Marianne Weber | 47 comments I'm not sure the last time I read this much in this short of a period of time! I have a lot going on with school in the next few weeks so I was hoping to get most of my books up by mid-month, so books from me are about to start slowing down a lot.

Great job so far guys! I'm impressed by the number of books already finished for this month! :)

message 102: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Sigh me too. Hopefully I can catch up this weekend.

message 103: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) We're doing really well on categories for the Book a Day Challenge. There are only 7 categories that we don't have 2+ books in: 12, 14, 18, 21, 26, 27, 29. Keep an eye out for them in your reading! :D

It doesn't seem that anyone objects to switching to the Decades Challenge, if that's the case I will let the mods know that we're switching it up.

message 104: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 135 comments What is the decades challenge replacing?

message 105: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Sarah, decades is replacing GottaRead because Vicky found out we could only use 12 total books from it, everything else had to be from the other ones, and with not repeating on the A-Z and just doubling up once on the ABAD, it gave us m more leeway. :)

I'm reading my 3rd book from a separate trilogy now, for 27.

message 106: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) LMAO Vicky. I was looking at your tracker, and you were on there making changes. That was funny to watch. :D

message 107: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Not making any promises about getting these all in but will try to get as many as I can:

I am pretty sure that I have a couple of Christmas themed books for #12 and can try to get one in.

I know I have books for #14 under the 19th Century America setting.

#18, hmm. I might have a romance with either a football player or baseball player hero.

#21 pretty sure I have one or two set in Vegas.

#26 maybe the Australia part. 1700's is not my favorite time period but might have one if I look.

#29 no sure

message 108: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) The one I will finish up here soon (having to share my Kindle with the hubby til Tues, his went kaput) has, so far, 12 (MCs brother is Matthew) and 18 (same brother plays pro football). Should get that done this morning. :)

message 109: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 135 comments I haven't added any books yet. I don't know if any categories will be left?. Does it matter what categories mine are placed in within all the challenge categories? Finishing Gunslinger today and won't work for decades challenge, it was published a long time ago. But this is the revised version.

message 110: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Sarah ~ just add it to the categories where it can be added. It might be a case where Vicky can take one out and move it elsewhere, to fit yours in.

Sarah wrote: "Finishing The Gunslinger today and won't work for decades challenge, it was published a long time ago. But this is the revised version."

Sarah, we will take The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1) by Stephen King as published in 2003, which works for the "Decades" challenge. Steven King revised and expanded it with new story material; therefore, this makes it an exception to the rule.

message 112: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) Like Brooke said, definitely post any categories your book fits and I will organize them as necessary to get everything in!

I'm not even going to start fitting books into categories until we have a bigger chunk of books. It seems silly to fit them as we go along and then change half of them later. :)

message 113: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 135 comments Sounds good

message 114: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) We're doing well with the A-Z as well.

Just looking at the tracker and the books added since the last update, the author initials we still need are ~

GIOQUVXY

When I start my next book (tomorrow or Monday) I'm going to read a Gregg Olsen, that'll take care of two of them. :)

message 115: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I think a book can only be used for one letter right? I can do a Q book. I'll start this on audio tomorrow: Crystal Gardens (Ladies of Lantern Street, #1) by Amanda Quick . Which will also work for the decades and most likely at least a couple of the days.

Wait a minute. I thought it would only count for one? You can't use a book twice?

When I start my next book (tomo..."

message 117: by Karsyn (last edited Sep 08, 2013 09:30PM) (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) I'm not sure. I know for the individual challenge you can use a book for both the first and last name. It may be different for this one.

I started it, can't read it. Decided for something else.

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
For the A-Z challenge chosen a Team may only read one book per letter. However, if you choose a Spell-It-Out for your other challenge, that is a different story.

Thanks for the clarifying. I had forgotten what was said! :)

I ended up reading one with just the O. :)

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Sure, Brooke. ☺

message 121: by Marianne (new)

Marianne Weber | 47 comments I can get V and Y- I have some Kurt Vonnegut and Felicity Young I have wanted to read for a while!

message 122: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Yay Marianne! :) If you take V & Y, Mary mentioned taking Q. I'll start on an I tomorrow (Iris Johansen).

That'll leave us with just ~ GUX :)

message 123: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I know it's only 1 book per letter but isn't it also only 1 letter per book?

Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "I know it's only 1 book per letter but isn't it also only 1 letter per book?"

Yes.

message 125: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I didn't realize until just now reading the Captain's discussion: that we can double up on each little sub category for the days. So if a day has 4 little sub category options, we can use 8 books for that day. I thought it was just 2 max for all of them except the day with the trilogy option.

message 126: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) Nope, we have lots of options for the Book a Day Challenge. I've been recording all the sub-options separately on the spreadsheet. :)

message 127: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I got a good chunk of my Q book done today. I'm very tired and I think I will lay down and listen to some now until I start nodding off. I normally can't listen long when I just lay down. It's good and I'm too tired to do housework so maybe I can get another 10-15 minutes in anyway.

message 128: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) "I" is done.

Gonna find a "G" for my next one.

message 129: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I know I'm behind for this but I will catch up. I have plenty of shorter books and I'll switch to those if I need to. I also have a few that I started and put aside and will try to finish a couple of those.

message 130: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Finished "G".

13 of my 19 completed. :)

message 131: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I am 3 books behind. I feel like I've been reading a lot but still not making any progress. I passed the half-way mark on my Q book. Will try to finish it today if life doesn't get in the way.

message 132: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) I started a "U" book. Will finish it today/early tomorrow.

message 133: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) I just did an update on all the books we've read so far. We are currently at 50/99 books. Our on track for today is 42 books.

I changed the spreadsheet around a bit to add how many books you have left to read.

Marianne made it to her goal, yay Marianne! :)

If anyone is feeling overwhelmed remember that you can pull out by September 20th. I have a light week at work this week so I will be doing another update Wednesday and everyone can assess where they are at that point.

message 134: by Karsyn (last edited Sep 14, 2013 06:57PM) (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Finished the U author book.

Still need VXY

Marianne mentioned working on V&Y. Congrats on getting to your goal!

I'll look for an X tomorrow.

message 135: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) Keep in mind we don't have to finish the A-Z Author Challenge. Obviously the more options, the better, but don't feel like you have to find a weird book to read for the odd letters! ;)

message 136: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Yeah, X might just have to stay undone. I looked a little bit and I can't find anything. LOL!

message 137: by Mary X (last edited Sep 15, 2013 08:55AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) For X the challenge rules say that the letter can be in the name and doesn't have to start with x. I would think that it would apply to using the challenge for this.

I'll see what I have for VXY that will also be good for days & decades.

I need this for another challenge so I think I will read this today as it can be used for something besides V too:

Under the Northern Lights (Granite Lake Wolves, #1 & 2) by Vivian Arend

Correct.

message 139: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 135 comments I just finished a one day read and am starting another one that I should also be able to finish in a day, since I got so behind this month with big books.

message 140: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) Everyone was power reading this weekend, yikes!

I haven't updated the tracker list of all the new books since yesterday, but I did update the number of books everyone has read so you can see your updated goals and such.

We are now at 62 books (12 since I updated yesterday!), so we are at 62.6%.

Everyone is just about on target except for Andrea. She hasn't posted any books yet this month, so I sent her a message yesterday to make sure everything is okay. Hopefully I hear from her and she's been reading but is too busy to check-in on Goodreads! I'll keep everyone updated on that front.

I've talked to the mods and, as a worst case scenario, we will be able to remove her from the challenge on Friday if we do not hear from her before then. I do hope we hear from her and don't have to resort to that, but I wanted to make sure you all knew so no one was stressing over having to read extra books. :)

message 141: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (deja05) I'm still around, just busy with work and other stuff. I read a couple of books and I'll post them now. Don't worry, I didn't forget about the challenge!

Moderators of NBRC | 1212 comments Mod
Great to know, Andrea. We were worried about you. You haven't missed a Sunday Update since the challenge started. ☺

message 143: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Hi Andrea. We were hoping it was just real life getting in the way temporarily.

message 144: by Mary X (last edited Sep 16, 2013 10:28AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Ok if I am reading the spreadsheet right (and taking into account the most recently finished books): it looks like we have few books from 2003-2008 finished and still have spots open for days 14, 26 & 29.

So I will see what I have to fit those days and years. Yes I know we don't have to finish any specific challenge but it doesn't hurt to aim to fill in some gaps.

A lot of the books I counted for the years will be used for days & letters, just figured I'd look for years where we are very short so far.

eta: ok I am loaded down with books from those years so will aim for some shorter ones since I am behind.

message 145: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) I'll be starting a 26 (on a ship) tomorrow. Can't say when I'll get it finished, but I'll start it late tonight or first thing in the morning. It's Patterson, so it should be a quick read.

Treasure Hunters by James Patterson

14 I've got nothing. I'll look at the 30s list to see if I have anything, or would read anything.

message 146: by Sarah (last edited Sep 16, 2013 10:49AM) (new)

Sarah | 135 comments Not done - just doing this now

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro by Kazuo Ishiguro
Author - I,K
Decades - 2005
Book a Day - 3. Love triangle or three best friends.

message 147: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I've wanted to read The Secret History * Cat's Cradle from the 30's list. The 2nd book list link on that challenge doesn't work for me.

Anyway, I got in line for the ebooks at my library so we'll see if I get them in time.

I think I'm going to read a romance from 2009 because I need the state (SD) for another challenge and it also fits the 19th century America setting for #14.

message 148: by Marianne (new)

Marianne Weber | 47 comments I read Great Gatsby and its on the 30 Books Everyone Should Read... list that is linked with the A Book A Day Challenge for #29 if that helps out at all. If not- I am finishing up a Kurt Vonnegut novel tonight and have one more I need to read for the A-Z challenge and then I can read something else from the list pretty easily!

message 149: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) I know I am behind for this but I am hoping to finish 2 short romances I have started today and I started a shorter audiobook.

I'm going away for the weekend so going to try and get some short books in before that. I will probably get some reading done over the weekend too. I have nothing planned in real life for the last week of September either.

message 150: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) Ooh. I just looked and my local library branch has the audio version of Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut that's on the read by 30 link. Plus it gives me another book for my 1001 Books To Read Before You Die challenge on which I am whoefully behind. It's short to so win-win.

I have to go the library to get an available hold anyway.
