Jennifer H I managed to find a book that starts with "a", "m", and "p" that have both words. It will be a couple days before I can start a new book so I'll wait and see what Nancy picks.

message 102: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Thanks so much Jennifer for waiting. Sine I'm away I did a quick search on my kindle and I will take m if that's ok. Found one w/ both words and I can start reading it today!

message 103: by JoAnne (new)

JoAnne (joannemwct) | 2511 comments Just got access to my computer - have to share with hubby since our desktop dies last night :(

I will look for a and p books since c and m are claimed.
I will look as soon as I get back from errands. Have 40 people coming tomorrow and have to do my last grocery run and go to the dump to get rid of some excess stuff that's taking up room.

Nancy Week 4: camp
Bonus: pancake
Letter: M

Mai Tai One On (Tiki Goddess, #1) by Jill Marie Landis

M ai Tai One On - by Jill Marie Landis
Rating:★★★
Read: 8/13/13

Review: I've had this book on my kindle for quite some time now. It's the first book in The Tiki Goddess series. It's a cozy mystery where a bar owner gets involved in discovering who the murderer is. The book takes place in Hawaii which was slightly interesting, since you learn about the culture and hula dancing. However, it was not interesting enough for me to continue the series.

WOTW (camp-kindle location 1464): "They're hiking out to camp in the Kalalau Valley for a week."
Bonus (pancake-kindle location 5925): "Suzi polished off her pancakes in record time."

Nancy Had to post early again. I'm on vacation in Rhode Island and had the time and access to a computer! Hope everyone's enjoying their reading! Will try to get on the computer again on Friday early enough to choose a letter!

You're having great weather - hope you're having a good vacation. I live in CT and will be at Misquamicut with the family on Saturday - 17 of us!

Almost finished with my book - will post review tomorrow more than likely.

Work starts up for me tomorrow :( so I won't be able to search until late afternoon or early evening from now on.

JoAnne (joannemwct) | 2511 comments Week 4 Challenge - A in CAMP
Points A = 1 + WOW 1 and Bonus 1 = 3 points

Book: Cross My Heart (Landry #2) by Abigail Strom
Date Read: 8/13 - 8/14
Rating: 4 stars

Review
This is book 2 in a series and now I will go back and read book 1 before reading the rest. Quick read that hooked me from the beginning. Lots of romance and love along with sadness and tears. Claire went from a brat to a lovely young lady. Jenna and Michael seemed like they should have nothing in common but connected anyway and had chemistry to boot. Watching their friendship and love unfold was heartwarming. There was wonderful closure and an excerpt from book 3 whet my appetite for more!

WOW and Bonus word:
Camp: "The camp is only three weeks long. Why couldn't I have done this stupid visit in August?" (Nook page 6)

Pancake: He smiled. "With some kinds of cooking exact measurement doesn't matter. But with pancakes or waffles, it does." (Nook page 101)

Jennifer H Week 4: Camp & Pancake

Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld
Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld
Finished: 8/15
Rating: ♥♥

Camp: like a camp counselor (pg. 96)
Pancake: you still want torn pancakes (pg. 41)

Lee, the narrator and protagonist of Prep, is one of the most unlikable main characters that I've encountered. Her tedious self-consciousness gets old by the time she's a sophomore. The endless introspection and judgments of others seem to be way beyond what a teenager would actually think or be able to articulate. The author's adult perspective is too apparent in many of Lee's riffs on her classmates, teachers, parents, etc. I really do not recommend this book.

Camp: I just got back from a summer camp up in Oregon. (Page 78)
Pancake: Spearing a large section of pancake with her fork..... (Page 11)

Review: Read this in almost one sitting! Very nice teen makeover story that reminds me of the Ugly Duckling turns Teen Princess. Chelsea has to deal with moving and getting a hot new step mom all in one split second but turns out her new stepmom is way better than Chelsea imagined helping give her a new look and image to boot only she now has more attention than ever from guys and dirty looks of envy from the girls when all she really ever wanted was a BFF.

I won't be able to look for the words/books until sometime tomorrow night.

Hope everyone has been having a good week.

Jennifer H Week 5: Pork & Barn

Playing Dead by Julia Heaberlin
Playing Dead by Julia Heaberlin
Finished: 8/20
Rating: ♥♥♥

Pork: Pork chops with Campbell's cream of mushroom soup (pg. 93)
Barn: with the horses in the barn (pg. 48)

This was a decent read; it kept me interested, wondering what was going on and turning the pages. I thought it was fairly strong until it got closer to the ending and then for me, it got a little hectic and too over-the-top. None of the characters pulled me in emotionally and the main character was yet another stunningly gorgeous tough blonde who was packing and would do things that in reality wouldn't happen. But that said, it still was overall an interesting enough read to keep going and if I saw another book by the author I would pick it up and see what it was about. I do like that the author gave a conclusion and wrapped things up.

Nancy Week 5: Pork & Barn
Letter: K

The Kids Are All Right A Memoir by Diana Welch

The K ids Are All Right: A Memoir by Liz, Diana, Amanda, and Dan Welch
Finished: 8/22
Rating: ★★★

Review: I've had this book on my shelf for awhile now, so was glad to finally have a reason to read it. This is a memoir, told from the perspectives of 4 siblings who suffer the death of their dad and then several years later the death of their mom. They take turns telling their memories of different events. This family lived about 30 minutes away from and I'm very familiar with the town that they lived in so I can relate to that. Otherwise, this was just an "eh" book for me.

WOTW: (pork) pg. 99 "...I was searing pork chops and felt two arms wrap around my waist."
BONUS: (barn) pg. 24 "Annie, I'm out in the barn."

JoAnne (joannemwct) | 2511 comments TRIPLE WORD WEEK

Week 5 Challenge - O in PORK
Points O = 2 (x 3) + WOW 1 and Bonus 1 = 8 points

Book: Outlaw in Petticoats (Halsey Brother Series, #2) by Paty Jager
Date Read: 8/21 - 8/23
Rating: 4 stars

Review
This was a fast moving western romance that had a few subplots going on. Zeke and Maeve were a couple in Zeke's eyes but not Maeve's. No matter how many times he proved himself that he cared and wouldn't leave her Maeve always needed some other type of assurance. Lots of adventures, an unexpected twist on the happily ever after, and nice closure. There are additional Halsey Brothers books and I hope to read the others and reunite with those I've met in this book.

WOW and Bonus word:
Pork: They'd finished a meal of biscuits, made by Barton, and salt pork, which Gil had scrounged up. (Nook page 144)

Barn: Between the two buildings sat a small barn. (Nook page 14)
