Karen A. Wyle (kawyle) | 107 comments Those of you who read ebooks: what format can/do you read, and in particular, do you read .epub, .mobi/.prc, or both?

I'm asking because Smashwords has just made preordering possible for its premium distribution (B&N, Kobobooks, iBookstore, etc.). I have a hunch that Amazon will respond by making preorders available to indie authors for the first time -- IF they're part of Kindle Select. If this happens, authors who want to take advantage of preordering will have to choose for which platform to publish.

Interesting. I didn't know Amazon allowed anything EXCEPT .mobi. For me, I have a Samsung tablet and a first gen Kindle, the latter of which I nowadays only use when Amazon forces me to, with Prime freebies, etc.

I've got a PDF reader, Overdrive and the Amazon app on the tablet, so I guess I can read anything. Though I really don't like pure PDFs for novels, somehow. And I'm still not all that comfortable with either EPub or Mobi. I have a difficult time making notes, marking passages, etc., with both, sadly.

Ooh you will enjoy using the Kobo. I've had one for a couple of years now and love it. The only time I have a hard copy of books now is for my knitting and only if I can't get an epub of a book I really really want to read.

I like my nook but wish i would have got an IPAD because you can get all the different types of reading apps, which means you can shop around for the best price on books instead of being stuck using the store specific to your device kindle-amazon nook- B&N

Stan Morris (morriss003) Those of you who own a Nook should check out this site.

https://www.n2acards.com/

This is a microSD card that will transform your Nook into an android tablet. I've bought one for my Nook Color and my wife loves it.

You're right, I love my Kobo! I'm using Epub and pdf on it and both are fine. I don't bother with highlighting text or stuff like that. I just read! The only bummer is it won't accept my debit card so I can't buy anything! I'm having to rely on just free books at Kobo and Smashwords.

message 21: by Sera (new)

Sera (seracatty) @ Chucklesthescot I'm from the Netherlands, so I'm not sure how it works in the uk. But I can buy books from their website with paypal or ideal (an electronic banktransfer method we have here) and then transfer them to your kobo. It's is a little more work, but it works. you can also buy books at other stores and transfer them to your kobo. So really, no need to live of the free books :)

message 22: by Sera (new)

Sera (seracatty) I prefer epub but with Calibre you can make .epub into .mobi and the other way around (and other extensions as well). So it wouldn't be horrible if they were in .mobi since I know many of the readers in America have kindles. Also I think kobo can use .mobi as well.

message 23: by Yzabel (new)

Yzabel Ginsberg (yzabelginsberg) | 247 comments .pub and .mobi/.prc, sometimes .pdf. It all depends whether I use my ereader or my smartphone.

Chris Bostic (chrisbostic) | 35 comments The kids read on a Nook. They get everything through B&N.
I use epub's by using the Kindle app. Rarely I would look at a PDF.
