I am going to be continuing Valdemar at some point but I really need to bump off some other stuff first.

Anyone planning on reading The Waking Fire? I was going to wait on it, but I got a review copy a few weeks back. I haven't had time to listen to it yet, but it looks like it comes out this week.

That usually means it will be a few weeks until it actually goes into circulation.
I might be interested in it. I will try to take a look.And...I'd say as far as the Elemental Assassins series thing folder - we can give it another week, but if nobody else says anything, I'd suggest just deleting it. Was worth a try!

Well you don't have to do the group reads. I don't want people to feel burned out. We could make it more informal or something..Or not at all.
Either way I'm starting it tomorrow since I need to review it for SFF and I've been sitting on it for like 2 weeks now.

I'm going to borrow this thread for a day, and ask you to recommend a book to me.I never poked a stick at short stories before, but for inexplicable reasons I ended up with not one, but five anthologies this month. I have a small bookshelf in my library that they can live on, but there's a bit of space left.
Do you know a collection or anthology you think I should definitely check out? I'm open for most genres for short stories, the only thing I don't like are romance and poems.
What's your 'must have read' or 'found this funny' or 'always wondered about' recommendation?

Check out Book of new sun if you are interested in reading something deep.
I'm bad at short stories. Anthologies especially. There are a few collections by favorite authors I liked, but those tend to be associated with series I like, so it adds more to the stories.
Best of luck. Sorry to be no help.

I strongly recommend any of the Infinity Project anthologies by editor Jonathan Strahan.I very much enjoyed Monstrous Affections: An Anthology of Beastly Tales edited by Kelly Link.
I also enjoyed Upgraded edited by Neil Clarke and Kaleidoscope: Diverse YA Science Fiction and Fantasy Stories edited by Alisa Krasnostein and Julia Rios. I thought Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances, Neil Gaiman's last collection was only ok, but I've never been a huge fan of his shorter stuff.
That's pretty much the only short fiction stuff in books I've read over the last couple of years other than Stories of Your Life and Others which I didn't like much.
Other than that stuff though I hear really good things about:
- Get in Trouble, which is Kelly Link's last collection and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
- At the Mouth of the River of Bees: Stories by Kij Johnson (collection)
- Jagannath by Karin Tidbeck (collection)
- Old Venus and Rogues, both by George R.R. Martin (anthologies)
Sorry there's not more in my reviews. I only started doing the long form reviews all the time last year.
I enjoyedThree Moments of an Explosion: Stories China Miéville
Polyphemus Michael Shea
Hair Side, Flesh Side Helen Marshall
Beautiful Sorrows Mercedes M. Yardley
The Ape's Wife and Other Stories Caitlín R. Kiernan
No anthologies just single author collections.
I don't read many - but I loved Machine of Death: A Collection of Stories About People Who Know How They Will Die because it caught my imagination.

I put myself on the waiting list about 6 weeks ago because I knew it would be a big wait. I didn't expect it so soon.
Is it just me or do sometimes you put a bunch of books on hold at the library and then nothing comes in at all for like a week, and then you get 10 books all at once! I hate when that happens! Everything looks so good that I can't decide what to read first. And inevitabley I have to return books I'm really excited to read and then I'm at the bottom of the wait pile again :(
Anyway all that to say that, yes, I would love to buddy read Waking Fire, but I have to get through at least two more books that have to be returned before that one. If you start now, I'll just jump in on the threads later.
I created a single discussion threadfor Waking Fire. I didnt post a ton, but what I did is in spolier tags indicating about where in the book I was when I posted.
And I think getting all your holds at once is a library conspiracy. It seems to happen to people a lot.

Sounds good! And now I don't feel like I'm going crazy about the library hold thing. You've also uncovered their loosely hidden trickery :/

Because I will finish Red Mars by then and we can start.
@Rob & @Bill When are you guys planning to up the threads for The Fires of Heaven.I have started with the book today.
I can put it on the bookshelf if you guys are going to start it. Hopefully Bill can make the threads again.
I'll probably start it in 2-3 weeks. I'm doing The Guns of Empire, now and I'll (hopefully) be jumping into The Obelisk Gate next week.
Once I finish that, Fires would be next.

OK. I'll add it to the shelf as a 3 week read, and move the section up towards the top again (if it's not already).
Thanks Bill!
Thanks Bill!
So this one is out of left field and very short notice, but I was looking for a book to fill my time before September reads and I settled on Bossypants. I'm not sure if any of you have read it/are interested in reading, or how much discussion there would be.
Maybe a single discussion thread, instead of several (assuming interest). Anyways, just figured I'd mention it. I'm probably starting it tomorrow or Monday.

Last time I was at the library I picked up The Last Days of New Paris by China Mieville. Seems to be a stand alone alternate history sff title. I have been interested in reading something by Mieville and this was just sitting there in the new releases. Only like 200 pages. Just putting it out there since i know stand alone novels in SFF can be so hard to find.
Mieville is on my list too, but I've been a bit reluctant based on mixed reviews I've read. Sounds interesting though.
I like Mieville when he isn't too long winded...I'd be down for 200 pages. It's in processing at my library - just put a request for it and looks like i am first in line.
Yeah someone suggested Perdido Street Station, but I wasn't looking for yet another series. And cool that you are first on the list Sky. :) I was pretty excited to be the first person to read the book from my library. That is such a rare thing.
I put holds in for both Bossypants and The Last Days of New Paris in audio and am next in line for both so will start them as they become available after I finish Guns of Empire. Both books are relatively short so willing to give them a shot. I loved 30 Rock so be cool to get more Tina Fey. We did a group read of Perdido and I remember enjoying his writting style but really hoping he would get on with the story.

yeah, PSS was my first Meilville - it was a great book but was in fact extremely detailed and long winded in certain sections where I thought i didn't need to be. I still have Kraken on my bookshelf I need to read and at some point need to finish the PSS series :)
I'll check on Last Days at my library. Consider me a maybe. When were you guys wanting to do that?
OK. I'll add it for 9/1. I'll try to jump in but may be late or early depending on the library.
You willing to be discussion leader Jaime?
