Evan Walker is Creepy, Right?

What I Read Today He is very creepy, but I do think Cassie will end up with him. I think Ben and Ringer made more sense to me (Or even Ben and Sammy!) and I still don't get the kissing part at the end. But I have nothing against CassieBen.

Totally agree with You, Im team Evan all the way, I hope he is still alive. Evan betrayed his kind to help Cassie, he was all about Cassie. I hope Cassie does not go for Ben. Ringer did seem a little off to me, so maybe.

Sara Dominguez A couple of people chalk up Evan's creepiness to him being an alien. Didn't he point out multiple times that he was basically a human? He wasn't trapped inside a host, he was Evan. Even if it took him awhile to awaken, I remember him saying for 4 years he pretended like nothing was different once he awoke inside Evan Walker. So by then shouldn't he know that changing a girls clothing while unconscious would be crossing a line? I mean he had a girlfriend (Lauren) I'm sure he knew how to treat a lady. Wouldn't he have known how humans act and think? He could have just as easily taken her pants off and treated the wound, then waited for her to wake up and do the rest herself. THAT would have been normal human behavior. (Unless of course, as she pointed out, he were a huge perv) That's the whole point in the book as to why humans can't win, the aliens have been watching them for years and know how they think. Anyways, I liked Evan but he did do some creepy things.

H :) He was very creepy. I also found it really annoying that he turned Cassie from a really cool character into a sappy little girl. Ugh.

And when he read her diary...and I also found it somewhat creepy that he let her wear his dead sister's clothes and sleep in her room and stuff...

I didn't even think about that. But it's true that he had some experience watching the way humans acted so he could blend in... but somehow he didn't pick up on any ways to avoid being a perv? Unlikely. You can't chalk the whole thing up to his alien-ness because it wasn't like he was new the earth on that day, he's been around the block a few times.

I think we all need to remember that "creepiness" is subjective and as other posters have said, quite a few of a the things that added to Evan's creepiness factor can be reasonably justified.

I have to disagree. I don't think Evan turned Cassie into a "sappy little girl". If this was the case, she really wouldn't have fought back so hard or questioned Evan so much. She still wanted to save Sammy, she still totally planned to leave by herself. A "sappy little girl" would have stayed in the cabin with Evan until kingdom come OR begged Evan to come with her to save her brother.

Yes, she deeply cares for Evan however, she has not lost herself.

All that being said, I'm totes Team Evan. He is kind, loving, selfless, and maybe overprotecitve (who doesn't have flaws). I wouldn't describe him as creepy but maybe awkward. There was definitely something a little off about him. Okay yeah, hes basically lived as a human, he's observed human but we can all agree he isn't EXACTLY human. This might account for his questionable behavior.

I'm convinced Evan and Cassie will end up together. And so will Ben and Ringer.

message 57: by H :) (last edited Nov 12, 2013 04:45AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

H :) True. I didn't LOVE Evan, but I didn't really dislike him either, especially at the end...he was REALLY creepy at the time, though.

I have to say I like Ben/Zombie more though, not necessarily for Cassie, but just as a character.

Moggy He's a creep. End of.

Mary Elizabeth Tiare wrote: "Am I the only one who thought that Even Walker was creepy as all get out? I mean, he really freaked me out. What with bathing her while she was unconscious (and changing her clothes--including her ..."

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. But, I was just happy to read something where that happens and the first thought the person has isn't "Where am I? How did I get here?" It was "What happen to my clothes?!"

Inês I actually loved Evan! :)
At first he was a bit intense it's true, but at the time he was still struggling with his feelings.
Bathing her was a bit creepy, but it was for her own good, lying in your own blood doesn't seem very pleasant...
Reading the diary...bad move buddy. But I believe that reading the diary was the thing that nade him fall in love with Cassie and not the whole first sight thing. The first time he saw Cassie I think he was intrigued and maybe curious, something made him not kill her, but I doubt it was instant love.

Cassie was never held against her will, she didn't leave because she didn't want to leave, and the same Said about the kisses, Evan never forced her into anything.

I liked Ben, but not for Cassie. He and Ringer are a good match.

SPOILER ALERT

That part in the end, when Cassie and Evan save the day, was amazing, my favorite part!
But did Evan die or not?! I hate cliffhangers! And I didn't like the Ben, Cassie moment at the end...

(By the way, some years ago I watched an anime, the only one I ever watched actually, called Death Note and Evan reminds of a character named Riuzaky, he wasn't creepy, just socialy awkward, he really is a lot like Evan.)

Chloe Jane I didn't trust Evan at the start due to obvious reasons, but as things played out I couldn't help but love his character.
He redeemed himself in my eyes.
Unfortunately he wasn't in the end of the book, but I hope he comes back in the next!
I was waiting for Ben and Cassie to meet and I'm happy how it played out, but I don't think they should end up together.
I think after meeting Evan it will be too late for anything serious to develop between Ben and Cassie.
At least, I hope so.
I want Evan to come back and Cassie to want to be with him!

Zaeem Asvat Evan and Cassie are perfect for each other. And so are Ben and Ringer. But is Evan alive? How would he have escaped? I hope he's alive

message 63: by Suzy (last edited Jan 01, 2014 10:17PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Suzy Evan had some moments where I kind of sort of cringed, like the whole showering her part, but I do think that was somewhat justified. I mean he didn't exactly have a whole lot of options there. I do prefer the term awkward over creepy because I loved Evan and thought he was a nice guy who was also brave enough to go against everything he'd been taught to believe. He knew he was risking his own life to save her brother because he told her clearly that if the Others found out they were trying to break into the Wonderland system they would all be dead. I found that admirable.

On the other hand I do love Ben/Zombie. I love him a lot. As a character, I like him more than Evan. However, I do NOT want him to be with Cassie and I'm actually second guessing how much I like him after he put the moves on her at the end. That really annoyed me and it was also a douchey thing to do. Like, hello, you just saw her with another guy and just because he's not there doesn't mean that she's available for you....I don't know. I like Ben with Ringer a lot better.

Natlovesgod i find Evan as a nice guy who took Cassie in,fed her, and took care of her, when he could of left her to die.Not to mention that he was willing to betray his own kind just for her, for her to just rub him off after she knew the truth. Also ringer is too weird for Ben, her character its self is creepy as it is.Plus Ben took care of Cassie's little brother, just because he is a nice guy in general. I love both Evan and Ben, and am able to over look Evan's creepiness and Ben's pre-blindness towards Cassie while they were still in school. I love both of them, i just cant chose one.

message 65: by Lovetoread47 (new) - added it

Lovetoread47 Yes, I did find him creepy. I mean he literally crept/stalked on Cassie. Yet, I found his tranformation to be endearing. Because of Cassie, he found love; something worth dying for. I hope in the next installment he comes back alive.

bipasha walker guy's a creep...the master that taught edward cullen the art of thou-shalt-be-ze-holiest-creep...sick.

Light I can see why some people feel his behaviour was a bit over the top at points but really I think that's a reflection of the humanity he was obtaining. Humans seek other human companionship and I think after having to suffer through the loss of not only every person you ever loved and cared about but also of nearly every other person period would be nearly unbearable. I can see how once you found another person that you could be close to and could care about that the loss previously experienced would accelerate feelings and cause overreactions to the potential of also loosing that person. The odds were against them ever finding another human being to trust and obtain companionship with, so if that person was lost the odds of finding another person are even worse. Personally, I think this fueled the overly protective behaviour that Evan displays in this book. He and Cassie lost everyone else they cared about and Evan knew what else was lurking out there ready to take her away from him at any moment.

I don't think the bathing thing was weird or creepy really. Once this type of cataclysmic event occurs, I think a lot to do with modesty would be out the window because everyone would have to act as nurses and doctors for the few humans that are left. It's not as if he touched her inappropriately while unconscious, he cleaned her and put new clothes on her. Not the worst thing in my opinion. As for the journal which seems to be a big point of contention, I had thought (although I do not have the book in front of me so I could very well be not remembering this correctly), but did he not read the journal prior to him shooting her? I thought he made mention of reading it at her campsite in the woods and getting to know her that way. If that is indeed correct, I think that's probably what spurred his feelings for her and in the end stopped him from killing her, which he had ample opportunities to do.

Just my two cents. I liked Ben as a character very much as well but do not want him and Cassie together, although I fail to see an ending to the series which allows Evan and her to stay together. I feel as though he will not survive to the end of the series, pushing her towards Ben in the end. I just find the odds of Ben being the one other person who survives and she runs into too coincidental for nothing to happen with it. But I hope that I am wrong, as I prefer Evan with Cassie.

Melissa Yeah at first I was like whoa there, he was so into her a little to much like a stalker and it was creepy!!! but at the end love is love but I kinda hope Cassie ends up with Ben but then what happens with Evan he's so in love with her.

Kaitlyn I love Evan. He's my favorite character. I think that he should end up with Cassie and Ben should end up with Ringer. I think that Ben doesn't even like Cassie because he clearly likes Ringer so much. I think sayin that Evan bathing Cassie is childish. Cassie was angry at first but then she "grew up" and was fine with it and as long as Cassie was fine, other people should be too. I don't think Evan is creepy at all and I really hope Cassie ends up with Evan in the next book.

Sofia Evan is not creepy, and even if he was, you have to admit that he comes from a different world so he may not even know if he is being creepy. I love him and think that he should be with Cassie. Ben is just an annoying reminder of a show off in my mind. He can have Ringer, but not Cassie.

Kaitlyn That answer was so perfect Sophia!!!!! I agree with you 100%!!!!

Kaitlyn It's not creepy. And the whole point of reading a fantasy book is to feel like you're in the story and you're living like that character so when you're reading, you almost put aside all of your knowledge and react like the main character does. So Cassie gets over it, everyone else gets over it. And the point that you brought in, Priscila, about kissing the character while they are unaware happens in a lot of books or movies and it's not creepy. It happened in Catching Fire an nobody went "Oh. That's so creepy. " because you put aside your knowledge and go with it like the main character.

Kaitlyn Priscila wrote: "Kit-Kat wrote: "It's not creepy. And the whole point of reading a fantasy book is to feel like you're in the story and you're living like that character so when you're reading, you almost put aside..."

Cassie getting over it brings in the fantasy part of the story and when you read fantasy, things don't make sense all the time, because they don't have to. And if the author put in the fact that Cassie is okay with it and she got over it, they would think that the readers would be able to get over it and move on.

Kind of Spoiler:
In Catching Fire, I think in both the movie and the book, Katniss kisses Gale while he is unconscious after he is whipped.
End of Spoiler

You follow the main character while reading because you are the main character almost. Authors put situations in and then have the character react because that's how they think the readers will react. I know that you pick sides in books and you have the issues to discuss but there are elements that you just have to leave alone because the author used fantasy and there is no way to tell what is right or wrong about those except for what people are saying.

SPOILERS:
I was pretty sure that Ben's little sister died so there is nothing to agree or disagree about that.
END

No I don't just agree with everyone. I agree about whether I think that their actions were creepy or not in this case.

I get a ton out of reading by following my ways about author's ideas and being the main character if you will and I can pick out a lot of tiny things that make people think and turn them into discussions just by following my ways so I'm not missing out if I can still think.

I agree that it's your job to analyze what's happening, but more often than not, people will agree with the author and the story line.

Kaitlyn fan·ta·sy

/ˈfantəsē/

noun

noun: fantasy

the faculty or activity of imagining things, especially things that are impossible or improbable.

It doesn't have to make sense! And to me, Allegiant made perfect sense, but whatever. Most of the book makes sense and then some parts don't have to.

SPOILER:
At least in the movie I'm positive that Katniss is sitting next to her kitchen table and Gale is on the table unconscious and she kissed him.
END

I'm not saying that I follow blindly. I over think most things so it's not fair to say that I'm not critical about them. You're right. It's MORE FUN to be critical of a book and get a discussion out of things but some times, not thinking so hard about the story and just reading the outer parts can give you more than just the inside after you over think it.

SPOILER
You can not prove that Ben left his sister. His sister was taken and then he ran. He did not LEAVE her.
END

I lnow how to analyze and critically think. I know how to talk about it and go beneath the surface. Trust me. I know perfectly well how to do those things. Perfectly well.

I also know how to relate to author's backgrounds. I know.

Kaitlyn That's not true at all. That's not true at all. Never mind.

SPOILER

BEN DIDN'T LEAVE HER THOUGH! She was taken and he ran. That in no way is leaving someone if they've already been taken.

END

As for Catching Fire, we were talking about how people do things to unconscious people all the time in movies and books and we don't find it creepy. And I brought up that scene.

I'm not ignoring anything.

It very well coul have been written differently, but it wasn't.

Kaitlyn You know? I'm done. You can think that you are and I'm and I'll think the opposite. I end when I'm basically told there's something mentally wrong wih me. :)

Kaitlyn Alright. Have a nice then. :)

message 78: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Craft Okay, if your alls biggest problem is that Evan changed her while she was unconscious, remember that SHE WAS SHOT AND LYING IN HER OWN BLOOD FOR A LONG TIME. She was probably disgusting. What did you expect him to do? Just let her hang out there in nasty clothes, risking her getting sick? Everything Evan did was purely out of concern for Cassie, and if you can't see that, you're a little blind. He was an Other. He didn't care if he was invading her space when he read her journal, I mean, he was plotting to kill her. He ended up falling for her. If he hadnt read the diary, he would've shot her dead.

Shanti He did some weird things. But he had been watching her for ages, stalker style, and realised that he loved her- and himself-for their humanity. He loved her- and he did everything he did- because he loved the fire and passion and pain that is being human. Cassie wanted to kill him several times, but slowly, she realized that he was human as well as a silencer. And she was pretty savvy about the whole thing. The first few times, he kissed her by his choice, but once she realized he was a Silencer, and processed the reprecussions of the this fact, then she kissed him because she thought he was still worth it. Then Zombie came, and he saw her, and they had only just met as post-Waves Cassie and Zombie, and he kissed her, and Ringer was in the picture, and there is a lot that better be resolved in the Infinite Sea. But I do quite like Evan.

Kaitlyn I agree with Danielle, BOOKLOVER, and Madeira. All of your points combined were the points that I was trying to make when I was talking to Priscila. I totally agree with you guys except for one thing. I don't think that Ringer should die BOOKLOVER. I think that she should end up with Ben and Cassie should end up with Evan. :)

Emily I totally disagree with you, and that is all that i am going to say...

Joann H (Sshh!!! I'm reading) EVAN IS TOTALLY CREEPY AND i LOVE IT!!! (I may have issues)

AbigailDenyse01 he might be a little creepy, you know reading her diary and stalking her and shooting her and being an alien and taking her cloths off and bathing her and all that but every one has their flaws. plus evan is explained to be hot and nice and charming so it makes up for the fact that he might be a wee bit creepy

Kaitlyn I agree with Abigail and Joann H. I don't think any of it was really creepy but I can see where you are coming from. He is still my favorite character all the way. :)

Maddie Tiare Abigail wrote: "plus evan is explained to be hot and nice and charming so it makes up for the fact that he might be a wee bit creepy "

Absolutely not.

Being hot absolutely does not make up for being creepy. That's part of my point. He's explained as hot, which leads people to accept that he's being creepy as okay. If he were described as older or uglier, less people would think what he was doing was okay. But the thing is that it wasn't okay all along.

By the way, my feelings about Evan's creepiness are intensified by the fact that I see a pattern of accepting unacceptable behavior by guys in YA books (there's a trend of extreme possessiveness that's not okay, and then there's this) not all of my frustration is a reflection on The 5th Wave alone, but this book happened to be the one that boiled me over the top, so it got the brunt of my anger.

Thank you to everyone who managed to respond with evidence from the story, and thank you to everyone who managed not to insult people for having a different opinion about a book and/or character. Being able to discuss and analyze books (and other things you enjoy) is part of being a fan. Just because someone is critical of a story or character doesn't mean they didn't enjoy it, it just means that they want to hold authors accountable for the implications of what they're writing (intended or unintended).

Matti When I was reading the book my first thought on Evan was that he was gonna go ape-shit crazy and rape Cassie or something. I just got an extremely possessive vibe about him. I was really not a fan. All of his little acts of poking his nose in places he clearly didn't belong, become far too much for me. The reading of Cassie's diary really stuck out to me as an extreme source of violation and on top of that he lets her lie to him about it and make a fool of herself. Evan is an exceptionally flat character in my opinion. I just felt that he was bland throughout the whole book and never really had much of a relationship with Cassie at all. That being said, I can appreciate self sacrifice as much as the next guy and thought his act of selflessness towards the end of the book was rather courageous, it just wasn't enough to redeem him entirely for me.

On the other hand, I thought Ben was an excellently deep character. In the beginning I didn't think much of him - he seemed to be the typical highschool idiot at the center of every John Hugh's film - but reading through his transformation was astounding. He was so broken and lost, and was almost entirely brought back to life as a new person. The new Ben was strong and determined. He was admirably optimistic and out-spoken. The way he took care of his friends, Sammy in particular, was heartwarming to watch and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.

I think Cassie and Ben compliment each other in a way that Evan can't. They're both beautifully determined to protect those they love and will hopefully continue to do so in subsequent books.

Where Evan is far too much drama for my taste, Ben is simple.

Joann H (Sshh!!! I'm reading) I just am so confused by people saying Evan seems like a future rapist. I really don't see where it's coming from. Creepy? yes. I 100% agree, but he's an alien so I'm like, well duh, of course he seems creepy and he did kind of stalk Cassie but I didn't think any of it was okay because he was hot, I just thought it was adorable how socially awkward he was and it was cute when Cassie called him out on "Lurking".

I love Evan Walker and all his sweet, shy, creepy, socially inept, bad ass with a rifle, risks his life for the girl he loves, self. He would never do such a thing as to rape Cassie and Let's be real, Cassie would totally shoot him if he Evan(see what I did) tried.

CASSIE AND EVAN FOREVER!!!!!

Kaitlyn Joann, I absolutely love your answer minus the part that he is creepy, because I don't think that he is but he is amazing. CASSIE AND EVAN FOREVER!!!!! He is my favorite character and I really hope he comes back for the next book.

AbigailDenyse01 @kit-kat if he doesn't come back... so help me lord...
@joann I love evan so much!! I do think he is alittle creepy( reading her diary and the minor stalking and all) sweet and all the other things that you said!

AbigailDenyse01 Sara wrote: "Ok, listen up. I was pretty sure Evan actually is a perv or something and I'm also pretty sure he's like, a rapist. Or a future rapist. And you are one of those girls who love Evan, I'm sorry I don..."

I COMPLETLY disagree with you. I hate ben, he is a player and didn't know she existed until she went to find sams

evan is creepy, there is no excuse for
that, so when people say he isn't creepy cause he is an alien it makes no sense, even where he is from I don't think that reading diaries and following people are considerd good. but he is sweet and loveable and just awesome. she didn't like him because he was hot she liked him because he is sweet and awesome.

Kaitlyn @abigail 100% amazing response. Amazing! I love it so much!

Oh, he's coming back. I refuse to even entertain the idea of the slightest possibility of that not being true.

Kaitlyn Exactly. He needs to. Otherwise, there might be some very angry people. Very angry. And I know I will be one of those people right along with my friend.

AbigailDenyse01 I hate ben.

just thought I would put that out there. I also think ringer is suspicious. but... I luuuuuuv evan(;

Whitney Couchoud ( THIS CONTAINS A LITTLE BIT OF SPOILERS) This reminds me about the Edward and Jacob team thing. Honestly, I wasn't into that book. But on the other hand i'm mad about this one. Sure yeah Evan could seem a little creepy, but all I see was a sweet heart. He's alien , fighting for the humans against his own race. He bathed her because she needed to be bathed, he changed her because she needed to be changed. He watched her because he cared for her safety. Wouldn't you do the same?? Im team Evan and i'm seriously pissed, with the snuggles with Ben/zombie thing at the end?? When you have a guy who is willing to die for you, and loves you beyond terms, and decide to snuggle with a high school jock that didn't know you existed. Jocks stay with jocks ( aka , ringer ) IF Evan died I don't know if i'd really enjoy the second one as much as I did the first. They better cast a really hot Evan for the movie!! But they didn't, he's not that good looking in my opinion he suppose to be absolutely gorgeous! but he's pretty ugly... But Ben is hot!! So in the book i'm routing for Evan but in the movie Im totally on team Ben!!

Kaitlyn Omg yes!!!! Whitney, that was a perfect response even though in the movie I still am going for Evan. I know he is not gorgeous but he still might be an amazing actor. But I love your answer!!!
