interest quicker than DoW. I have high hopes for this one..."OK, thanks, I will give it a try as I do want to like it.

I really enjoyed Speaks the Nightbird and the other books in that series. It's an involved, large, dense read, so it takes time to read. So don't expect to read it quickly.
