Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion

TT2-September BAP Challenge-Post if finished here.
Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Do the challenges picked need to have enough options not to have team members read the same letter? For example, on the A to Z challenge, is the team only allowed to have one book for each letter? Or can anything the members read count as long as it fits the challenge?
In a straight 26 letters, A-Z Challenge, one book per letter per member.
However, in an A-Z - S.P.E.L.L. I.T. O.U.T. challenge, you may pick "T" - T.I.G.E.R. and "C" - C.A.T. which would give you two "T"s, if you wanted them.
2. Are you going to set a limit for spell out challenges? Because I have one I would think the team could attempt in order to incorporate everyone, but it is a lot of spell out.
Nope. No limit. Just remember to meet the minimum of the other two categories.
3. For the "Book a Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay Reading Challenge", can two team members read for the same option or can we only use each option once? If we can only use it once, it would give us a max of 31 books from this challenge.
Actually, we made that a little tricky with #27:
#4. For the challenge we pick, we just need to read books that fit options from that challenge, we don't actually have to complete the challenge, correct? What if we choose something like the "Stuck in a Rut Reading Challenge", where it required 2 books with your favorite color on the cover and 4 new to you authors - would we need to adhere to those or just read books that fit either option?
Correct. You do NOT need to complete the challenge. You may elect a lower level or just leave it incomplete. With regards to "Stuck in a Rut," that would be fine.
#5. I had someone leave because they said participating was too much work).
Participation in the Mod BAP Challenge is never mandatory. Captains (or designated person posting challenge) may use books of those Team Members not actively participating in the monthly challenge.
Remember, you ladies (and a couple of guys) may use your regular and 'blinkie' cupcakes!

Actually, we made that a little tricky with #27:
#27– Is the perfect cube (3 X 3 X 3). Read a book from 3 different trilogies - yes, that means 3 books - Or read a book about a mathematic riddle or code, books like The Da Vinci Code or The Eight are good examples for this one.So, you could read 33 books for the challenge. One book per day (option), however.

9% of 90 is 8.1 books. Or does the 9% refer to the whole 90 books?
Does 9% of your books from each of three challenges mean:
-9 books to fit into A Book a Day
-9 books to fit into an A-to-Z Challenge
-9 books to fit into other random challenge from NBRC
-the rest can be anything
Or does it mean all 90 books must fit into one of those 3 challenges?
Good questions, VV. We were thinking that all book would fit into those three challenges. We may lower the number. We are discussing it in the Captains' Group and would welcome your input.
FYI, there is some talk of having a Team's goal being a percent of their goal. (Not everyone is at 1350.) This would be after those players who are "outliers" (way, way high... or way, way low) are adjusted.
Still preliminary, but we wanted to keep you posted:
Preliminary Info on September BAP Challenge: (Revision V)
Goal: Total number of your “Team within a Team” participants will need to read a percent of their total goal to earn Book Advantage Points (BAPs). The breakdown is as follows:
• We will allow members to “double up” on days for the A Book a Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay Reading Challenge; however, not for the A-Z challenge, nor any Spell-It-Out. Of course, if you spell T.I.G.E.R. and C.A.T. (using two "T"s., that is acceptable).
• There must be at least one book in the remaining two challenges, unless you have met your goal in the first challenge.
• Yes, your Team may have only one participant.
• If one member wants to read more to make up another member’s percent, that is fine.
• You do NOT need to complete the selected challenges; just fit your books to the three you choose.
• To give you an advantage, we will round down instead of up to determine the number of books you read.
• Any Team participant at 70% or higher of her (or his) yearly TTRC ‘target goal’ by the August 18th Sunday Update will be considered an ‘outlier’ and will have their goal adjusted for the September BAP Challenge to below 70%. (Remember, this is based on the TTRC ending April 11, 2014. To be ‘on target’ on that day, a Team or participant would be at 35%.)
• Someone who has had the summer off and is returning to school, has a new job, or has a special event planned in September, etc., may ask for special consideration of their goal.
• Referring to our challenges, choose books that fit:

Spell It Out - is available in many of the challenges.
Your Team just needs to select books from the sub-options in the Book a Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay Reading Challenge . How many books you read is determined by your goal.
Below is an example of a category's sub-options restrictions. The example we use is for Category #4 from the challenge:
Two (2) books per Book A Day Challenge sub-option. Using Category #4 as an example we have two (2) books with a red/blue/white cover, two (2) books set on the US, two (2) books with the US flag on the cover. Or two (2) books where the main character is fighting for his independence or for some greater good.
That is a total of eight (8) books for Category #4. Some categories allow more, some are less.
*Here are A-Z Challenge. The Animal Alphabet Reading Challenge, Cooking & Cookware A-Z, and Herbs & Spices A-Z, etc. actually count as Spell-It-Out challenges.

Goal: Total number of your “Team within a Team” participants will need to read a percent of their total goal to earn Book Advantage Points (BAPs). The breakdown is as follows:
9.9% = 4 BAPRules: Your Team must have a minimum of one-third (1/3) of your books from the first challenge, A Book a Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay Reading Challenge. You may then choose the rest, in any percent each of the next two NBRC challenges you choose.
8.33 to 9.8% = 2 BAP
7 to 8.2 = 1 BAP

Example• We will be happy to calculate your “Team within a Team” goal for you. Yes, you may adjust it, if more players wish to join after the start of the month.
Let’s say a player is at 80% of her yearly goal of 100. We would adjust their monthly goal upward for the September from 100 to 115 (69.56%). This would mean she would need to read 9.57 books to reach 8.33%, or 11.38 books to reach 9.9%.

The percent we are looking at is your yearly Tower Team Reading Challenge percent. Added TTRC ‘target goal’ to revision in Post #8.
Tomorrow, after the SU, I will show an example.
Tomorrow, after the SU, I will show an example.
Tomorrow, to be 'on target,' everyone would at 35% or higher of their TTRC goal. We chose 70% as an 'outlier,' because it is double that.
Clarification Question
: "What about those individuals who are at lower than 35%? It looks like they don't get theirs adjusted to lower what they have to read for the challenge."
They are certainly welcome to lower their 'target goal,' if they so desire, even if it is just for September. It is relatively easy and painless.

Change a Goal:
• Have member go to their Team Home Page Challenge.
• Click on Update my entry (blue arrow).
• This will cause the screen below to 'dropdown.'
• Enter new goal in the field after My goal is to read ___...
• There is NOT need to re-enter the bookshelf name. In fact, it is best they don't, unless they do a straight "cut & paste" from their bookshelves. Otherwise, there is too much likelihood they'll mess it up.![]()
The Short and Sweet of the Mod's September Challenge for BAPs:
• As a team you need to read between 7% and 9.9% of your total team participant goal in order to get any BAPs.
• 1/3 of these books needs to fit into the Book a Day challenge of which you may double up and the remaining books need to fit into:(1) One A-Z challenge which is not a spell-it-out.
(2) One other NBRC challenge.

Book Advantage Points. ☺
In another words that are 'books' that count for the team after team finishes challenge or exchanges cupcakes.
For example, your team has read 594 books, but with BAP's you have 625 books.

Required Books Totals, ‘Outliers’ & Goal Adjustments:
-- Revision 2
The Mods and Countess Paige have done the calculations needed for the Mods September Challenge in order to earn Book Advantage Points (BAPs).
If you refer to the Sunday Update Spreadsheet and go to your Team’s tab along the bottom, you will see columns E though H now show the September numbers.
Just to refresh your memory of the BAPs ranges:
• Any member NOT participating will have their row made empty and white. (As shown in Screens #1 & #2, blue arrow, for Gemma out on Maternity LOA.) {All members have their numbers filled in, until the Captains notify us who is or is not participating.}
Close Up of Adjustments:

Screen #1• We have rounded downward for each individual. For example, if everyone participates -- except for the member out on MLOA -- the Hobbits will need to read 93 books to make the minimum 7% (purple underline in Screen #2) to get any BAPs.

Close Up of Adjustments:

• Column E shows the Adjusted Goal in book totals (orange diamond, Screen #3). {This number is calculated by the Team Member’s number of books read as of the Sunday Update of 8/18/2013 in column AF, which is not show in the example. This number will NOT change through the September challenge, unless someone appeals.}
• Column F shows the number of books required to be read by that member at 8.33%. This is the ‘on-target’ goal of 8.33% (first red arrow, Screen #3).
• Column G shows the 7%, the lowest to receive any BAPs (second red arrow, Screen #3).
• Column H shows 9.9%, the highest to receive any BAPs (third red arrow, Screen #3).Screen #3 - close up of another TeamSPECIAL NOTE: Captains, please notify us in this thread by August 31st as to who is participating so that we may update the SU.![]()

We really like what Mango Tango (who has declined our Mods’ September Challenge for BAPs) has done with their
Mango Tango's September Straight Percentage Challenge.
So, we are giving you this as another option, although not for as many points as ours. If you do ours you will now get more than double than what we originally posted for each percent.

If your Team chooses MT's Straight Percent, you'll get:9.9% = 9 BAPs

Joanne♥, it is based on 9.9% of those participating. I have updated your pages of the SU to reflect those three members (Erica, Stacie, and you); 9.9% would be 37 books for this "team within a Team" - so, if you want to read more and someone else less, that is fine.

I understand we need to do:
1. Book a Day
2. A - Z
3. One more
My question: For the "one more" do we all need to use the same challenge? Or can we use 3 different ones?
(i.e., can I use Cooking A - Z, and someone else use Disney Princess?)
Thank you!

Sandy, you need to work as a Team and together do the other two challenges.

CLARIFICATION:
While two members may overlap (or double up) on the options and sub-options for the A Book a Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay Reading Challenge, they may NOT overlap (or double up) on the A-Z challenge they choose.
If you choose something like the September 2013 Takeover Challenge for you 'other' challenge, you may (like the "Book a Day Keeps the Boredom a Bay") use each option twice.

For option 27, if a participant chooses the trilogy option, does that count as reading 3 books for the purpose of the BAP challenge?
Secondly, if Participant A reads one book in a trilogy, and Participant B reads the other two, would that satisfy the requirement for that option, or do all three need to be read by the same person?

#29 - and holding. Read a book where the main character is about to turn 30.
I have a book where the MC is about to turn 30. She turns 30 within the first 25% of the book though (and it is a big deal). Can I count it for day 29?
Ashley Marie wrote: "For option 27, if a participant chooses the trilogy option, does that count as reading 3 books for the purpose of the BAP challenge?
I'm not positive I understand the question, Ash, so I'll try to answer more than you asked.
If they read three books from different trilogies, yes all three count towards the challenge.
Two people could do this, for a total of six books.
Ashley Marie wrote: "Secondly, if Participant A reads one book in a trilogy, and Participant B reads the other two, would that satisfy the requirement for that option, or do all three need to be read by the same person?
Yes and no. You may do it this way, if you like. The books are supposed to be from different trilogies. We will allow one person (Participant A) to read books from three different trilogies and a second person (Participant B) to read from those exact same trilogies. However, the same person can NOT read two books from one of the trilogies they choose.
Make sense?

Thanks, Mods!
Sorry for the confusion, everyone. This challenge seems to have gone through more revisions than any other. So much for a simple challenge.
Anyway, we added a line on everyone's page of the SU, below the totals, that reflect what 1/3 of the books would be (for the 'Book a Day...' portion of the challenge) for that percent. Indicated below, with the pink arrow:
By the way, the 'Book a Day...' portion is a Team goal total. In otherwords, you may have a participating member not fit any of their books into that challenge, and another do all their books so they apply.

What if the same person does a second set of 3 books for different trilogies, can they use a different book from the same trilogy as the 1st set? I am thinking, from your previous answer, I will need to find another book to qualify for the second set, but I just wanted to make sure first. I am reading these books anyway and am trying to figure out as many categories as possible for them to fit into.
For example, I have read one set:
#1 Just One Kiss by Susan Mallery
#2 The Newcomer by Robyn Carr
#3 Sea Glass Island by Sherryl Woods
Could I now read as a second set:
#1 Big Sky Summer by Linda Leal Miller
#3 Against the Mark by Kat Martin
#3 The Hero by Robyn Carr
Some of these books are parts of larger series that have been released in sets of trilogies and you previously said that would be OK to use them as trilogies.

Yes, if a trilogy has been expanded, that is fine. Just shows you picked a winner. ☺

1. For #1 - One word Title, would A, An, The count? For example, would The Uninvited count as one word or two word title?
2. Would you accept

Thanks!

Goal: Total number of your “Team within a Team” participants will need to read a percent of their total goal to earn Book Advantage Points (BAPs). The breakdown is as follows (see Post #20 below for increase in BAPs and another Mango Tango Option): Rules: Your Team must have a minimum of one-third (1/3) of your books from the first challenge, A Book a Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay Reading Challenge. You may then choose the rest, in any percent each of the next two NBRC challenges you choose.
• Any Team participant at 70% or higher of her (or his) yearly ‘target goal by the August 18th Sunday Update will be considered an ‘outlier’ and will have their goal adjusted for the September BAP Challenge to below 70%. (Remember, this is based on the TTRC ending April 11, 2014. To be ‘on target’ on that day, a Team or participant would be at 35%.) • We will be happy to calculate your “Team within a Team” goal for you. Yes, you may adjust it, if more players wish to join after the start of the month.
• Someone who has had the summer off and is returning to school, has a new job, or has a special event planned in September, etc., may ask for special consideration of their goal.
• Referring to our challenges, choose books that fit: These links might help:

Monthly/Season Challenge Index
Spell It Out - is available in many of the challenges.
Your Team just needs to select books from the sub-options in the Book a Day Keeps the Boredom at Bay Reading Challenge . How many books you read is determined by your goal.
Below is an example of a category's sub-options restrictions. The example we use is for Category #4 from the challenge: Example of a Category's Sub-options Restrictions
