Carol (carolfromnc) | 4597 comments I am halfway through The Warmest December. I need it to start getting a little less relentlessly dark, but I don't expect it to. Mcfadden's such a great writer. For once I wish she was not, so I'd feel her characters' pain less...

It comes out June 7, but I'm hoping mine arrives in May.

I am SOOOO excited!

Lark Benobi (larkbenobi) I'm reading Megda by Emma Dunham Kelly. I found it at a used bookstore for $1. By buying the book I learned of a wonderful series, The Schomburg Library of Nineteenth-Century Black Women Writers.

The books when new are expensive but much of the collection is available online from the NYPL to read digitally:

http://digital.nypl.org/schomburg/wri...

Also here is a link to the catalog of books in the collection, some of which are easily available used online if you (like me) prefer physical copies of books you read:

I got it on Library Thing where I requested quite a few books. It hasn't arrived yet. At first I won boring books, but now I'm getting a bit of fiction. Lots of people win, but you would want to import your review there, I would think.

Most of my life I haven't won things.

Is this a new book by him? I read his Perfect Peace by Daniel Black and absolutely loved it.

message 725: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) | 4597 comments I'm reading two books, and feeling guilty about a third. I'm reading; Khan Al-Khalili and A Dedicated Man. I'm struggling to finish The Warmest December, but my tolerance for reading about child abuse and domestic abuse is not great, particularly late in the evening when I typically read. If only Bernice L. McFadden weren't such a gifted author, . . . I soon may just be honest and put it aside, and start Jam on the Vine.

It arrived today! Now I have to wait, though, until I finish a few other books since my job for winning books is to write reviews or be part of discussions; if you don't, you can't win more.

I'm currently reading Angela's Ashes. It's taking me a while to get into it because I've been having a hard to focusing on any book. Hopefully I get out of my slump.

As a general rule, I do not like short stories. That being said, when I get into my slumps and cannot concentrate or focus on a book, short stories are the answer. I hope your slump ends soon.

Guy (egajd) | 1418 comments Hello Kisha. I am likewise in a slump. Actually more like an allergic reaction to reading, as my eyes start to jitter and they won't follow the lines. I have been able to read a few books only.

I enjoyed Angela's Ashes . Maybe do some writing instead if reading right now?

message 732: by Beverly (new)

Beverly I am currently reading The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu: And Their Race to Save the World’s Most Precious Manuscripts
Enjoying how the book also gives the history of Timbuktu as well as the current situation.

Also The Rope: A Novel by Kanan Makiya.
A nameless narrator telling the complex situation which is Iraq as he tries to find out the truth of what happened to his father who disappeared during Saddam Hussein's reign.

Listening to Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff
This is a surprise read for me - it was not on my radar but I am so enjoying.
A chimerical blend of magic, power, hope, and freedom that stretches across time, touching diverse members of one black family, Lovecraft Country is a devastating kaleidoscopic portrait of racism—the terrifying specter that continues to haunt us today.

I suggest, for fiction, Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald and The Brothers K by David James Duncan. For non-fiction I suggest Year 501: The Conquest Continues by Noam Chomsky and Debt: The First 5000 Years by David Graeber.

This is one you'll want to keep. I am so happy to have my books on Kindle, otherwise, I'd have to have a house just for books.

It was very well written. I think I have 2 more books left to read by Mcafadden. She is one of those authors that I want to read all of her work

message 745: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 37 comments I finally finished the book, ;-( I'm sad because I did not want to finish. This by far is the most meaningful and complete book that I've read in a long time. I have read ALL of McFadden's books. They are all great, but this surpasses all expectations. She is appearing at a book signing on May 19 at 7 PM at Weeksville Heritage Center 158 Buffalo Ave, Brooklyn NY. I wish I could be there, but I'm in VA. It will be a dual signing with Cole Lavalais who wrote Cicadas. All those close by should make a "B-line" to this. Seldom do you finish a book and feel the ending as I did with this book. It was not a let down as some books leave you with, or feelings of being rushed to be completed. McFadden's writing is thought provoking with each word. You may not know it, but I LOVED IT!

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 4376 comments I am having a ball with this book. Chapter 10 was just adorable. 1 action packed page. This is the first book I have read by this author, I hope to read more by her.

When I saw her name, I didn't care about the theme, I knew I'd love it. Every one of her book have been amazing, but this one is tops! .........but then you know how I feel ;-)
