Persimmon76 | 2 comments I'm thinking of a trilogy, probably published in the last five years, for young adults. I read the first two, then there was a break before the final book came out. The first book was set in two times, but the details I remember most clearly are about the establishment of a school for wizards. The instructors were indifferent to the students and believed they would learn best if they suffered. For instance, the students were deprived of food until they could figure out how to use magic to conjure food. One boy learned to conjure apples, but that was all he could make, and eating nothing but apples was making him ill. The trilogy was very dark with several morally ambiguous characters. Please help!

It's young adult fiction.

Witch & Wizard series

Witch & Wizard
Torn from their parents in a society increasingly controlled by the government, 15-year-old Wisty and her older brother, Whit, are incarcerated in a totalitarian prison where they discover they have incredible supernatural powers.

Witch & Wizard: The Gift
Witch & Wizard: The Fire
Witch & Wizard: The Kiss

Sounds gritty enough. Is that it?

Persimmon76 | 2 comments No, but it does look gritty! Here are more details - amazing how much a person can recall over time! The author is a woman. And at least in the first book the story is told in two times: in the earlier time, I think magic was taboo or obscure. Two friends with magical powers commit to building a school for wizards (I think it's only boys). One of the founders is clearly the leader. At first he seems driven, very single-minded in his purpose, but as the story progresses it becomes apparent that he's morally compromised and will stop at nothing to achieve his ends. His friend (Theo?) is gentler in spirit. He initially hero-worships his companion but gradually comes to see him for who he really is. The gentler character has a chance at love (with a character named Sidda or something like that?), but feels that he must stay with his companion, since he is the only person who can mitigate some of his wrong-doings. The school is founded in total secrecy and is designed to be virtually inaccessible.

In the later time, the POV switches to that of a new student at the school, where the two founders are now instructors. The students are discouraged from working together - in fact, they're supposed to be in terribly fierce competition - but the POV character is determined to find ways to work together to ensure everyone's survival.

Ring any bells?

Shanna_redwind | 852 comments I think I may know this book, but can't place it. Can you think of any other details? Did some of the other kids secretly try to help each other? What did the place that they lived look like?

bookel | 4024 comments You could try searching on worldcat.org advanced search using wizards as keyword and limiting to juvenile fiction book English. Or try wizard school. That kind of thing. Experiment, try different searches. Google books advanced search is broader. Someone else may recognise the trilogy here.

Don't know if this will help, found through Google. Popular wizard school books.
