August Challenge for Book Advantage Points
For those of you who don't know, the 7% challenge total of books (49 books per team) was calculated based on the percentage of books needed to be read weekly. We've done the same sort of calculation and have figured out that individually our "target" goals should be the following for this challenge:Emily - 40 book goal - need to read 2 books
Katie - 40 book goal - need to read 2 books
Diane - 72 book goal - need to read 5 books
Chris - 100 book goal - need to read 7 books
Catherine - 120 book goal - need to read 8 books
Melissa - 150 book goal - need to read 10 books
Rebecca - 150 book goal - need to read 10 books
Judy - 180 book goal - need to read 12 books
Vi - 213 book goal - need to read 14 books
Leslie - 285 book goal - need to read 20 books
We also recognize that real life will take over and you may not be able to meet those goals. If you think you can do more or less, please let us know. If necessary, please private message me.
At this time we are not reserving any posts yet - just trying to figure out what 10 categories we are doing.

8, 13, 14, 17, 16, 1, 10, 4I don't think I can "reserve" 5 books for a month as that is likely all I will read, and I'm a mood reader. I could maybe commit to 2 or 3.
Hi Diane, I totally understand. It's just a guide number. You can reserve how much you feel comfortable.
1. Back to School Shopping - Read any book with shoes on the cover. For verification, will need to post cover.2. Day at the Beach - Read any book that has a beach scene or beach related items on the cover (sand bucket, beach umbrella, etc.) For verification, will need to post cover.

16. They're My Favorite - Read a book by your favorite author.
17. New to Me - Read a book written by a new-to-you author.
ok...so I think
8, 17, 9, 2, 14, 10, 16, 5, 4, 1.
I might be able to do more than one books on some categories and none on another...
17, 16, 14, 13, 11, 9, 8, 7, 3, 1Man I have been neglecting this group because this just snuck past me. I'm halfway through with Anatomy though yay! Anyways Series, Genres, Fav. Author, & New Author would be easiest for me since I really am just trying to read books I already have, but yeah 2 will probably have to be my goal.
So....We pick the top 10 categories that we do, right? Or is it 10 categories we want to do...Please explain since I'm still kinda new at this. In anyway I pick....1

Mine in no particular order:2, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17
Why did we decide on 10? I want to vote for more. :(
Oh, I want to bribe you Rebecca. Not that I have any particular categories in mind, it just sounds fun. And I don't remember why we decided on 10, Vi!

I kind of wondered that myself! I had a hard time choosing 10! :)
The reason why we decided on 10 categories is if the spell-it out for Moonstone was selected, there would only be 9 books for that category. I like even numbers and since we decided to up the challenge a little and read 90 books, 90 divided by 9 was 10.
:)
ok...so...let me get this straight....are we each reading our own categories? I assume yes..I'd like some double chocolate chip please! lol :)
Catherine - we will only be doing 10 of the categories - some of the categories you voted for may not have made it to the "next round."The next steps for us is to take the top 10 and our goals to the mods and get everything approved.
Once they have formally approved our list and our goals, we can then start planning.
oh...ok...by your last post...I thought that we would only do 1 category between us all....I was confused :) so....we will be using 10 categories between all of us then....and we each have to read what ever number of books is totalled for us in post 2..is that how we are doing it? and whatever categories are picked...we can still choose from those...yes?
Sorry for the confusion.Yes, we will be using 10 categories between all of us and as a group will need to read 9 books per category. We are not asking for any 1 person to do the entire category and hope that we can all have a good variety between them all.
In order to keep our team on target, we are asking that people consider the "target" goals when reserving your spots.
I may not be making sense - it's been a long week so please do keep asking questions.
so....do we have our winners in categories yet? I'd like to have some idea...so I can pull out the books I will read. I know I can't read them yet....just want to be prepared! :)
Here are the top 10 that will be presented to the mods for approval as well as our anticipated goals.1. Back to School Shopping - Read any book with shoes on the cover. For verification, will need to post cover.
2. Day at the Beach - Read any book that has a beach scene or beach related items on the cover (sand bucket, beach umbrella, etc.) For verification, will need to post cover.
8. Series, Series, Series - Read a book in a series you have already started. It cannot be a first in the series (although there should be record on your read shelf that you read others in the series.)
9. Summer Vacation - Read a book set in another country than you own. For verification, you will need to provide what country you currently live in.
10. What I Did On My Summer Vacation - Read a book that you are reading for another challenge (other than the Tower Team challenge.) For verification, you must state the name of the challenge.
11. Recommendation Please - Read a book that was recommended to you. For verification, state who recommended the book.
13. Do You Know Your Team Members? - Read a book that another team member has rated 4 stars and above. This book can be read any time and does not need to be within the Tower Team challenge. For verification, state the team member, their read date and their rating.

16. They're My Favorite - Read a book by your favorite author.
17. New to Me - Read a book written by a new-to-you author.
I have a question about #13 ~ I'm assuming we have to read it now but whoever we pick it from ~ they didn't have to have read it during the Tower Team challenge. They could have read it two years ago and it would still count for us. Just making sure I'm reading it correctly.
~Melissa~ wrote: "I have a question about #13 ~ I'm assuming we have to read it now but whoever we pick it from ~ they didn't have to have read it during the Tower Team challenge. Catherine wrote: "ok...so...I have a couple planned for numbers 17 & 16 already :)"Our goal is for people to also read from the different options. 10 of us voted for #16 and 9 of us voted for #17. :)
Catherine wrote: "there are a couple others I can choose from...I was just letting you know that is what I have."That's perfect!
Does someone want to send me some recommendations. Should we post that here or come up with a different thread?
Should we pick someone to make recommendations to or should we just put our names in alphabetical order and make recommendation to the person below us - the last on the list recommends to the first on the list. Just a thought...I'll peek through my books and see what I can do for the ones with a certain cover needed. The rest of the list should be fine.
For recommendations - it doesn't necessarily need to be within the group. I have a book that my boss recommended to me which I plan on reading.
Ok - sounds good. I have a book from my sister that she recommended that I can read then. I would be happy to recommend to others if they want.

However, the captains have decided to bump this up a little and challenge the group to read 90 books for the month of August. While this may sound like a lot, as a group we read on average 30 books a week and during the read-a-thon in May we actually read 53 books. I am sure everyone is wondering how we came up with 90 and the best way I can tell you is we wanted to use the word Moonstone which has 9 letters. And 9 doesn't go into 75 so we really rounded up :)
We came up with a list of 17 ideas:
1. Back to School Shopping - Read any book with shoes on the cover. For verification, will need to post cover.
2. Day at the Beach - Read any book that has a beach scene or beach related items on the cover (sand bucket, beach umbrella, etc.) For verification, will need to post cover.
3. Butterfly catching - Read any book with a butterfly on the cover. For verification, will need to post cover.
4. Dog Days of Summer - Read any book with a dog on a cover. For verification, will need to post cover.
5. Summer Sun - Read any book with a sun on the cover or that is predominantly yellow.
6. The Guns of August - Read any book with a gun on the cover. For verification, will need to post cover.
7. Spell-It-Out - Spell out Moonstone using title or author's first or last name.
12. Birthday! - Read a book published in the month that you were born. For verification, state what month you were born.
13. Do You Know Your Team Members? - Read a book that another team member has rated 4 stars and above. This book can be read any time and does not need to be within the Tower Team challenge. For verification, state the team member, their read date and their rating.
14. Genres, Genres, Genres - Read books from different genre? (Ex: Romance, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Crime, Historical, Fantasy, Young Adult, Chick-Lit, Women's Fiction, Science Fiction)
15. The Long & Short of It - Half the books in this category (5 books) will need to be less than 300 pages & the other half (4 books) will need to be over 400 pages.
16. They're My Favorite - Read a book by your favorite author.
17. New to Me - Read a book written by a new-to-you author.
We would like you to help select the top 10 categories of which we will read 9 books each. For this challenge, we are going to do things slightly differently. We are going to ask you to "reserve" your slots for these categories so try to think of that when you are voting.
Feel free to ask questions - we do have time to plan this so if you have any ideas to add, please feel free to mention them.
