Natalie Owens (nataliegowens) | 3 comments Hello everyone. Thanks to Dan Porter who sent me an invite to join this group.

About me... I'm a lawyer turned writer. Well, I was really always a writer, I just needed to convince myself to follow my heart. I live in Malta now, after 11 good years in Atlanta, GA. I have a husband and four year old son, and I love life.

What I do: I'm an author of thoughtful romance. I like to write to entertain but also to make people feel and think about something. I believe in the power of a woman, a power to be used for growth. People don't always start out standing at the perfect vantage point, but the journey is just as satisfying as reaching the destination. My heroines are vulnerable and sometimes damaged, but because of that, they have inner strength to defy the odds. They are a product of their time (eg, historical novels), and they also learn to fight the status quo.

Now, that said, I love happy endings. Although my dark fiction (my alter ego) does not provide much hope by the end, I happen to be a hopeless romantic. I don't write high literature, but I write stories that hopefully readers will want to read. Stories that will help someone, somewhere, feel better and not give up at something they want to do/achieve.

I love the premise of this group. We are all strong, but we don't always start out that way. The important thing is to work towards full empowerment, because we own ourselves as women, at least for as long as we breathe.

Looking forward to interacting with you all.

message 111: by Niall (new)

Niall Teasdale Hi, I'm Niall, and I'm not exactly sure why I got invited to the group, but it looks kind of interesting so why not...

I write books with strong female characters, which I won't push here, and I like reading them too. I'm not sure I qualify as having a feminist outlook though. I tend to think men and women are basically humans, but there are actually differences between them other than the obvious ones. Many of my female characters like sex, which seems to get me into more than a little trouble. So, I may be here under false pretences. Hope not.

Anyway, nice to be here, looking forward to seeing what's going on.

Adriana Hi everybody,
I found this group browsing through the site.
My name is Adriana and I'm from Sweden. I was raised by a feminist mother with idols such as Simone de Beauvoir, Marie Curie and Madonna, of course ;-)

I'm a computer programmer but love literature, art and history. I have a soft spot for historical stories portraying women, but read almost anything I can get my hands on.

Can't wait to explore the feminist world with you all :-D

message 122: by Ami (last edited Jul 23, 2013 01:03PM) (new)

Ami (aimdoggg) Hi everyone. New to the group. Thank you for inviting me. I've been pretty busy this summer, but I hope to participate in the group reads and discussions anyway.

I have 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys ages 7 on down and a few months ago we went through a "firefighter" phase. We read every children's firefighter and fire safety book the library had. My girls are the ones who pointed out to me that the common thing throughout all the books is that there were very few female firefighters. This meant something to them because their grandma- my mom- is a firefighter and they wanted to read a book with someone like her where a woman was the main character and not a sidekick or victim or secretary. So we wrote one and gave it to my mom on Mother's Day. Firefighter Mary was a hit with the kids I know and is on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble.com.

Women have come a long way in recent years but there is still plenty of room for equality. I want to show my girls and boys examples of strong women to help them grow into respectful adults to help make the world an even better and equal place.

Looking forward to participating in the group.

Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo (wwwgoodreadscomAnneMolinarolo) Hello! Thanks to Dan Porter for inviting me.

I really don't consider myself as a feminist. I am single, have a son, and two grandchildren. I worked for the Social Security Administration and took retirement early because I had become disabled. I love politics, though you all may not like my Libertarian views. That's okay because I don't like to share my views on Goodreads.

I do love to read! My cats get slightly upset with me if I read for long periods of time - it cuts into their seeking attention time. I usually read Thrillers, Literary Fiction, and Classics. I will try any genre or book if it looks interesting. I do like characters that are strong women. I respect women such as Mother Theresa and Condoleezza Rice.

Pat | 3 comments Hello, I'm Pat Perrin. I usually write in collaboration with my husband, Wim Coleman, and we're both F's. And yes, we write strong female characters. Thanks for the invitation to this good group.

Our latest novel, Mayan Interface, features an older heroine. For a story about a very strong young girl, try our award-winning YA historical novel, Anna's World.

Had to congratulate Bronwyn on the birth of her baby...Doesn't your name mean 'white shoulders' in Welsh (No guesses as to where I'm living)?

The name I post under here is my author name, Lucinda Elliot, but I'll answer to just about anything that isn't sexist.

I am very pleased to find this group, I have a thing about the fact that women are letting sexism raise it's ugly head all over, being too complacent, accepting sexist attitudes to resurface in the media, being too soft on porn, etc. Rant, rant.

I live in Wales, and write Gothic and read and improve my Welsh and French do other things and am pleased to meet you all.

message 134: by Laura (new)

Laura (laurajwryan) | 1 comments Hi, I'm Laura, Dan Porter invited me to this group and I'm looking forward to exploring, following and participating in F-word discussions. (Clever name choice!)

I'm a Goodreads Author (two novels: Dusty Waters, A Ghost Story and The Fractured Hues of White Light); I also dabble in poetry, I'm an artist and a photographer. I do work a full time day-job as a registrar for an art collection, I've been married to my Fred for 28 years and we have a grown son, so I have experience with juggling the creative life and the reality of life, and being a woman just makes it all extra interesting as I've run up against plenty of gender bias and some lingering old-fashioned expectations (apparently, I'm not very lady-like, oh well!)

Reading a good book is my relaxation, Harper Lee, Joyce Carol Oates, Doris Lessing, Iris Murdoch, Janet Frame, Gina Berriault and Virginia Woolf are some of my most favorite authors, and my recent discoveries of emerging writers Kio Stark and Vanessa Veselka are outstanding additions to my "look for more" list. I do love writing book reviews on Goodreads and I look forward to finding new books to read through this group.
