I also seem to remember the narrator - the girl - wasn't at Tiananmen but heard about it on the radio.

Oops, I apologize. You stated that in the OP (I shouldn't read before coffee).
Do you remember if the book was originally written in Chinese and then translated? Was the author Chinese, Chinese-American, or another nationality/race?

This one is a stretch
Summer of Betrayal: A Novel

Do you remember any other parts in the book? Did the book focus on the girl and boy equally? Or, was the narrative more about the girl?

The narrative was definitely more following the girl. I distinctly remember the boy went away and the Tienanmen Square massacre happened. She heard about it and thought he had been killed but found him alive later.
I really think this was two books for some reason.

The Tiananmen protest was not the main focal point of the story, but rather the relationship between the girl and the student.

Alternatively you can search worldcat.org advanced search on Tiananmen Square, juvenile fiction book English, limited also by a year range.

I've been combing through Worldcat and the Library of Congress records but nothing is ringing a bell.

Debbie, do you think maybe it was a memoir. Or, was it definitely fiction?

Everything else seems to fit. There is a lengthy review by one of the readers on Goodreads.
Also, I skimmed the book on Openlibrary.

There is a scene where the girl is worried that the boy was hurt during the massacre. Thammasat University massacre occurred in October of 1976 in Thailand.
She later finds him hiding among the bushes.

A young woman who lives in the country befriends a guy who is a a student and political activist, who is renting a room from her family. He lends her books to read. They fall in love but I think her father doesn't approve. The student goes to participate in Tienanmen Square. She later finds him again but he's hiding out as farm hand. They sleep together.
I can't remember what precisely happens after that.
I read this in the mid-to-late 1990s.
