Fortune's Rocks
question
Haskell's love for Olympia

I once read somewhere about how it is very debatable if John Haskell fell in love with Olympia at the beach, when he first saw her, or if his attraction was purely sexual, caused by lust. Do you think he loved her from the beginning, or did he start loving her after they began their affair?
It's been a while since I have read fortune's rocks but I think he fell in love with her that moment he saw her on the beach and not when the affair began. He did seem reluctant to admit to his feelings, something I think you'd do if you have genuine affections you're ashamed of.
I just read this book last week so it's fresh on my brain. I, personally, don't believe in love at first sight. Love--true love--encapsulates so much more than mere physical attraction, and just looking at someone doesn't tell you much about their mind or soul; certainly not enough to fall in love with them. So, in answer to your question: no. I don't think he loved her right at first. He wanted her, absolutely, but he didn't love her yet. I think that came after, once he got to know her. But, I do believe he loved her before the affair began. He said more than once that he wished he was the one who came to her, and it's my opinion that he did not because he loved her and did not want to put her in such a dangerous situation. He denied himself for her sake, essentially. However, once she came to him, he couldn't help himself. I loved this book by the way!
He was very attracted to her, that was well stated. When they were working closely together he gave into his feelings, and they both succumbed to their desire for one another.
