I'm always curious about what people are excited to read next. So what's on your to-read?

I have a few on the go right now, but what I'm looking forward to right now are:

Keep Your Crowbar Handy by SP Durnin

The rest of this series, apocalyptic but not zombie:
Yesterday's Gone by Sean Platt and David Wright

And totally not zombie in any way:
Captain Vorpatril's Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Hi Elizabeth
Well the new month begins tomorrow and with it my monthly challenges start up.
I'll be reading the zombie group's book of the month
Mountain Man
I'm currently completing a R4R Soldier Boy: The Adventures of Bryce Tyconnel: Book One by goodreads author
Thomas L. Marshall
I have signed up for the reading challenge of the month of August for the goodreads group YA Apocalyptic and Dystopian Fiction on the difficult level (9-13 books)
I've cued up three titles so far for that challenge; Our book of the month and

Supernatural Freak by goodreads author Louisa Klein

And Until the End of the World by goods read and zombie group author Sarah Lyons Fleming
As part of my yearly goodreads challenge I need to read 17.75 books a month to get to my end goal of 213 books read AND reviewed.. The reading is the easy part its the reviewing that's a challenge. :-)
So I've got a lot more books to read this month .:-)

Ian McClellan | 294 comments I'm reading The Hanging Tree: A Zombie Novel (fantastic so far) and hope I'm done in time to start reading Mountain Man

I am going to make myself read Mace of the Apocalypse and Voyage of the Dead after that. They've both been sitting in my Kindle for a while and it's beyond me why I haven't read either of them yet. Also want to get to Jango's Anthem because the original was awesome.

Michele (duchessmichele) | 1 comments Just want to mention Voyage of the Dead as a good zombie read, also TW Browns Zomblog and Dead series.

In October I'm going to take a zombie break and probably read Ghost Story and The Graveyard Book.

Alisha | 34 comments Well I put books on hold at the library and they conveniently come in at the same time.

I got Deck Z, a zombie titanic book, and dead of night.

Feed was a good one. I would recommend it. For some reason I lost momentum with the series though.

David | 7 comments I am currently working my way through John Dies At The End. It has been good but hasn't captured me enough to give it my undivided attention. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18...

Anyone ever read his other one? http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/12...

I read both of them last month. I actually liked the second one a bit better. Some of the pacing issues in the first one have been overcome in the second one.

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Laurie, I love that series but haven't read the last one. I hope its good. :-)

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Every of often, I need to step out of a genre (well, sub-genre) and read something different.
I have a not so secret love for urban fiction, paranormal detective stories.
Like Jim Butcher Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher Harry Dresden Files
And Kim Harrison Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison Rachel Morgan series
And of course Dean Koontz Odd Thomas (Odd Thomas, #1) by Dean Koontz Odd Thomas series.
A couple months back I stumbled across Goodreads author John G. Hartness Voodoo Children - A Bubba the Monster Hunter Short Story by John G. Hartness Bubba the Monster Hunter short story series and it has become my latest guilty pleasure.
The stories are more like episodes in that they aren't really a complete story and rely heavily on the reader continuing the series to pieces together the overall series direction.
But they go on sale frequently, are humorous, have a likeable characters, include a wide variety of paranormal creatures, and at least one kick-butt action scene.
I tend to collect a couple of them to read in one sitting.
I finished Ballet of Blood - A Bubba the Monster Hunter Short Story by John G. Hartness and Footloose - A Bubba the Monster Hunter Short Story by John G. Hartness
A few days ago.
I am currently reading Hall & Goats - A Bubba the Monster Hunter Short Story by John G. Hartness and Sixteen Tons - A Bubba the Monster Hunter Short Story by John G. Hartness

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) I keep losing this thread..
OK currently I am reading The Zombie Apocalypse (Corporate Survival, #2) by C.T. Horner The Zombie Apocalypse by C.T. Horner.
I read the first book in the series a couple months ago, it was really good.
This one opens in with a rape scene, although it is not graphically described. I've pushed forward to 11% and it seems to be done with that and back to the original cast of characters (Whew).
I just finished reading and reviewing Megan (Breadcrumbs For The Nasties, #1) by Steven Novak Megan by Steven Novak.. I liked that book a lot. I plan on following the series.
I also completed reading/reviewing Zombie Wake by Storm J. Helicer Zombie wake by Storm J. Helicer this morning. It was an OK read, with some good parts and some "not as good" parts. Overall it's a decent read.

What are you all currently or recently reading?

message 16: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments I agree with Tammy that sometimes you need a change of pace to step out of a particularly category. I also like to read by theme, sometimes. So, Halloween is coming up, then the holiday season. I'm looking foward to a few zombie-themed Christmas stories, such as
Dead Christmas A Zombie Anthology by Anthony Giangregorio

which is lined on up on my reader.

Sometimes I'll do a month of werewolf stories, or pirate stories, or romance novels. With series, I usually have to alternate between books, as very few series keep my interest long enough for me to get past part two or three in a row.

Saria | 8 comments I'm DYING to read Dog Blood and The Forest of Hands and Teeth.

message 18: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) I've got so many books on my to-read list its utterly ridiculous! I was wondering if anyone has read Robin Decker's (I believe that's correct) 'Brains'. Also wondered if anyone has read S.G. Browne's 'Breathers.' Both are absolutely worth the read. I am into many different genres, not just zombies. Its a SEVERELY overloaded genre, IMO, and its hard to weed the good from the bad. Also, has anyone read the master of them all, Wade Davis' 'The Serpent and the Rainbow'? I think that without that book, we wouldn't have even half of the interest in zombies we have now, if any. He brought 'zombis' straight from Haitian voodoo rituals to mainstream culture...

I would recommend The Forest of Hands and Teeth - push it up your to-read list!

I agree, there's a lot in the zombie lit genre and it's hard to separate out the wheat from the chaff. I appreciate any good recommendations for the next good read...

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Netanella,
I would love to suggest a title to you, yet we differ on the books that we both enjoy. I doubt that there will be a good read that we will match up on, but here is my recommendation never the less.
Look to see if you own this book
Out of Darkness (The Starborn Saga, #1) by Jason D. Morrow Out of Darkness by Jason D. Morrow.
Now I admit that this is one of my most favorite indie authors, but Randy and I seldom agree on a books rating, and we both gave that book 5 stars. For different reasons but never-the-less, we both gave it was a five star reviews.
If you do not own that book, I am willing to loan it to you via amazon book loans.

message 21: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments Awesome - I have it in my Kindle cloud. I'll start it up next... I still have
Zombies Inc. Zombie, Inc. by Christine Dougherty for the BOTM, and I'm still working through
Anton Troia's The Last Overseer The Last Overseer by Anton Troia and
GRRM's Game of Thrones A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin , which are both very dense reads.

BTW, a disagreement on Reapers doesn't necessarily mean we won't like other books in common. Thanks!

message 22: by Tammy K. (new)

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) I am doing the buddy read on Darlings of Decay by Tamara Rose Blodgett which is five books 2x a week (short stories)
I am going to finish up Sunrise by Kody Boye I'm at 48% on that.
I plan on reading Zombies Inc Zombie, Inc. by Christine Dougherty sometime this month but not in the BOTM
from there I do not have any set titles, it will be whatever squeaks the loudest.
I like to read multiple books at once though and I have to read a little over 17 books a month to keep up my goodreads 2013 challenge.

message 23: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresatheterrible) I don't know if anyone's tried the 'My Life As A White Trash Zombie' series yet, but I loved it. And sorry I can't hyperlink the book's title...I don't know how, for one, and I'm stuck using a tablet, so I'm not sure it will even let me...

message 24: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments I have it on my cloud but haven't tried it yet. What did you like about it?

Is there an "add book/author" link visible above the comment box on your tablet? If so, that's how you do those fancy links.

Guess what? I figured out the hyperlink! WOO-hoo!!! I think the problem was I always use the app and it severely limits what you can do. Anyway, I think I liked it because A. It's a series, and I'd been looking for a good series for a while. I read all 3 within a week or two, and that's unusual for me. ADD tends to make me lose focus, so if I can finish all 3, that says a lot. B. My family has a history of addiction, and that's how this series starts...with a pill popping 'loser', who's life changes drastically after waking up in the E.R. The addiction parts really resonated with me C. I like the more human zombies...this series contains zombies that, while feeding on human brains from morgues and such, retain control over their urges, and blend in with regular people. D. I personally thought the pacing, character development, and fast paced story telling was spot-on. I'm kinda what most people would call 'white trash.' I don't take it as an insult. I guess that's kinda what made me 'bond' with Angel sooooo much. Her father is basically exactly like mine, she works a dead end job, and basically had no chance to make anything of her life (not because she wasn't capable, but because she had no faith in herself). That reminds me A LOT of myself a year or so ago, and her personal journey sounds eerily like mine (without becoming a zombie, unfortunately lol). Maybe I liked it so much because it spoke so loudly to ME, but I really think it was a great series that others would enjoy as well. My library ordered them especially for me! Made me feel like the hero Angel Crawford turns out to be ;-) And watch this...here's the links!

My Life as a White Trash Zombie My Life as a White Trash Zombie (White Trash Zombie, #1) by Diana Rowland Even White Trash Zombies Get the Blues Even White Trash Zombies Get the Blues (White Trash Zombie, #2) by Diana Rowland White Trash Zombie Apocalypse White Trash Zombie Apocalypse (White Trash Zombie, #3) by Diana Rowland
It seems to me that she's releasing another book to the series each June or July, so I can't wait to see what happens to Angel next year! I highly recommend!

message 26: by Netanella (new)

Netanella | 2108 comments Link! I have the first "My Life" on my cloud (in my cloud...?), but didn't start it when I saw it was a part of a series. Does that ever play a role in anyone's decision to start or not start a book if they are in a larger series?

BTW, Teresa, you might really enjoy Sophie Littlefield's Aftertime Aftertime (Aftertime, #1) by Sophie Littlefield , which also features a seriously flawed female character.

Yes! My Life As A White Trash Zombie! Funny snarky, just like me! I quite enjoyed that series, though I haven't read the latest yet.

I prefer it when I see a book is part of a series - partly because I read a lot, and partly because that means it hasn't utterly failed.
