JoAnne (joannemwct) | 2511 comments Hi all - I look forward to this challenge again. I've done it twice already and while a little stressful finding the authors/titles and words that fit for the week it was great bonding with my team mates. I also enjoyed how we helped each other if one of us had trouble finding a book that fit. The goal of course is to get the bonus word in addition to the word of the week. Any preference to how we divy up letters each week? One team it was first come first serve unless someone had a problem finding their assigned letter and the second time we rotated who had the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th letter. I'm okay with however the majority votes.

I am a school year secretary in my town at an elementary school. It means I get all snow days and vacations/holidays off that the school is closed for and get most of the summer off.
I live in Connecticut which is in New England about 1 hour from New York City with my husband of 32 years (on Friday), our 22 year old son and our cat, Fluffy.

I review books for Romancing-the-Book.com and RomanceJunkies.com where I've been introduced to many authors I might not have read otherwise. I'm also a Fool's Gold Cheerleader for Susan Mallery - this is my second year - and I named a character, Annabelle Weiss, the librarian who had her own book, Summer Nights (Fool's Gold #8).

I love romances, romantic suspense, cozy mysteries, mysteries, chick lit and historicals - those set in Regency England and also in the West with cowboys. I like books that have billionaires in them too.

I do a a few challenges on Goodreads - probably too many but I can't resist.

I prefer not to be captain if someone else is willing to do it. I have a lot going on in my life - my son graduated college in May and is taking summer classes that he needs before starting his job in October. He's traveling the world with friends - literally, he arrives home tomorrow morning from a trip to Chicago and Wisconsin and leaves Tuesday morning for Easter Europe for 2 weeks. I'm also still settling my dad's estate - he died in December - plus doing all the stuff around the house that gets postponed for the most of the year.

I look forward to chatting with you and finding out about your lives too!

JoAnne

Nancy Hi team! This will be my second time participating in this challenge. I would rather not be team captain as I'm currently a captain in another challenge/group. Last time my team did first come, first serve w/ letters. I have to start going through my books!

BTW- my name is Nancy. I live in New York in the suburbs outside of NYC. I have two kids- a daughter who is 7 and a son who just turned 5. I am a former special ed. Teacher but resigned to be a stay-at-home mom for the past two years. Now that my son is starting Kindergarten in the fall I am looking to find a job in September.

I am looking forward to getting to know you guys and having fun during this challenge!

Jennifer H Hiya, Teamies!

My name is Jennifer. I live in Ohio. I'm a housewife of 22 years. I have an almost 19 year old son who will be starting college soon (so I suddenly have a lot of free time on my hands) and a 9 year old cat named, Wickette.

This is my second time playing and last time we did first come first pick (adjusting if needed). I can be captain if Jennifer J. doesn't want to be. I'll just have to learn how to post.

Looking forward to getting to know you all :)

P.S. Sometimes GoodReads doesn't like to send me email notifications but I'll do my best to check our team thread at least once a day. Feel free to PM me if you need to.

GO TORONTO!!!!

Where will your son be going to college? My son graduated from Washington University in St Louis with finance and accounting as his majors. He minored in Supply Chain Management.

message 11: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H He's going to a private art college in Ohio. He is majoring in graphic design and advertising art.

message 12: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H Do we want to change or add to our team name?

I was thinking about "The Toronto Loons". The loon is the official provincial bird of Toronto.

Or maybe "The Toronto Terrors"

I'm not very good at this name thing :)

message 13: by JoAnne (new)

JoAnne (joannemwct) | 2511 comments like the Toronto Loons or how about

Toronto's Tenacious Foursome
or substitute one of these words for tenacious Talented, Terrific, Thoughtful, Thrilling

JenniferJ | 381 comments Hello ladies! Nice to meet you all!

I kinda like the name Toronto Terrors!

Let me first intro myself. My name is Jennifer also and I work from home so I usually have a good bit of free time. I live in a small town in South Carolina. (Been here all my life and prob. will be the remainder! LOL

I have 2 doggies I love very much and a silly cat who gets on my nerves a good bit but guess she's a keeper as well.

Jennifer I would be thrilled for you to be captain hon. I don't mind helping out if you need me though. :)

Edited to add that I don't mind how we choose letters. I have done it both ways mentioned but if I absolutely needed to choose one way or another I would prefer to choose on first come basis and adjust if we needed to.

message 18: by JoAnne (new)

JoAnne (joannemwct) | 2511 comments Sounds like a plan

Jennifer - captain with Jennifer J as backup

The Toronto Terrors is our name with Jennifer J seconding Jennifer

I'm sure Jenne can give instructions on how to post.

Nice meeting you all!

message 19: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H Is everyone ready for tomorrow?

It looks like were all EDT. Does anyone know an approximate time Jenne will post the first two words?

message 20: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Jennifer I'll post around 7:30 -8:00 am central time give or take a little bit.

message 21: by JoAnne (new)

JoAnne (joannemwct) | 2511 comments are we picking letters first come first serve based on what we find?

I don't search for words ahead of time - too stressful.
As long as we help each other if we're left with a letter we might not be thrilled with we'll be ok.

When working I'm not always around first thing in the morning so you may not hear from me until later on Friday or early Saturday.

message 22: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H Yes, we are going to pick letters on a first come basis. Adjusting when we need to. I'll do my best to come up with at least a couple different letters that will work.

Joanne, no worries about checking in a bit later.

Good Luck! GO TERRORS!!!

Nancy Week 1: NEST
Letter: T
Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum
Book: T hose Who Save Us - by Jenna Blum
Rating: ★★★★★
Review: I have had this book on my shelf for quite some time now. I don't know why I put it off until now, but am so glad that I read this. This book switches points of view from mom Anna, during WWII in Germany and her daughter, Trudy, living in Minnesota, working as a college professor of German history in the present (well, late 1990's!) Trudy doesn't know much about her father or her mother's past. Her mother believes the past is the past and doesn't ever talk about her life back in Germany during the war. While doing interviews for a work project Trudy ends up discovering information that changes everything that she has known and believed. Most of the books that I've read about WWII focus on the Jewish perspective. This was an interesting perspective based on what the women in Germany experienced during the war.

WoW:(nest - pg. 49) "Max rearranges his nest of blankets to make room for Anna."
Bonus word: (newspaper - pg. 4): "After all, it is Anna who has scrubbed the floors, laundered the curtains, polished the windows with newspaper and vinegar...."
Total Points: 3

message 35: by JoAnne (new)

JoAnne (joannemwct) | 2511 comments Don't post too early or those having trouble finding a book that fits can use the same one.

Sounds like a good book. Haven't read this offer before.

message 36: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H Nicely Done, Nancy!

message 37: by Nancy (new)

Nancy @ Joanne- will keep posting time in mind. Finished my book much faster then I thought I would and didn't want to forget!

message 38: by JoAnne (new)

JoAnne (joannemwct) | 2511 comments I understand. I actually keep a blank draft in my emails and each week when I finish my book fill it out. Later in the week (assuming I've read it earlier than it's due) I copy and paste it on this site.
The following week I do it all over again.

message 39: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H Week 1: Nest & Newspaper
Letter: E

The Eleventh Victim (Hailey Dean #1) by Nancy Grace
The Eleventh Victim by Nancy Grace
Finished: 7/23
Rating: ♥♥

Nest: dig their secret nest (pg. 333)
Newspaper: old newspaper clippings (pg. 189)

This book was not at all what I expected it to be. I am sorry to say it barely rated a two star in my opinion. Too many sub plots that do not tie in with the main plot.

message 40: by JenniferJ (new)

JenniferJ | 381 comments Week 1: Nest & Newspaper
Letter: N

Necrophobia (Zombie Apocalypse #1) by Jack Hamlyn by Jack Hamlyn
Finished: 7/24
Rating: 3.5 Stars

Nest: ..looking down into a nest of swarming flesh-eating zombies.... (Location 4726)
Newspaper: She handed me a copy of the New York Post which is probably the singularly most entertaining newspaper in the world now... (Location 2242)

Review: This was an engaging story with action starting on page one that carried thru-out. I liked it enough to want to go ahead and pick up the next part but I could only post it with 3 and a half stars for now because although it was a fair read it really didn't bring much new to the zombie genre in my opinion.

message 41: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H Well Done, Jennifer!!

message 43: by JoAnne (last edited Jul 26, 2013 07:30AM) (new)

JoAnne (joannemwct) | 2511 comments Sorry it's so late. I finished at 2:30am (yes I'm a night owl) and my husband was still up and using the computer so I couldn't post.

Week 1 Challenge - S in NEST
Points S = 1 + WOW 1 and Bonus 1 = 3 points

Book: Speed Dating by Nancy Warren

Date Read: 7/24-7/26/13
Rating: 4 stars
Review: This was a cute read with Kendall getting out of her comfort zone and joining up with a NASCAR racer. Cute premise and though I'm not really a race car fan this was an enjoyable read. Nice, unexpected happily ever after but would have liked a few more chapters to see what would happen next.

WOW and Bonus word:
Nest: ...and the way her eyes lit up when she wasn't calculating the interest on the retirement nest egg she wouldn't be needing for three or four decades. (Nook page 107)

Newspaper: As he signed a copy of today's newspaper, he wondered idly how many dorm rooms had his picture tacked up on the wall and shrugged. (Nook page 20)
