Ashley - Here is her comment:

ARCs should be printed in June. My publisher is being stingy with them this year, but if you’re a reviewer, feel free to place a request via childrens.publicity@macmillanusa.com. And I’ll definitely be hosting some giveaways in the coming months, so watch this space!

Ashley (ashleyb21) Awesome! I'm gonna email it! I would love to get an early copy. Thanks!

No problem! Hope you get one!

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Ashley, thanks for posting the links, it's only a little more than half of the year, wow :)

Ashley (ashleyb21) Do you guys follow her on facebook or anything? She just posted a few minutes ago the release date is 2/4/14, The first Chapter will be released early next week (so in a few days), the Cover art will be coming out in a few weeks and She will be doing some ACR giveaways in early July.

Why can't February be next month?

Alycia (bookhound18) I agree, Ashley! I can't wait for the rest of hers to come out! :)

Ashley (ashleyb21) I figured out where "Cress" came from: Cress is a type of lettuce/cabbage, and the original fairytale involved Rapunzel's parents stealing cabbages from the witch's garden - which then led to them promising her their first born child.

Michael Ashley wrote: "I figured out where "Cress" came from: Cress is a type of lettuce/cabbage, and the original fairytale involved Rapunzel's parents stealing cabbages from the witch's garden - which then led to them ..."

Thanks! Great research. Do you know where a good book containing some/all of these original fairy tales is? The quotes she put at the beginning of each section in Cinder seemed very archaic and made me think she was going back to the original stories. It would be nice to be able to read them untarnished by marketing glamor...

Ashley (ashleyb21) Grimms, most likely. You can get a free copy from Amazon ereaders. If you don't have a kindle you can download kindle cloud to your computer and get tons of free classic books. If you need help finding them, let me know.

Also! Cress chapter one came out today!

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Ashley, thanks you for the link. I've just downloaded the copy :)

The most popular version of Cindirella was written by Charles Perrault, but there is also one by Grimms brothers, the same with The Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel is in Grimms fairytales as well, so basically all three are available in their book.

Thanks Ashley!

Michael Great, thanks! I found them on Project Gutenberg as well. Lovably creepy, this one has Cinderella growing a wishing tree with her tears and pecking her sisters' eyes out with birds on her shoulders. Eww! How's that for a bedtime story!

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments So, I've just read this first chapter of Cress and it was a huge mistake, as now I want to read more and waiting is even more difficult to bare LOL. I really like this teaser chapter.

Oh no! I was too busy today to read it, but just pulled it up to read now. Maybe I should wait!

Susan Elizabeth (susan_e_lizabeth) I'm a little behind because I was reading a couple other things, but I'm about halfway through now. I see the predictability was touched upon already!

I find the Lunar princess' story interesting because it mirrors many of the lesser known of Grimm's fairy tales - where a powerful woman tries to abolish her step-daughter or niece so they can't take power. I know we've seen this in Snow White, but it was also big in almost every Grimm and I like that it's incorporated into Cinder.

I saw Cinder in B@N last year and just the cover alone made me want to read it immediately. I hadn't heard of Cress, but now I definitely plan on reading!

Susan - Scarlet Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles, #2) by Marissa Meyer is the second book in the series. Cress will be the third, but doesn't come out until next year (Feb 4th). If you enjoy Cinder, you should definitely read Scarlet. Also there are two short stories that go along with the series: Glitches and The Queen's Army.

It's not a series that is too difficult to figure out and it doesn't make you think too much, but they are fun reads and I think a very welcome break to some of the heavier reads. I'm really enjoying the series.

Susan Elizabeth (susan_e_lizabeth) Thanks Kristie! I'll definitely check them out.

Savanes | 2107 comments I just started (and already half way through). :) Not reading the spoilers until I'm done!

Christine (christinekinsella) | 25 comments l just finished this morning and submitted a review. I was pleasantly surprised, enjoyed it and have started Scarlet.

Although I liked the cover, I was a little ummmm...cautious about reading this book. As my review stated, I am challenged by the remote to my TV and was concerned this would be more techno than I could handle. Gotta say, I was very pleasantly surprised. I immediately purchased Scarlet and look forward to getting into it. Myers is a GR author and there appear to be four books total in this series - this promises to be a very good series.

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Christine, apart from Cinder and Scarlet, there will be Cress (release date in February) and Winter (release date in 2015), altogether they are the series with interwind plot and characters.

Susan Elizabeth (susan_e_lizabeth) Just finished. Good thing I found out from this thread yesterday that it was a series, so I was prepared for the cliffhanger ending, ha!

My theory is that the Lunar girl who helped the Queen spy is Rapunzel? Have to keep reading...

message 73: by Kristie, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kristie | 6859 comments Mod
Susan - I have the same thought about Rapunzel. I know the first chapter of Cress has been released and that may answer that question, but I'm avoiding reading it until the release date gets closer.

Christine - There are also a couple short stories that are background stories to the series. They are available for free online.

message 74: by Susan (new) - added it

Susan Elizabeth (susan_e_lizabeth) Kristie - I'm surprised it's not addressed in Scarlett! Does that character not appear in the second book? Man oh man, I have to read more.

Michael - I spent a summer reading through all of the Grimm's fairy tales. They're all short, so you can read a little bit here and there. It was an invaluable experience.

message 75: by Kristie, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kristie | 6859 comments Mod
No. In Scarlet there are two stories - one regarding Scarlet and one regarding Cinder. I can't say too much without giving things away, but that character is not in it at all. The two short stories are referenced though.

message 76: by Susan (new) - added it

Susan Elizabeth (susan_e_lizabeth) Ok got it. Adding the short stories to the list and recommending this whole series to my two friends who are big fans of YA trilogies (though...who isn't these days? haha)

Heh, that genre does seem to be very popular these days :)

Michael Susan wrote: "Michael - I spent a summer reading through all of the Grimm's fairy tales. They're all short, so you can read a little bit here and there. It was an invaluable experience. "

Great idea, Susan. I also downloaded Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales at the same time since I always thought The Little Match Girl was Grimm but now I see it was Andersen.

message 79: by Susan (new) - added it

Susan Elizabeth (susan_e_lizabeth) Oh yes - Hans Christian Andersen's collection has been on my too read list forever. Isn't Little Mermaid one of his, too? I think there was a dark fairy tale version before Disney.

Barnes & Noble also has all of these collections for under $10 and they look really awesome on your bookshelf! I have Poe, Sherlock, and Hemmingway from that collection.

Michael Yes, Little Mermaid is in the collection that I have, also The Princess and the Pea although that's probably not too disturbing! You can get these old collections for free on Project Gutenberg; I'm actually reading Poe at the moment, though I agree it would be nice to have some of these displayed on a bookshelf since they are such standards and are easier to browse that way!

Cherene | 4 comments I just finished this! Finally. First,

(this is a secret button for people who have finished the book!) (view spoiler)

Because of that I didn't expect to enjoy it and couldn't rate it 5-stars. Still, I can't believe that Marissa Meyer actually managed to surprise me. This was way better than I predicted. In fact, I thought it would be a 2-star or 3-star at most.

When are we reading Scarlet?!

^ Insert your interest there.

A lot of people have mentioned that. You should put a request in the buddy read thread. I've already read it, but would gladly join the conversation whenever you decide to read it.

Michael I would join, too, I'm reading Scarlet right now!

I'll add a comment in the buddy section to see how much interest there is. You guys can pick a date. :)

Edit**
Suggestion has been posted here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Ashley (ashleyb21) Cherene wrote: "(this is a secret button for people who have finished the book!) [spoilers removed]"

It's kind of hard to make it not predictable because everyone knows the story behind it. Scarlet however, is not as predictable, I thought at least. I think Scarlet is the better of the two so I would really love to do a buddy read.

Cherene | 4 comments Ashley wrote: "Cherene wrote: "(this is a secret button for people who have finished the book!) [spoilers removed]"

The story behind it was not what it made it predictable.

(view spoiler)

As for the story, I didn't feel it had anything but the basic story plot from the original story.

Agreed. Also, did you notice (view spoiler)

Although I partly agree that following the fairytale contributed to an overall feeling of predictability. During the whole story you know that (view spoiler)

Ashley (ashleyb21) But the basics of Cinderella are there. She meets the prince, gets invited to the ball, loses a shoe ( or foot) and this story isn't finished so hopefully it will end with her getting the prince.

I didn't get the Phoenix reference unit now, that's cool that you caught that.

message 89: by Kristie, Moderator (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kristie | 6859 comments Mod
I missed the phoenix reference too! Good call Michael.

Cherene | 4 comments Wikipedia says that the series will have 4 books. With book 2 being Red Riding Hood, book 3 being Rapunzel, and book 4 being snow white. I think Queen Lavena as the witch from snow white was an obvious conclusion because of the mirror reference.

I think that Meyer will grow stronger as a writer throughout the series.

In Meyer's discuss questions she asks, "Is there a fairy Godmother character in Cinder?"

I'm curious, what do you guys think?

Savanes | 2107 comments I don't remember who mentioned Dr. Erland but I agree that he would be the godmother character.

Ashley (ashleyb21) That was me. I thought it was an interesting question and the only person who really could be the "fairy godmother" is the Dr. No she didn't get a dress and a carriage from him but he was the only one to help her throughout the book. He did give her some sweet gear at the end of the book though.

Ashley (ashleyb21) Just went and reread some parts of Cinder. Cress is definitely Dr. Erland's daughter! He mentions his daughter, Crescent Moon, she's a shell and about the same age as Cinder. We've already met Cress once, she's about the same age as Cinder and she's a shell. Cress is just her nickname, not her full name.

Also Winter was mentioned as being Queen Levana's stepdaughter. She became prettier than the Queen so she made her mutilate her own face. It was also suggested that Kia marry Princess Winter.

Great observations Ashley. I feel like the whole series is coming together. I'm looking forward to Cress even more now. :)

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments Ashley, thanks for bringing those observations up, I also cannot wait to start reading Cress, especially, that the teaser chapter was really promising :)

Ok. Y'all have made me download Scarlet - you've piqued my curiosity! (Even though I didn't think Cinder was all that great - good, but not great). Goodreads makes me spend money sometimes! :o) Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles, #2) by Marissa Meyer

Brightness (brightnessreads) | 429 comments I finally finished! I thought it was wonderful and I blew through it when I finally got a chance to sit down and read it.

Of course, it's Cinderella and a lot of the plot twists were predictable, but the highlight is the spin and originality that she put into the story.

I agree that Dr. Erland was kinda like a fairy godmother, but I almost think that Iko fits the roll better.

It was Iko that gave Cinderella her dress, brought her the new shoe, and helped her fix up her pumpkin carriage. What do you think.

I'm reading Glitches and The Queen's Army and then starting Scarlet. I think I'm really going to love this series. :)

Alycia (bookhound18) Karlee- I agree! I'm really loving this series too. I hadn't thought of Iko being the Fairy Godmother....hmmmm....I think you're probably right on that! :) I've been dreading reading Scarlet cause I don't want to wait so long for the next one to come out when I'm done with it. lol

I know! I love when I discover series that have been out for a while and are nearly or completely finished. It sucks having to wait! I feel like it's Harry Potter again and I'm just counting down the days! :)
