With a rec like that, I need to move it way up my TBR. Dosha's currently reading!

message 803: by Suzette (new)

Suzette Harrison I now, Carol. Dosha and I've been chatting on it! :)

message 805: by Carmaleeta (new)

Carmaleeta Newchurch I will be reading four books for the month of July: Three books by Bernice McFadden - 'The Book of Harlan', 'Sugar', and 'This Bitter Earth'. And I will be reading the Group Read - Brown Girl Brownstones by Paule Marshall. I have already reserved my beach space!

message 806: by Carmaleeta (new)

Carmaleeta Newchurch I finished reading 'The Manor, Three Centuries at a Slave Plantation on Long Island' by Mac Griswold. I do not recommend it because the title is misleading. It rarely mentioned anything about slaves and slavery; however, it had good historical information but nothing to do with slavery.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I am reading Bring on the Blessings and loving it. I intend to read book two: A Second Helping, I have finished Sugar and will be reading This Bitter Earth soon. I just might do the Group Read Brown Girl, Brownstones if I can put my hands on the book.

message 808: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 70 comments I have just started Jazz Moon which deals with the jazz scene in Harlem and Paris in the 1920's. This is the first novel of Joe Okonkwo.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments This book sounds good. I'm looking forward to your review.

Suzette Harrison Love Beverly Jenkins' Blessings series, Ms. Dosha!

message 812: by Carmaleeta (new)

Carmaleeta Newchurch I've just finished 'Harlan ' by Bernice McFadden. What an awesome, talented writer. It took me two days to read this book and I enjoyed every minute. I plan on reading all her books. So the next book I will be reading is 'Sugar' by Bernice McFadden.

Beverly Dosha (Bluestocking7) wrote: "This book sounds good. I'm looking forward to your review."

It is on my tbr list also!

message 814: by Beverly (new)

Beverly I am currently reading:

Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue. An engaging immigrant story - looking at opportunities, entitlement and happiness and expectation.

We Are Not Such Things: The Murder of a Young American, a South African Township, and the Search for Truth and Reconciliation by Justine van der Leun

This is an interesting especially because of the issues/events that happened in the US in the last weeks - makes you wonder how do you get at the truth and just what is reconciliation and can it be achieved.

Listening to The Lynching: The Epic Courtroom Battle That Brought Down the Klan by Laurence Leamer
Well-written compelling narrative nonfiction regard the brutal race based killing that took place in 1981 in Mobile AL.

The first book I have read by McFadden was Harlan. Outstanding. So I got Sugar. Oh my goodness! I'm going to be starting This Bitter Earth when I finish with the library book I'm currently reading and loving-Bring on the Blessings by Beverly Jenkins. another favorite author. It is much lighter than Sugar, easy to read and rather silly in spots, which is good after all the drama in Sugar.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments Suzette wrote: "Love Beverly Jenkins' Blessings series, Ms. Dosha!"

I'm looking forward to enjoying this series too. Glad to know you liked it.

So many books, so little time! I found a brand new hardback copy of "This Bitter Earth" for $.25 at a thrift store. I need to re-read Sugar before I start that one.

Maya B | 825 comments Brina if you get Book of Harlan, we have a book discussion that is ongoing. Feel free to join in at any time

message 827: by Brina (new)

Carmaleeta Newchurch Well, such finished 'Sugar' and moving on to 'This Bitter Earth' both by my now favorite author Bernice McFadden. I think after I finish 'This Bitter Earth' maybe I'll be able to get some sleep at night because I haven't been able to put McFadden's books down!

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments if I didn't have a library book to finish I would be reading Sugar #2 also was t that book off the chain?

Just started reading it. I had to put it down to give my eyes a rest! Sugar was unbelievable. What a read!

message 834: by Brina (new)

Brina The library had Sugar but I need to read Homegoing. Amazing that it was available- I was 45 on the list at home. Will be reading Harla. Next. Thanks for all of these suggestions.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments So far we are having a great summer for reading.

message 836: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 37 comments Now you can all understand why I love Bernice McFadden. When I see that she has a new book coming out I'm as excited as a parent waiting for a new birth. My extensive search for authors of color lead me to McFadden long ago. The exquisite writing style, and rich flavor, especially in The Book of Harlan, makes me wonder why she is not better known. People have had to get book stores and libraries to order her books. That's unbelievable. We must do our part to help others, especially young readers to discover QUALITY WRITING. I bet the book stores are filled with street lit, or other books that have one plot, sex, violence, corruption in the church, etc. I had to change the type of books Amazon suggested that I read. People of color are not one-sided readers. We must promote our great authors, and not allow others tell us what they want us to read.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments agreed Kathleen, however I usually read books that are highly favored or hated by other readers. I don't pay attention to non reader recommendations. I completely agree that I should have known about McFadden but didn't. I am spreading her name around now though. I still love Beverly Jenkins for her Black historical romance/fiction and her contemporary Blessings series.

message 838: by Brina (new)

Brina Homegoing as good as advertised so far and that's just the first chapter. It's hard to believe that Ms Gyasi is a first time novelist. Maybe we'll read this in the group so I won't say anything else.

message 839: by Maya (new)

Maya B | 825 comments Brina, that would be a great group read. good idea! I'm #18 on the list at my library. I can't wait to read it. I keep hearing a lot of great things

message 840: by Brina (new)

Brina I got lucky my parents library had it. It is wonderful. If I wasn't going to a ballgame today is probably finish it.

message 841: by Maya (new)

Maya B | 825 comments Enjoy the ball game! Can't wait to read your review on the book

message 842: by Brina (new)

Brina Thank you. It's going to be 95 out there but it's "always cooler by the lake". Not today though I'm sure. You can't say no to a 10 year old or id be going to the beach with my book.

message 843: by Suzette (last edited Jul 20, 2016 12:03PM) (new)

Suzette Harrison Hi Everyone, I just finished Terry McMillan's latest, "I Almost Forgot About You." I admit: I haven't been a Ms. McMillan fan in a very long time, not since "Waiting to Exhale" But I LOVED this book! Definitely a good summer read.

message 844: by Suzette (new)

Suzette Harrison Dosha, I'm so glad you enjoyed my ALL-time favorite novel, SUGAR! You gonna make me go dig it out the garage and read it again :)

message 845: by Brina (new)

Brina Here's a book to put on this group's list for the future. Freeman by Leonard Pitts, Jr. My mom has it checked out from the library and blurb looks interesting. Reconstruction period historical fiction. Author used to be a columnist for the Chicago Tribune.

message 846: by Suzette (new)

Suzette Harrison Thanks, Brina, heard of Freeman. Will check it out

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I'll be looking into it too. Sugar is going on !y favorites list. Has anyone read Kindred by Octavia Biter? Another outstanding read. Time travel from the 70's Cali to the antebellum south for a black woman!an. Blew me away. It is the only Butler I can take, since she's mostly Sci Fi

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I hate this tablet sometimes. Octavia BUTLER

message 849: by Suzette (new)

Suzette Harrison Yes, Dosha, Kindred scared the heck out of me. If time travel were possible I sure enough DON'T want to visit slavery

message 850: by Brina (new)

Brina I read kindred years ago. Isn't it about two women being linked to each other? I also thought it weird.
