Leah (fictionfanaz) About halfway through The Never List and really enjoying it so far. Dark and well-written.

message 52: by Dustin (new)

Dustin Since I'm done with The Catcher in the Rye, I thought it would an excellent opportunity to make further progress in my re-read of A Clash of Kings (which is moving along smoothly, BTW,) but yesterday I started We Live in Water: Stories. It's Jess Walter's first short story collections. I've only read the first one, but I'm really digging it a lot. I HIGHLY recommend this author!!

message 53: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (crackedx_spine) Leah, that book sounds really good!

I'm currently finishing up the Jessica Darling series (coming of age YA type) and then hope to tackle this pile of books I've won through Goodreads.

Me too Adam! Just wish it were available in digital format.

message 55: by Rick (new)

Rick Shepard I'm part way through 'The Last Detective' by Ben Winters. I won a copy of the second in the series, so I need to finish this first. I also just won a copy of 'Sloughing Off the Rot', by Lance Carbuncle. That looks like a very bizarre book, pretty excited to start And I just ordered a copy of 'Screamscapes' by Evans Light. I haven't read anything by Evans or Adam, so I'm really excited to get that and get started!

message 56: by [deleted user] (new)

You won't be disappointed Rick. The Light Brothers are both excellent writers.

This sounds right up my alley, Leah! Thank you for sharing with the group.:)

I've yet to read Evans, and only one story of Adam's, but Vengeance By The Foot is quite good, I loved it! I should be reading Screamscapes sometime soon.

message 59: by Janie (new)

Janie Johnson Currently reading City of Bones.

message 60: by [deleted user] (new)

I am interested in how that one turns out for you Janie. Someone left a copy laying around at work and it's still there :)

message 61: by Lina (new)

Lina (booksnotlovers) Currently reading Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling aaand The Arabian Nights: Tales from a Thousand and One Nights. Trying to get through tree thick books this summer.

The first two are on my to-read list. I will eventually get to them.

I don't think The Casual Vacancy is worth it though... It's a bit fluttering (in my opinion).

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks for the heads up Lina.

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments I just started DESERT PLACES by Blake Crouch. It is a freebie on Amazon today. What luck! I've been wanting to read this one for quite some time.

I have a pdf of that. I haven't read it yet, though. I think I will snag the mobi file though. Thanks!

message 67: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm, I was just looking through my 86 free books on my Kindle and don't have this one. Not that I'll ever get the time to read it, but what the heck.

message 68: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments I discovered Crouch when I read PINES. That book floored me. After reading a couple of his others, I am a huge fan.

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, I might just have to MAKE the time to read it. I can do it, just need to manage my time a little better. I can do it!!

message 70: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments Relax, Cindy. This is the CASUAL readers group. :). I have about 800 books on my TBR list. I am sure I'll read some of them before I die, but I keep finding interesting books that I MUST read now.

message 71: by [deleted user] (new)

Ahh, I was just half joking around Adam. Of course, we will never be able to read all of them. But, it is fun trying.

message 72: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 79 comments Wow Adam ... 800 books on your TBR list? I don't feel as bad now :)
I was given Casual Vacancy as a gift and honestly couldn't finish it. I don't think I even made the half way point. I heard about it being a slow start but then really picked up and was a good read.
Thanks for the mention of Desert Places ... just picked it up.

I've read like 25 % of it, and I just want it to be over. But I pledge to read it, seeing as JK Rowling is JK Rowling and hopefully has a better ending than start.

message 74: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments You're welcome, Michelle. I'm already 12% into Desert Places and I only put it down so I could get back to my own writing. Just like all the other Crouch novels I have had the pleasure of reading, this one grabs you and doesn't let go.

message 75: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (dabink) | 20 comments Currently, reading a collection of H.P. Lovecraft stories. I won a copy of The Book Of Cthulhu II, a tribute collection, so I figured I should read the real thing first.....

Also, the relaunched Swamp Thing/Animal Man series. Also because I won some of them via Firstreads.

Series I'm in the middle of, cycling through as I can get to the library:
Neil Gaiman's Sandman, because I finally managed to find it and its awesome.
Scott Snyder's American Vampire, because Stephen King.
Mike Carey's The Unwritten, because I was curious and OH MY GOODNESS HOW INCREDIBLE IS THIS?!?
Bill Willingham's Fables, because I finally live close to a library that has it.

Jordan, I am a huge Sandman fan! I have The Absolute Sandman 1 & 2, and they are fantastic collections of these comics (though way too pricey).

Hey, you and me both, Adam! I think my TBR shelf is about half of yours, but the concept's the same. And it'll never be sated! We may not read every book that interests us, but we sure as heck can try, right? The journey's half the fun, I say!

message 78: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I'm rather interested in The Casual Vacancy, actually, I have been since I first heard about Rowling branching away from the Harry Potter books. I cannot wait!

message 79: by [deleted user] (new)

I also got a copy of The Casual Vacancy due to high curiosity. I'm planning of reading it within the next few months. If any of you have read it, I would love to hear your thoughts and comments on the book.

Happy reading! :)

The thing about the book, is that it is not exactly poorly written. But it is a bit fluttering, due to Rowlings choice of using very many peoples point of views. I can't keep track of everyone, and I can't connect with the characters. It's also sort of a difficult language, she uses a lot of big words, and, yes, it's branching out, but there isn't really a good flow throughout the book. That's how I feel anyway. But a) I've only read about 25 per cent of the book, and b) English is not my mother tongue.

message 81: by Brittany (new)

Brittany (crackedx_spine) I'm about to finish Diary of a Teenage Fairy Godmother: A Contemporary Teen Fantasy Romance and I'm debating what I want to read next... probably Jane Bites Back. Not sure.

message 82: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments I loved the Harry Potter series, but find I have 0 motivation to read Rowlings' new book. I have yet to hear a positive review from anyone I know that's read it. It seems that a lot of people simply give up on it.

All the reviews I've seen have been rather mixed, Antonello.. which for me is all the more incentive to give it a go!

message 86: by Adam (new)

Adam Light (goodreadscomadamlight) | 603 comments Reading Thicker Than Blood. This is the Andrew Thomas/Luther Kite series from Blake Crouch. Unputdownable.

message 87: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 79 comments Just got Changes by Jim Butcher tonight. I've loved the books from the Dresden Files series so far and I've been anxious to read more. This one was a steal at $2.00 in the clearance bin at B&N so I had to get it. I'll set the many others that I'm currently reading aside for a short time while I read this.

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

LOVE the clearance bins!!

message 89: by Addy (new)

Addy | 379 comments Hey all. Was wonderin if anyone has read a book about a girl who falls in love with a character from a book she's reading and then I think he comes to life. I can't remember who wrote it. Ring a bell to anyone?

message 90: by [deleted user] (new)

Is this the one you are thinking of? Between the Lines

message 91: by Erica (new)

Erica (bookpsycho) I'm currently reading The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman.

message 92: by Anthea (new)

Anthea | 19 comments I'm reading The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared (sort of a Swedish Forrest Gump) and also listening to Anthony Bourdain's Medium Raw while walking.

Just curious, is this fiction or non-fiction James. I'm in too big of a hurry today to look stuff up. And a bit lazy. Glad you are enjoying the book.

Yes, I was just a bit slow on the take when I first read the post. Have been pushing myself way too hard lately and to the point of exhaustion. Just took me a little longer than it should to figure out. Thanks James.
