"The Sea" John Banville - about two thirds through and resenting every SLOW page! It is truly awful! X

Started Bleak House. Read the first instalment of the original publication schedule, which I'd read before, but not sure how far I actually got into the book.

Fiona wrote: "You're in for a treat! I loved London Fields x"You are right, I already think its great, I was pretty sure I would since I loved Money, and when I saw this for sale at the local used book shop for $1.50 I snatched it up.
The Killer Inside Me by Jim Thompson - the original Dexter. It's o.k. so far. I've started it several times and it just didn't take.
Just started Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, which so far is even more surreal and bizarre than I imagined it would be.
Cracking the (heh, digital) cover of Under the Volcano. Not sure I'm in the mood for it, but it's due back soon at the library so I hope I'm wrong.

Started Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe today because the 100 pages or so of The Woman in White I have left will not get me through 2 hours worth of commuting.
I'm just over halfway through Around the World in Eighty Days. It's not as captivating as I was hoping it would be but I'm still interested to see how it pans out.
Naked Lunch by William Burroughs. The Wild Boys is the next 1001 book and I haven't been able to locate a copy of that easily but there are plenty of option for his other books. As I've never read any of his works and Junkie and Naked Lunch are more well known anyway (hence their much greater availability) I've just substituted. I'm only a little way in but I'm enjoying it so far.
I'm reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time and I bought Atonement at Goodwill this morning.
Karina wrote: "Just started A Clockwork Orange... I have seen about 10 minutes of the movie. I am apprehensive."I remember being apprehensive too about that one, but it turned out to be one of my favorite list books. The movie...eh, the book is so much better.
Reading In The Heart of the Country, so depressing and confusing. I enjoy Coetzees' writing but this book is very hard to follow. Any help out there to understand the sequencing better?
I started The Beggar Maid: Stories of Flo and Rose by Alice Munro yesterday. And I realized that I have started this book before but didn't finish it. Hopefully this time I will.
About a quarter of the way through Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind. So far I'm enjoying it, and now I know how to describe what a baby smells like. :)

Kirsten wrote: "Have you seen the film? I really enjoyed that."No, I will have to watch it after I finish the book.

No, I will have to watch it after I finish the book."
I've watched the movie and it was a bit confusing. But I have to read the book to have a better notion and a Perfect knowledge.

The Master by Colm Toibin. I didn't realized before I got the book in my hands that it was about Henri James. So maybe I should read Henry James next.
Nadine wrote: "The Master by Colm Toibin. I didn't realized before I got the book in my hands that it was about Henri James. I also have not read any Henry James, so maybe I should also read him first. I have no idea what types of books he has written.
Reading Le Petit Prince before bed. I love Saint-Exupéry's writings, but have never read this, his only list book.
The Heretic: A Novel of the Inquisition - none of my friends have read this one, but it sure piqued my interest.

"Well, I am just at the beginning, but I don't think you need to have read his books to enjoy "the master". However, the only book of his I had read was "What Maisie knew" and there is a little girl in The Master that is clearly an inspiration for "What Maisie knew", and that was interesting. The Master starts just two years before the publication of that book.
