Paul Harmon (thesaint08d) | 639 comments I dont think I've ever felt a seething pure stomach clenching hate for a character More than Joffrey Baratheon From A song of Ice And Fire...even the Malfoys aren't even a close second or the Rennies from Stephen King's Under the Dome.

Is there a character out there in Fiction that you guys hate so much that it sticks with you outside the universe and just makes you grit your teeth?

So she's Like every other 14 year old girl...if she lived now she'd be a twi-tard and listen to Bieber and One Direction. :D

P.s. this is meant in jest for the overly sensitive...for everyone else ;)

Not for the whole series, but for more than half of Liveship Traders, I wanted to strangle Malta.

Kamil | 372 comments if anyone of you had the pleasure to read Bernard cronwell's "warlords" saga, then you should know why i hate, despice, loathe Lancelot.

Also Andy-messanger-and-other-functions from "the wolves of calla". can't you not hate a robot that, while executing orders, enjoys the suffering that it will being?

Agreed, but Robin Hobb is a lot like GRRM in that her characters evolve a LOT ;)

My favourite historical fiction. And Lancelot is one of my favourite characters I love to hate.

Trike | 11202 comments King Imre from Camber of Culdi. If you think Joffrey is bad, you should read the Deryni novels. Those are the superb novels that GRRM is blatantly ripping off... and those people are even better/worse than the GoT lot.

Yes I did list the Rennie's in my current top 3....vile humans

I'd stick the rest of your comment in spoiler tags. Not everyone is on the same page. :)

Catelyn was also responsible for her husband's betrayal by Littlefinger. I'm trying to think of one good decision that Catelyn Stark made. I know I should feel some sympathy for her, but I can't. Whereas Joffrey, how is it possible to hate that turd "beyond common sense"?

Common sense says he should be hated beyond the fires of your heart to burn.

message 25: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Clark | 35 comments Andrea in the TV show of the walking dead, in the book she's cool but in the show every little thing she does annoys me and she has a stupid habit of finding the worst person and sleeping with him. I wouldn't be surprised if in future seasons she hooks up with the leader of the cannibals and Neegan. also hate Lorrie for some reason.
Julia from the magician king, she acted like she was better than everyone and I felt like she was undeservedly a bitch to Quentin. sure she had fucked up stuff happen to her, but he didn't know about it and it wasn't his fault.
I also agree with hating Catlyn. I didn't like how she was such a bitch to Jon Snow, it's not his fault he's a bastard no one asked her to be a mother to him but she didn't have to treat him like dirt

Paul Harmon (thesaint08d) | 639 comments Darren wrote: "Rasnac wrote:" how is it possible to hate that turd "beyond common sense"?

Well for me it defies common sense to hate a fictional character with this much....enthusiasm.
They are not real just someones imagination so hating them seems unnecessary to me...a waste of energy. But because I do feel that way it defies common sense.

I don't like her storyline at all. She comes off as an entitled brat to me most of the time.

Beatrice in The Divine Comedy. She's the ideal love he's been striving towards. He's gone through Hell to get to her. And when they finally meet she gives him grief.

So many writers (like Charles Williams) present her as ideal. I just don't get it.

Ahh very nice answer...and so true regarding how she is always presented...kudos

message 34: by Keith (new)

Keith (keithatc) It's hard to top Joffrey. He's given not a single redeeming feature but has heaped upon him countless foul traits and deeds.

Catelyn is A Song of Ice and Fire's Betty Draper.

Obnoxious, to be sure, but not a patch on the undying flame of hatred I bear for his not-girlfriend.

I'll third Malta from the Liveship Traders, with the caveat that Hobb brilliantly redeems the character. Joffrey is a wretch, but the only character I've really despised in SoIaF is, happily, Catelyn Stark.

Who was the terrible Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor in HP, the marshmallow who oozed around condescendingly, psychologically abusing kids....googling it...Dolores Umbridge. Yeah, I'd give Joffrey a piggy-back ride to the circus for the chance to step on her insoles.

Of course any time an author can evoke this kind of visceral reaction, that's a testament to their skills.

message 36: by Bryek (new)

Bryek | 273 comments Almost every single character in ASoIaF, especially Sansa and Joffery. those two were so cliche I skipped their story lines every time they came up.

Main character from City of Bones.

Regal from robin hobb.

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments Aaron, Umbridge is another one. She was so awful. But I still loved reading about her.

I can commiserate on some of the Aes Sedai. With one massive exception of Verin. Verin was a little pile of awesome ass kicking brown ajah.

message 43: by Ayesha (last edited Jun 27, 2013 05:11PM) (new)

Ayesha (craniumrinse) I can't express the loathing I feel for Carlisle Cullen from the Twilight series. While all of the characters are horrible people (and this is coming from a grudging Twi-hard), I've always found Carlisle to be an arrogant, self-righteous monster. He claimed to appalled by the way vampires prey on humans, but continued to make more vampires!
I've never wanted to smack a fictional character as much as him.

Edit: Also, Romeo from Romeo and Juliet. In one night, he goes from suicidal over Rosaline to madly in love with Juliet. Had they lived longer than two weeks, he would have ditched her some new chickie.

message 44: by Hesper (new)

Hesper | 85 comments Victor Frankenstein. Not sure if loathing is right, but I want to smack him silly every time he opens his entitled little mouth. Especially in the 1831 edition, which is different enough from the first edition to make it considerably less fun.

well it was the 16th Century after all. Passions ran along a more surface level then...

Thank god I don't live in the 16th century, if committing suicide after knowing someone for 2 weeks was normal..

message 47: by Hesper (new)

Hesper | 85 comments Nothing about the 16th century says that was normal. It would have been likelier to get caught in a religious conflict, or get the exploration bug than commit suicide due to stupidity. Part of R&J's appeal, if you like that sort of thing, is that they're so ridiculously extreme.

message 48: by Darren (new)

Darren Teenagers commit suicide in this century for stupid shit, as well, despite all of our collected cynicism. Romeo was a kid, and so was Juliet.

message 49: by Kirsten (last edited Jun 29, 2013 08:02AM) (new)

Kirsten Bailey (klbailey) | 82 comments It's hard to decide who I hate more, Regal from the Farseer Trilogy or Joffrey from ASoIaF. But Prince Celimus from Myrren's Gift makes them both seem completely harmless, he is so disgusting.

I have to agree with those who mentioned Malta from the Liveship Traders series. I loathed her at the beginning, and by the end she was one of my favourite characters (which is why I love Robin Hobb!)
