Oliver Twist question

Well, I suggest you finish the book and decide for yourself. I have never read the abridged version, only the original, and my opinion of her changed as I read: In the beginning I disliked her, half way through I began to pity her and in the end I almost admired her, I say almost because I was still so sorry for her there was hardly any room for admiration. But to answer directly, if I were to let all the characters stand on a stage and rate them for bravery, yes, I think she would very likely end up on one of the gold-medal steps.

Maybe. The Dodger himself was pretty damn brave for a little kid. He understood that no adult could be trusted completely, and he had sort of a feral wisdom. I don't even want to know what a social worker would say about him.

Nancy...yes, really courageous, but to me she is also emblematic of battered and abused women everywhere. She sings "As Long As He Needs Me" in the theatrical version, and if we buy this as her motivation, she has deluded herself into believing that she is somehow the exception to Sykes's wrath.

I wish either the book or movie version--depending perhaps on literacy level--could be required for all adolescent girls.
