Anyone have any suggestions for good non-fiction non-bio? I don't have a single one on my TBR any more. Had to read one on my first round, and now landed on it again. Since it's not a real shelf, I'm not even sure where to start browsing.

How about one of Erik Larson's books. They are non-fiction stories of true crimes and really good. Another series that my sister and I have found really interesting are the History of books, like: A History of the World in 6 Glasses.

This is tight timing! I've started The Iron King for my Community Chest book, but that means I have to finish it in Sept. Meanwhile, I started planning Part 5. It turned out to be a very short section!

Oops. I have a procedural question.
I started The Iron King for my Community Chest book on Sept 27, and almost finished it last night (9/30), but not quite.
Since it's now October, do I need to pick a different book to complete that task, one that is on the Novellas shelf rather than the Debut shelf? Or can I count The Iron King since I was almost done before October arrived?

No need to change, Susan. Whenever you started reading, that's the month's shelf you should read. Cheers!

Sorry I seem to have so many questions. This one is about the sub-categories.
*Mystery > Crime : 100 points
*Mystery > Thriller : 100 points
*Mystery > Classic: 120 points
There are a number of things with Mystery on the book page that on later pages show shelved as Crime, or Thriller. But I don't see people labeling Classic Mysteries as "Classic." Do we just use our judgment on that, and decide which of those 3 sub-categories a mystery best fits in? I've just drawn "*Mystery > Classic," and am not sure how to tell whether a book qualifies.

yes - since you didn't fork out any $...
2 examples of Mystery > Classic:
The Mystery of a Hansom Cab
The Adventures of Sherlok Holmes
If you see on both book pages, there's "Mystery" and if you click the 'more top shelves' - "classic" is there on first column... hoping that I understoond your question correctly and have answered it proper

Yes, that answered my question. I just wasn't seeing "classic" listed anywhere, on many mysteries I would think should be there. I guess I think of "classic mystery" as a type of mystery, but this means it needs to be something old as well, something people consider to be a "classic" in addition to a mystery.
Thanks, Bea. I found an Agatha Christie I have on my Nook at the top of the page, so that will work.

It won't matter, because I'm happy to read the Christie, but I had been wondering, for example, about The Railway Detective, which sounds to me like it will be classic style, but is not truly old and classic.

I have a question about the ending of the game. The rules state, "Challenge open for 4 months (up to 30 November 2013) and whoever completed the challenge at the end of 4 months with highest points "wins"!"
For those of us who have completed one or more rounds, will our final score be the score we've obtained as of the date of the end of the contest? Or is it the score at the end of the last completed section (i.e., the last time we arrived at GO)?
And, when we arrive at GO, do we claim those 200 points in that Cycle, or the next one? I see Coralie has claimed it when she arrives, but you and Karen have not.
I also have a question about my "complete" score, posted in message 5. You've recorded 1570, but that's what I earned on part 4 only. Should parts 1, 2 & 3 be included in the total? That would be 2670. Or, if it only includes the amount of part 4 until I arrived at Go, I think the total would be 2170. I can split up my posts to make it more clear once I'm sure where/how you cut things.

um, it's too late at night for me to think because all I read was a jumble of letters, ha ha ha...
though I think this might answer it...
the final score will be the score at the end of last completed section on 30 November
I didn't claim the last GO points because I wasn't planning on playing on so I stopped there... Karen & Coralie seemed to divide their post differently, hence, the difference in when they 'claimed' the GO points.
And oops, didn't even compute your score! Thought it as a bit low! Then, it should be 2,170. Count the GO in your next round. Sorry, it was a bit confusing when you divide one round into 3-4 parts... I just updated my original post until I finish round and then do a new post for the new round (if that make sense).

I've completed Cycle Two, and have adjusted how I'm showing my score (message 69) so it's hopefully easier for you. Cycle Two score 1850. Continuing with Cycle Three, though I'm not sure I'll finish it before the end of November.
I just want to check before I start reading this. Do you agree that The Man Who Loved Books Too Much will meet the "non-Fiction/Non-Bio" criterion? It looks to me like it's not a bio, even though the title might make one think so.

What an interesting book! I'll have to get to it, one day :)
Unfortunately, though, the book page stated that it's Biography / Autobiography... we're kinda going by the top shelves so it doesn't actually fit the Non-Fiction > Non-Bio square as it's been shelved as bio.

Sure.
In your TBR, click "select multiple" at the end of your shelf lists on the left. Click the + sign to the right of the non-exclusive list with the most books in it. Read one of the first ten books listed on the list that pops up.
Note that this will only work if you put some books on shelves before you've read them. If you don't do that, let me know and I'll change the challenge. I just like playing with the multiple feature.

Did you notice that that only 68 people shelved it as biography, compared to larger numbers who shelved it as books-about-books and/or true-crime? If you see that and still hold to your ruling, I'll find something else. That's why I wanted to ask first. But I hoped maybe we could go with the majority opinion.

The only time I put books on shelves before I read them is to let myself know that they are not readily available, so I think I will need another challenge.

OK. This should work.
Order your TBR by "avg rating," in descending order (highest rated will be higher on the list). Read one of the first 10 books listed.

I noticed 151 for books-about-books and 82 for crime... note that these users might not necessarily exclusively shelved on one but not the other. So, they could've shelved for books-about-books and biography. Truthfully, I don't mind if you'd like to read it for the 'non-fiction/non-bio' and you're welcome to claim these points if, after the read, you feel that it is definitely not a 'bio' type of book. But what if, as you read it, you found that it fits more under the 'bio' shelf?
edited: I've had a look around and it seems to be treading both bio / non-bio pretty much equally (just checking on how libraries shelved them etc) so it could work...

Thanks for reconsidering. I'm really interested in it more for the mystery & books aspect. If it seems to me more like a bio while I'm reading it, I probably wouldn't even finish it.
So if you're ok leaving it that way, and letting me use my judgment, I'll probably try it.

Not a problem, Susan. Most reading challenges would rely on an honesty system anyway and it does look to be a very interesting sort of book! Let me know how you go :)
