Rating: 3 Stars
Flag: I took one last look at the flag on the green...(Page 93)
Mask: Her eyes scanned the room as she pulled the white elastic mask away from her mouth....(Page 301)
Review: Hooked was okay but just not really one for me. I'm not into sports especially golf and I feel that was the biggest majority of my problem with it and not so much the story in itself although I did admire Fred's bravery joining an all male sports team especially with all the hostility they gave her because she took a fellow team members spot.

Portrait in Sepia by Isabel A llende
Finished: 8/28
Rating: ★★
Review: This was the group read this month for an online book club I'm in. Let me say, if not for this challenge, I would have given up on this book from the beginning. This is an historical fiction novel that takes place mostly in Chile abut also in San Francisco, beginning in the early 1860's. The actual storyline is decent - at age five Aurora witnesses an event that haunts her for the rest of her life as she tries to find out her identity. The writing was just too slow and wordy for me.
WOTW: (flag) pg. 108: "...the first Chilean flag fluttered atop one of the peaks...."
BONUS: (mask) pg. 130: "I was waked by the shaking and grunts of an old woman whose fine, charcoal-painted eyebrows met over her nose, making her look as if she wore a mask.

The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore
Finished: 8/29
Rating: ♥♥♥♥
Flag: like a tattered battle flag (pg. 214)
Mask: wearing a scuba mask (pg. 34)
Christopher Moore writes another hilarious book. The small town of Pine Cove has more than its share of interesting characters - Theo Crowe, the pot-smoking constable; Molly Michon, the town's crazy who was the star of B movies; Mavis Sand - the owner of the Head of the Slug Saloon; Catfish Jefferson, a Blues singer; Valerie Riordan, the town shrink who heavily medicates a good portion of the town's population; and Gabe Fenton, an animal bioloist. Add a sea monster named Steve who terrorizes the community, causing an outbreak of horniness among the residents, and you have a rollicking adventure. If you haven't read anything by Mr. Moore I highly recommend that you do.

Points G = 3 + WOW 1 and Bonus 1 = 5 points
Book: Jenna's Cowboy (The Callahans of Texas - Book 1) by Sharon Gillenwater
Date Read: 8/29 - 8/30/13
Rating: 3 stars
Review: This was a Christian inspirational read and I wasn't expecting it to be. Nice romance with cowboys, lots of family and a returning vet. Small town pride with football and parades, where everyone knows everyone else and their business and church plays an important role. Heartwarming feel good story reminiscent to me of books by Denise Hunter.
WOW and Bonus word:
Flag: They stood at attention and saluted the flag in the formal military style while folks sang "The Star Spangled Banner." (Nook page 85)
Mask: "So you need to stay away from fires, avoid diesel trucks and buses - or wear a gas mask - and keep earplugs in your pocket..." (Nook page 205)

WOTW: Baby
Bonus: Hotel/Motel
Double Word Week
B: (8) JoAnne~Beneath the Badge by Donna Alward (Post 176)~WOTW + Bonus
A: (2) Jennifer PP~Affiction by Laurell K Hamilton (Post 181)~WOTW + Bonus
B: (8) Jennifer J~Off Limits by Sawyer Bennent (Post 182)~WOTW + Bonus
Y: (8) Nancy~Year of Pleasures Elizabeth Berg (Post 180)~WOTW + Bonus

You mean JenniferPP sweets. ;)

:)

Points B = 4 X 2 = 8 + WOW 1 and Bonus 1 = 10 points
Book: Beneath the Badge (First Responders - Book 4) by Donna Alward
Date Read:9/1 - 9/2
Rating: 4 stars
Review: Quick read at only 103 pages. Romance and love. Nice epilogue that tied up the loose ends and gave closure. Loved the characters of Matt and Lindsey and their chemistry when they let go of things from their past and saw how good they were together. Have to go back and read books 1, 2 and 3 in the series to get the background on other characters I met.
WOW and Bonus word:
Baby: After all, the first night they'd spent together, he'd slept like a baby. (Nook page 60)
Hotel/Motel: It sounded a little weak to her-after all, she was sure that people involved in the search could find a hotel in the area. (Nook page 79)

:)
May not get to choose books for letters until late on Friday. If worst comes to worse I will take whatever letter is left and make it work.

The Y ear of Pleasures - Elizabeth Berg
Read: 9/2/13
Rating:★★★★
Review: I've had this book on my shelf for so long. I'm just sorry it took me so long to read it. After the death of her husband Bette Nolan moves from Boston to a random, small town, Stewart, Illinois. Here she makes unexpected friendships with Benny, her 10 year old neighbor, Delores, her real estate agent, and Matthew a young man she meets in a coffee shop. Along with these new friendships and Bette finally reconnecting with her long-lost college friends, she begins to grieve her husband's death and create a new life for herself.
WOTW (baby): pg. 58 "...like the one I'd once had when I saw a naked baby doll shoven into the branches of a bush...."
Bonus (hotel): pg. 98 "Make it a place where women friends could come together and not be in a hotel.

Letter: A

Affliction by Laurell K Hamilton
Finished: 9/5
Rating: ♥♥♥♥♥
Baby: You're being an undisciplined baby (pg. 39)
Hotel: most of the luggage to our hotel (pg. 50)
Great plot, especially if you like zombies.
Appropriately placed intimate scenes, not just tossed in pell mell.
If you left LKH because her writing went down hill, I suggest Affliction to give her a second chance.

Letter B

Finished: 9/4
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Baby: We start in on the baby names again, and I...(Page 32)
Hotel: Finally, I pull into a hotel that is conveniently located near.....(Page 140)
Review: I loved Off Limits! Felt a strong connection to the characters especially Nix. I guess because he reminds me so much of myself. I just like keeping to myself and am shy in big crowds not that "he" is shy; he really has some issues he has to work thru.... and then I really admired Emily and her brother for following their own paths in life and not being bullied by their mother.

Let's see what tomorrow's words and letters bring.

Have a great weekend and happy reading ladies!

I will try to search books this week that are for wide + fan + lawyer/attorney and will do the same for home.
My problem is I don't see the word until after I get home from work and many will have already read their book. I know time is of the essence for Friday.

So, I can wait to see what everyone picks and then start Friday night. All the books I've chosen are fairly short.

I hope to look tonight (or at least start) since I'm not sure how long it will be to find both WOW that have both bonus words too since we don't know what will be chosen.
Great job Jennifer PP - you're quick!
