Background noise while you read?

In the last year I now put on the ambience sounds of either rain or ocean waves while I read. It is calming and I can just lose myself in the story more for some reason. So my pattern has changed while reading and that is a good thing. :)

Never thought about reading with sound ambients! Too Cool!
I actually think reading with background noise whether it's classical, piano, or just pure ambiance makes it an even more pleasant experience. I've noticed for me, I read faster and am more engaged. Does anyone else have the same thing happen to them with this in the background?
I should put on a fireplace video on Netflix or youtube next time. ha
Usually some ambient music, if I'm reading. I get easily distracted though, so can't listen to anything with rhythm or singing (or metal) without losing concentration!

I can also listen to metal as long as it's stuff I've heard a million times before and not anything new or whatever. LoL that would definitely distract me!Let it be known that the legendary JOHN CARPENTER has a few solo albums of his surreal horror-themed songs. It's amazing, especially his latest "Lost Themes III: Alive After Death" album. It's perfect for reading horror :-)

I listen to instrumental music while reading. Most vocals just end up distracting me.

Now that it's getting warmer out, I've been enjoying some Brazilian jazz from the 50s/60s/70s near an open window, a comfy chair, and my current read. (I know, samba/bossa nova + horror? But it works - try it!)
I don't mind noise in the background when a book is engrossing, but if I'm just not into a book it does distract me. I don't out music or anything on, on purpose, but since I live in a house with others, there's not always a choice!
"Hey Alexa. Play white noise." Just don't get tricked into buying the 'high quality one' Who needs high quality white noise? What does that even mean? The static sounds better???

I have somehow mastered parenting and book reading at the same time. So my background noise is normally playing, singing, dancing, screaming and some occasional fighting.

Airplanes are also good! I envy your ability to be able to read with all that going on!

Ive gone thru a number of different environment sound from background music, like soundtracks, to the thrumming of spaceship drive engines to bird sounds and rivers flowing. All work to some degree depending on mood of course.My go to sound is wind during a Blizzard. For me, its the perfect sound for doing almost anything.

Had it since 1994. I do find though that aside of music some background stuff like wind and blizzrd sounds help to mask the ringing. At least for me.
I often listen to a playlist of movie soundtracks and ambient scores.
Ive recently discovered that Ive gotten somewhat addicted to watching certain live cams from different locals that i also use as ambient sound for reading and puttering around.This link is for the Jackson Hole Wyoming town center. The cam does pic up traffic and crowd sound. Its not obtrusive so it works for me.

Like Jeff, I like ambience videos mainly - I try to avoid chirping birds and most fire crackling - but rain, thunderstorms, windstorms, oceans, lakes, that sort of thing.
It really depends. Sometimes I'll pick music with lyrical themes or vibes based on what I'm reading. Other times I'll just have any old music going. And sometimes I just like it quiet.
I really love reading horror novels when it's storming out though.
When I was writing a suspenseful slasher scene, I put on the OST to Friday The 13th Part 2. I was on the edge of MY seat!

I didn't notice when the ringing in my ears started but it's been quite a while. Actually, right now I have a fan going but soon it will be the air conditioner and I can deal with those. Just nothing with words or a beat or anything I want to pay attention to.
i'm fine with some background noise while reading but not too much since it can be distracting. i usually preffer to read in silence since i feel more immersed in the story
I prefer zero background noise, if possible, but a thunderstorm or box fan is quite acceptable.
I have a thunderstorm video I listen to on YouTube. Sometimes light classical piano music on low volume. I'm usually in bed and have a fan on as well.
Quiet room. I can’t read with voices or music going on around me.
I'll sometimes listen to horror soundtracks but I hate when the music doesn't match the content of the book. The best audio books put a little sound effort into them. There is a setting on your phone to listen to two different apps at once, so I'll sometimes put my own small beat in the background of an audio book just to help pay attention.

I usually go to YouTube and search for "[theme] Ambience", ex. "Horror Ambience" and pick one that looks good :>

I wish that was the case for me. I have tinnitus in my left ear. Ive had it for about 20 years. But even though im used to it, its hard to not have a sound going while reading or inking so it can cancel the other noise.Even if its just a crackling fireplace. But i love wind sound and the ocean waves and new age.
