Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments I believe this was two books (one was the sequel to the other) that I read back to back so the story blurred into one. I can't remember terribly much about the story. All the characters are Chinese.

A young woman who lives in the country befriends a guy who is a a student and political activist, who is renting a room from her family. He lends her books to read. They fall in love but I think her father doesn't approve. The student goes to participate in Tienanmen Square. She later finds him again but he's hiding out as farm hand. They sleep together.

I can't remember what precisely happens after that.

I read this in the mid-to-late 1990s.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments maybe, Forbidden City Forbidden City by William Bell

If not, were the main characters Chinese, or were they expats?

Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments No, it's not that book. Both of the main characters were Chinese. As far as I can remember, all the characters were.

Last Kiss In Tiananmen Square by Lisa Zhang Wharton?

Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments That one looks to be too new. Amazon says it was published in 2011.

I also seem to remember the narrator - the girl - wasn't at Tiananmen but heard about it on the radio.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Both of the main characters were Chinese.

Oops, I apologize. You stated that in the OP (I shouldn't read before coffee).

Do you remember if the book was originally written in Chinese and then translated? Was the author Chinese, Chinese-American, or another nationality/race?

Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments Unfortunately, I don't.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Hmmm... this one has been tough. I can't seem to find any additional YA books. Here's a couple more guesses.

Gate of Rage http://books.google.com/books/about/G...

This one is a stretch
Summer of Betrayal: A Novel Summer of Betrayal A Novel by Hong Ying

Do you remember any other parts in the book? Did the book focus on the girl and boy equally? Or, was the narrative more about the girl?

Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments It wasn't either of those two books.

The narrative was definitely more following the girl. I distinctly remember the boy went away and the Tienanmen Square massacre happened. She heard about it and thought he had been killed but found him alive later.

I really think this was two books for some reason.

Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments Definitely not it. It's too recent, and the books I'm looking for follow the girl's story.

Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments No, those weren't it. The main character was definitely not raped, like in Waiting for Li Ming. And wasn't a translator like in Lili.

The Tiananmen protest was not the main focal point of the story, but rather the relationship between the girl and the student.

bookel | 4027 comments The China Coin by Allan Baillie? (I haven't read it so don't know if that's what you're after, but it's the only young adult fiction I know of on that topic off the top of my head.)
Alternatively you can search worldcat.org advanced search on Tiananmen Square, juvenile fiction book English, limited also by a year range.

The China Coin for Bookel's suggestion's clicker.

Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments No, that wasn't it.
I've been combing through Worldcat and the Library of Congress records but nothing is ringing a bell.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I'm glad you're still looking. Here's your 'bump' for this winter; hope to see you bump again this spring.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Hope we can find the book; it sounds really interesting.
Debbie, do you think maybe it was a memoir. Or, was it definitely fiction?

Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments Definitely fiction. It was in my old hometown library's YA fiction section.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Glad you're still bumping this, Debbie.
Do you remember the cover of the book(s)?

Debbie is on Storygraph (silentrequiem) | 89 comments I think it was tan but I'm not 100% positive about that.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Rice without Rain Rice without Rain by Minfong Ho by Minfong Ho seems to fit. The only exception is that this story takes place in Thailand.

Everything else seems to fit. There is a lengthy review by one of the readers on Goodreads.

Also, I skimmed the book on Openlibrary.
https://openlibrary.org/books/OL27389...

There is a scene where the girl is worried that the boy was hurt during the massacre. Thammasat University massacre occurred in October of 1976 in Thailand.

She later finds him hiding among the bushes.
