The Not a Book Club Club discussion
Suggest a book for a group read

When reading becomes a chore, it's no longer pleasurable.
Eh. It still was, but less so, so I decided I was cutting back a little.
So anyways, do we have enough interest for me to add thief's magic to the shelf?
If so, when? It comes out in the US on 5/20. I think it's already out in some other places.
And who wants to be discussion leader?

Which gives you 5 days to read it before Skin Game :-P

I always read those in only a few days, and I usually do 1 audio book a week. So I could do it. It would be tight though.
I don't get why you didn't listen to ghost story though if you didn't have time to read it. It's not as good without Marsters, but it's far from terrible.

Hard to say. It starts as a private eye type of series and grows into something way better in my opinion, but you may feel the opposite. In most of the books he's investigating something though, so there is usually a mystery element at least.

It's easily been my favorite series for almost 10 years. Although Stormlight archive may be giving it a run for it's money.
I've only rated 31 books as 5 stars, and 3 of them are Dresden Files. There are a few others that are 4.5 too.
It's a bit daunting now with 15 books out though. But the early ones are all pretty short, and even the later ones don't approach epic fantasy lengths.

Oh snap, no one's nominated The Red Knight?? That book is one of the most intense, insane, crazy, violent, EPIC books I've ever experienced. It's almost on par with A Memory of Light in that almost the entire book is one long battle; in this case, a siege. Definitely not one to miss, guys, not in the least. Here's my review if anyone's interested. That book is BRUTAL.
Well no rush, it's a 5 book series and the 3rd's coming out next year. The second one was really slow, but it spent all that time laying the groundwork for the entire series, so the next book is going to blow some brains.
Anyone else want to read the first book after the Star Wars EU reboot, A New Dawn? Alex has expressed interest, if anyone else'll be reading it that can be a group read.
I'm reading the Thrawn trilogy ATM, and probably will be star warsed out after, so I'm going to pass.

Sweet! How you finding it so far?

I think that series in particular is one of the very few cases where the hype WON'T be overkill and you end up expecting more than the story actually delivers. I want to re-read them sometime, I need to replace my lost copy of The Last Command first, though. Enjoy!

I hate ARC deadlines. With a vengeance.

I tried that at first, even managed it for a while. But then I ended up requesting far too many over too short a time span. So now I have a big backlog I'm digging myself out from under. For the next two months . . . .

me, need to try more group reads.

Sounds like you have enough interest. Just need to decide on a start date and discussion leader.
Just remember that Cibola Burn is 6/17. Not sure if any of you will be reading that as well.
Once you decide, I'll add it to the shelf and make a new section.

Tower Lord releases July 1st.
Assail releases August 5th.
Are dates set for Half a Kingand The Shadow Throne yet?

Yeah. They are already on the calendar.
Yeah. They are already on the calendar.

How about the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher starting with Furies of Calderon.
Or The Goblin Emperor?
I just did a reread of Codex Alera, but I would probably jump in on the discussion. I rather enjoy that series albeit probably less than his Dresden books at this point.
Also, In the short term I'm pretty overbooked. This month we are doing 4 "group" reads (albeit 2 of them spur of the moment for books I was doing anyways), but we don't have anything on the schedule for August.
I don't anticipate having extra time for another group read until after The Fool's Assassin in August anyways.

Sumant, i really enjoyed the series so far and would highly recommend it but like Codex Alera I would probably not reread yet.

The Magician's Land (The Magicians #3), Aug 5 Release
The Slow Regard of Silent Things (Kingkiller 2.5) Oct 28 Release (only 176 pages though)
Ancillary Sword (Imperial Radch #2) Oct 7 Release

I'm really looking forward to The Slow Regard of Silent Things so that's a yes for me.
I haven't heard of Ancillary Sword so I would have to look into that.

That's book 2 after Ancillary Justice

Part of my resolution (if you can call it that) is not to put all this pressure on myself by signing up to do a billion group reads.
I'm tired of feeling like I have daily quotas of reading to do.
Right now I'm about halfway through my current book, which is actually farther ahead than I planned to be, mostly due to how much I'm enjoying it.
Best case scenario is I'll have a week to read that book, which means I'll have to average 75 pages a day. No thanks. Not saying I couldn't do it. Just that I don't want to.
