Londa Coffee will make you black is one of the first books that I've read in middle school (when I probably shouldn't have been reading it). I loved that book. Are you enjoying it as well?

message 569: by Beverly (new)

Beverly I am currently listening to Grant Park by Leonard Pitts Jr..
I have enjoyed his books but even though I am only at the beginning if this book follows through with the exciting beginning it will be in my top ten reads for 2015. I am looking to rearrange some things this weekend so I can listen more. :)

Also listening to The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. This is the first book in a new series and I think this is her best series yet. Great worldbuilding and I am catching glimpses of Octavia Butler in this storyline.

Jealous... I can't wait to read this.

I'm reading Almanac of the Dead by Leslie Marmon Silko which is amazing. I just started on the 'Africa' section which has an African American character who is a Vietnam veteran who is critically/appreciatively recalling and furthering his AA studies in college. He has connected with African religious beliefs too. This book is like Ceremony in that it deals with European exploitation of the 'Americas' but it's much more wide-ranging, obviously extending to the theft of people from Africa. What I'm enjoying in this section is how Silko describes that African people found that their gods had come to the Americas with them, but had changed, generally becoming angry and more pugilistic because of the treatment of their people

Interesting reading!
Will be interested in your final thoughts on Madame Bovary - it was not quite what I expected though the concept appeals to me.

Zanna (zannastar) I finished Annie John after reading The Man Who Loved Children and now I'm reading The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. Interesting to read about New York circa 1870 in the sleek modern prose of the 1920s? Wharton is very good. But it seems odd that everyone is white...

I am currently reading The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards though I had to take a break because my cousin thought it would be funny to tell me specific details of this book that I hadn't yet read. Really pissed me off. So I had to take a break from it. Now I think I'm gonna pick it back up today.

The secondary plot involving a boy who witnessed that tragedy and his life afterward is as compelling a tale as hers. The stories of the two children into young adulthood are intriguing and skillfully woven. This heartbreaking novel received the Bellwether Prize for best fiction manuscript addressing issues of social justice. A searing read.

I read only nonfiction for several years. This is the book that made me fall for fiction again. Such an adorable read and I've been waiting for the author to write something else. Favorite quote, “The ghetto looks different in different places but if you live there it makes you feel the same.”

Beverly I am reading Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis.

The author is a Black Canadian writer.

I am about 25% into the book and really enjoying..

When Hermes and Apollo make a bet about human happiness, they grant 15 dogs staying at a veterinary clinic the power of human consciousness. The dogs instantly become divided between those who prefer their old dog ways and those who want to take advantage of their newfound increased intelligence. What unfolds is a powerful story about what it means to have consciousness, and the good and the bad that comes with it.

Fifteen Dogs won the 2015 Scotiabank Giller Prize.

Monica | 17 comments You know I've never read Uncle Tom's Cabin. I can get emotional with books and sometimes I have to put them down or quit reading them. I have trouble reading books about Concentration Camps too. I have always been afraid that the book would be too much for me. Maybe I need to just sit down and read it. I don't know.
