There is a category which is listed under Listopia but not here -- YA about teens with problems. I have been reading several and would like to discuss them, but there is not folder. Maybe Teen Angst?

But is that sort of contemporary? When you say "problems" or angst, I tend to think of modern stuff, which would be in contemporary. But I really have no clue...
The more I read in the Challenge, the more I think we may want to reconsider the traditional labels for classification of books (ah, it's the librarian in me!). Some areas just don't seem to work, at least for me. For example, I posted in the Christian section about Matali Perkins book, which has a strong moral/ethics/religious type of theme but would not necessarily be considered "Christian" (sorry, but I think that is kind of discriminatory anyway). The more we discuss on the multicultural board and the sci-fi/fantasy boards, the more I think we might want to be forerunners of new designations.
That's a good point, I think. Maybe "Christian" should be reclassified as Religion and Philosophy. (It would make it less likely that I would entirely skip over that folder...)
Fiona, we also don't have a horror/gothic folder. When I read Tithe, I considered it horror/gothic, but apparently it is not classified that way. It would help for challenges if descriptions did have folders, especially when asked to read a genre we're not familiar with and may see differently. (Where is the group input folder? I did look, but is it inside of another?)
There's a section in the mystery folder labeled "YA Horror".
That sort of does make sense, though, because paranormal, at least is a big trend right now, and it doesn't always sense to have it lumped with fantasy/sci-fi. Especially when it's such a big category now. But then there would have to be rearranging and what not. Troublesome either way.
I need some help. Has anyone here read Push by Sapphire (the book that was turned into the movie Precious)? I have a mother of a student that wants to know if it is appropriate. I know that it probably isn't for her, but she wants to know for what age it is appropriate if not now...
But, I haven't read it... so- HELP!

I read it... How old is the girl? It's pretty graphic, and pretty brutal. There is a LOT of cussing, and Precious is pretty descriptive about the abuse that she suffers at the hands of both parents... I don't really know that I am qualified to put an age on books, but if I were a parent, I would try and dissuade my children from reading it until they were 16/17+, and even then, I think I would want to read it with them, or have open dialogue about it. I would say that, for sure, it is more of an adult book than a YA book, and I would be hesitant to suggest it to any teenagers I know. My little brother just turned 18, and while I don't know that I would say he's too young for it, or wouldn't be able to handle it (he probably could...) but, I would not recommend the book to him.
My real suggestion- have that mom read the book. It isn't very long, and it reads pretty fast. Have her read it, and then decide if she wants her teen to be reading it.
16 and older if that! It really depends on the maturity level because it is pretty graphic and unsettling.

Sadly, the tickets to hear Neal Shusterman were gone before I heard about the event, but I managed to snag tickets for Meg Cabot. The tickets are SUPPOSED to be free through Ticketmaster, but they tacked on their $1 convenience fee. Dirty rats...
The authors are reportedly going to sign stuff for an hour each. I plan to be in line!

I just wanted to let everyone know that Barnes and Noble's website has a huge sale on books for under $5 each, and that includes YA novels like Blue Bloods, and Sarah Dessen books, etc.

Are these sale books only on the web? Do stores have these sales too?
Perhaps we should have a folder for folklore/fairy tales. It has been a category on the challenges and seems to have a fair number of books that apply to the category.
