The Not a Book Club Club discussion
Suggest a book for a group read
I already have it. I can probably read it in January. I didn't have an exact plan as to when yet anyways.
Sounds like we have enough interest. Maybe since it's a collection we can just read it over the whole month where we have 1 thread for each story that people can jump in as they finish them.
Thoughts?

I'm just going to put it for Jan 1st-Feb 1st unless people have some kind of objections. I can post the threads earlier if people want though.
Personally, my December is packed between other group reads and a week home for Christmas with no idea how much (if any) reading time I'll have.
And I'm going to Vegas the weekend after new years, and will likely have no reading time during that trip apart from on the plane.
Plus S&L's January Pick and likely another Rainwild book, plus Malazan of course. I'll likely try to squeeze stories in here and there.
I count 21 stories. I may read Bombshells this month just because I'm going through Dresden withdrawal.
Anyone who hasn't read at least Ghost Story will want to skip that story from what I understand.

I don't know if you want to post a certain start date for the Skin Game read, since the official release date has not even been announced yet.

I'm aware. It says that in the comments. I'll fix it when the date is announced. Until then I'll just keep pushing it back each month.

Heh. I *may* consider a re-read in a few years, but books like 8-10 were a real slog for me to get through.
You all are of course welcome to organize such a thing. I'd probably poke my head in from time to time.

How about Lord of the rings or Mistborn ?.
Well I plan to do an audio re-read of LotR sometime next year, so I'd be up for that if I can work the timing out.
There isn't a rule that I have to be involved in EVERY group read though. I skipped Dune and whatever that book was that Kat, Hanne, and Damian read together..
So don't be discouraged from something if I'm not interested. See what other people think first. 14 books is a long commitment though.
A trilogy would be a lot easier.

And now Skin Game has an official release date of 5/27/14 so I updated the shelf accordingly.
All you slackers are now officially on 6 month notice to catch up! ^_^

Well my reading schedule is going to be this for a few months1.Group read of Malazan
2.Parallel read of ICE books.
- I am done with Return of crimson guard.
- Night of knives i am halfway through
- Stonewielder(Yet to read)
- Orb sceptre throne(Yet to read).
- Blood and bone(Yet to read).
3.Mistborn trilogy(Yet to read)
- Parallel read with Lord of rings(Yet to read).
So if we start group read of Lord of rings some time in February or march it is fine with me.
I was thinking folks may want to read/reread The Way of Kings in February in preparation for Words of Radiance in March, but since I won't be reading that, that's up to other folks.
I'm not sure when exactly I'll do LotR. I'm somewhat flexible pending reviews I have to do for SFFAudio.
I just signed up for some 4 book series, but I have no idea when those will show up, especially with the holidays. I may be trying to plow through those in February/March.

I think the group needs to read some science fiction in all these fantasy books, the group has been reading since it began. I don't really consider Dune to be science fiction, since it has more elements of fantasy.
I think people prefer reading fantasy because it has been more popular since the last twenty years, there has been more fantasy published than science fiction, and the ones that people do read are more of the space opera since they are more like fantasy, and mostly considered as soft science fiction rather than the hard science fiction of like the golden age of science fiction..
What about do a group read of The Black Company sometime in the summer, since most of you will be finished with Malazan by that time. But I know that will miss up the group's reading habit of mostly reading newly published books.
But as the old saying goes "variety is the spice of life."
You're welcome to try to organize reads that fit whatever criteria you seem to feel the club needs, but we just sort of read things as they come.
I say we should do a read of The Black Company right after Independence Day as I would like to hear those who have not read the series before, but have read Malazan do a comparison between the two series.
I have read the first 6 books in the Black Company series so if there was a group read I would jump in on book 7.Besides reading all of the Dune novels I have probably read less than 10 scifi novels. I prefer the settings in fantasy novels where it is more like the past.

Even if you don't read a lot of science fiction, you still need to read Ender's Game in the near future. I know you will enjoy it.

If you really liked Ayn Rand, you really should read Faith of the Fallen, which is a retelling of the The Fountainhead as Ayn Rand is one of Goodkind's favorite author .
Rob wrote: "I might be interested, but I won't commit until after May."Like I said, maybe sometime in July? How about July 7th for a starting date?
Also we could read the new Robin Hobb Fritz novel: The Fool's Assassin that is coming out in August 12th.

July is too far away for me to commit. Feel free to plan without me. Maybe I'll jump in if the timing works out.

But the things is the earliest for you able to read is in June since you would not be finished with Malazan until sometime in May, then directly jumping into Dresden.
Also I don't think you would enjoy it as much as Malazan, since some of the members here who have read it and Malazan all give it around 3 stars.
I'm not sure I want to jump into another series next year either. This Malazan read will be a year and a half.
I already own The Black Company in audio though. I just would plan without me. Or wait until next spring to gauge interest.

Thanks for the recommendations Kevin. Will check them out.

I would definitely be up for reading LotR again. Actually, I just reread the whole thing at the beginning of the month. But I'm always up for reading them again. :)
Now that I've got Alif the Unseen as a birthday present, I really've got to read it. It's been proposed several times in different groups but just doesn't make it as monthly read.

I enjoyed that one.
I enjoyed that one.
So what do people want to read next? The Way of Kings is currently topping the list with 22 votes (I doubt half of them will be participating if we do read it though).
It would make sense to read that soon since Words of Radiance will be out in March.
Thoughts? Other suggestions?

Storm light Archive we will be definitely a good series to start but only thing i have against it is, the series is not completed yet.Can you tell us @Rob which series has got highest second and third votes??.
1. The Way of Kings (17 votes)2. Words of Radiance (14 votes)
3. The Black Company (13 votes)
4. Blood Song (13 votes)
5. Tigana (13 votes)
I think i am in for black company.
Was this a poll or something? I would read any of the 5. The only ones I've read were The Way of Kings, I planned a reread anyway, and the first Black Company book, which I really liked and planned to continue the series this year.
I have everything available(black company to book 7). I would do a reread of way of kings but probably not until mid february. I may do a reread of blood song but again not until closer to the release of book 2 on 7/1. All the books listed were very good and worth the read.

I don't see Tigana or Words of Radiance on the list...

Two consecutive Sandersons is a quite large reading investment. I've already read Way of Kings and I don't know if I'd participate. I'd propose something lighter in terms of book weight - those that didn't read Way of Kings yet could go for it, then if they want to participate in March with Words of Radiance.
Don't know how much lighter this would be but the next series I plan on reading is Acts of Caine by Matthew Stover. Would rather fo it as a group read if anyone was interested. It starts with Heroes Die.
