How did you find the Outlander Series?

I have a Question??? I am curious how the audio compares to the book? I have reread all of the Outlander series and think maybe the audio will offer something different or a change but kinda only want to invest if it is worth it. Anybody here have any opinions? Thanks!

I am picking up things I never did when I read it. Davina Porter does a fantastic job!

Heather: there are very few readers as good as Davina Porter. I swear I can't picture anyone elses voice!! She does all the accents, all the voices, and everything...totally fun to read them this way...plus, as I always say, you can cook, walk, garden, etc. What's not to like!!
I agree with Lisa. The audiobooks are excellent. You'll start hearing Davina's Jamie and Claire voices if you've listened to a few when you go back and try and read the books!
i'm picking up on so many sublties that I missed whiel reading the books, like the clues DG puts in throughout them - ie. dougal and geillie - there were hints that they were having an affair but i totally missed it until I listened to outlander; or the hints in voyager about laoghaire and jaime...plus they are a great way to keep me entertained on my 2 hour communite each day
I got hooked just recently when iTunes featured the Outlander audiobook as the book of the month in March when I was looking for a LONG listen for a spring break road trip. Needless to say, I had to make sure my girls had their headphones on for many parts! ;) I've since read DiA and am a bit more than halfway through Voyager. I'm living and breathing it right now, and having a hard time concentrating on work or sleeping as much as I should! I hope the grip eases a bit as I move further past the rising and the separation - the middle of DiA through the reunion in Voyager just ripped my heart out and left me feeling heavy and weepy all the time. It's been a while since I've been so enthralled!
I worked part-time at a B&N bookstore in 2002. A co-worker recommended the Outlander series. I bought the first 5 books and they sat on my shelves for a few years. I first tried reading Outlander in 2008. Got about a third of the way through and was too bored with it to finish. Picked it up again about a year ago, still couldn't finish. Picked it up again in April as part of a Goodreads challenge, finally finished and now I am obsessed!

I bought the book probably 5 years back, tried to read it about 3 years ago and only got to about page 20, and then last August I picked Outlander up again and read through the whole series in a couple months. It is hands down my favorite series and Outlander is one of my top 5 favorite books. Safe to say I'm also obsessed! ;)
A friend loaned me Outlander about 2 1/2 yrs ago. I was skeptical because had just finished reading a really stupid book about Scotland and time travel (will not mention the author), but my friend said, "Oh, you mean by (so and so)? This book is nothing like that." So I read it and was immediately hooked, and ended up buying the whole series for myself. Am now reading it for the second time. It is unbelievable how these books grab the reader and make us live the stories. I have also read all the LJ books. Can't wait for more, and I love these discussions !!
I found OUtlander in a bookstore in Heathrow airport about a year after it came out. I was looking for something to read on the flight home to the US. I never slept a wink, it was the shortest flight I was ever on because I was so engrossed in Outlander that I could not put it down! I was hooked and have waited impatiently for every sequel since! One of my all time fav series! IF only it was not so long between books. I have withdrawal symptoms.
I'm always asking people what they're reading whenever I see they're carrying around a book. One day at work a woman was reading a very thick paperback and as she was leaving I asked her. She raved about the series... I got the first one, Outlander and began reading it, before I finished I bought the next three. I've read the series several times.I wish I could thank that gal!
My aunt started reading the series a few years ago. We got talking about books, history, etc, and she recommended the Outlander books to me.I've enjoyed every minute reading them and have never looked back.
As for most inspiring characters...
I'm most inspired by Master Raymond. I find so much comfort and strength in his healing ways and gentle nature. I still get choked up when I read the scene in which Claire is healed/cleansed after her miscarriage in Dragonfly In Amber. Beautiful scene!
I ride the bus in the morning, I talk to this lady everyday, and one day she tells me she has a book I may like (Im big into historical fiction). She brought it for me, I contemplated it for about 3 days because of the thickness of it. But once I started reading it, I was hooked and now onto the 3rd book. I saw her on the bus after not seeing her for a while. And was like Thank You ! I love the books !
Outlander was the first historical-romance book I read. It opened up an entire new genre for me, since the Outlander series, needless to say, was just captivating.
Outlander was recommended to me by a friend. She kept talking about it and finally I got it on a book swap web site. It sat on a shelf for a few weeks while I read some other things and then finally I picked it up. Didn't love the first few page (at least not the first time around) but once Claire got to Scotland, I could not put it down. When I finished the first book, I looked online and saw that it was a whole series with several books! So I got the next one, and the next one, and the next one... and the rest is history :)
Finally got my boss reading it! She kept hearing me talk about it around the office and said she was interested. I was unsure whether or not to encourage her. It's almost like a secret society and your very selective as to who to let in. I told her I would lend her or buy her a copy. I kept putting it off though. She had planned a trip and said she wanted the book for her flight and if I didn't give it to her she was going to go buy it herself. So I broke down and bought it for her.
Now she shares little tidbits of where she is and I'm loving it. She said, "I am at the part where...Claire and Jamie just got married. I had to keep reading to see if they actually consumated the marriage!!"
Mwahahaha!!
I got this book by mistake thinking I was getting Hunger Games ( I had a brain fart or something and couldn't remember the name of the book and thought it was Outlander.) Well that was the best mistake ever! I still haven't read Hunger Games since I'm so obsessed with Outlander.
I heard about it on the Kindleboards. Everyone loved Outlander so much I thought I might as well try it. I'm sure glad I did.
Hunger Games is excellent, but it's barely a quarter of Outlander's size. My older sister was reading it when I was about 16. I borrowed Outlander from her, then got my own copy.
I found Drums of Autum while vacationing in Alaska (of all places). I was going to buy it, but then realized it was part of a series so when I returned home I bought Outlander and as they say the rest was history.
The Outlander series are in my opinion, along with the ladies in my book club and the thousands of Outlander fans...the BEST in historical fiction. Diana Gabaldon is an incredible writer/researcher and you must love to read as her books are quite large. I think the bigger the better!
I heard about it on The Bronze Horseman group site on Goodreads - probably one of the few who read and fell in love with TBH before reading Outlander and not the other way around!
Outlander was offered free for Kindle. I got it. Got hooked by chapter 2 and ddownloaded the remaining six books. I am now over halfway through Echo in the Bone. I've read them straight through. Like one big book.
Addie, you just wrote my story almost. I read them all straight through after the freebe from Kindle and now I'm listening to them on my shuffle - which is charging as I write.
I love romance books, and i always heard people say that this was a good series, but i didn't figure it was that amazing. Finally, i was like i'll give it a chance and i fell in love.
Addie, That's what I did - read them straight through... I'm so glad you love them :) I've yet to find another male hero like Jamie.

I was born & raised in Fayetteville, that was formed by joining Cross Creek & Campbellton into one town. I used to love to go to the old Cross Creek cemetery and look at the old tombstones. In fact, that is where we got our son's name from. My parents are from Wilmington and we spent many summers in the mountains. I've been to New Bern & seen Tyron Palace and other historic homes. I felt like I was visiting an old friend once Jamie & Claire made it to NC.
That's so cool!! My husband and I would love to move to NC and that's really our dream to raise our kids there. Right now we are stuck in N. Cali and the kids keep getting older. haha! Addie have you read Into the Wilderness the story is based in NY around 1800's - not to far from you :)
Like a few of you above I got Outlander as a freebie when I first got my Kindle. I can't believe how addicted I got so fast. I bought the whole series,read them one after the other till I got to Echo. Read half of Echo then stopped and read the Lord John Series and now I am re reading Echo. I LOVE these books! Leea, I live in Northern CA also. I think Jamie would love the Mountains,the weather and the Redwoods. : )
Oh when was Outlander free on Kindle? My kindle arrived today so hit me with some recommendations ladies ;)

Megan - each day they add or delete free books on the Kindle site. When you go into Kindle ebooks, look on the left side for free books. You might enjoy Stephen R Lawhead he has a number of series. I've read the Avalon series and loved it. It also takes part is Scotland.
Megan, if you check the amazon kindle pages regularly, you will find books listed for free. They do not stay on that list for ever. This is where I found my free Outlander with bonus. I downloaded it and then forgot about it while I read my other books. Once I started, I could not stop.. I check Amazon every couple of days to see what they are offering.
I was starting to feel silly and guilty right around my fourth re-reading of the Twilight series, so was surfing around for SOMETHING as enthralling and maybe it was on a B&N blog that someone mentioned it. I ordered 'O' for my Nook - and like so many others, continued ordering and reading the other 6, non-stop, as if they were all one huge novel. Since my daughter was experiencing Twilight withdrawals as well, she started reading the series - and next thing we know, we're winging it to Scotland and Paris to trace J&C's travels and get as close as possible to their world and time. My 75 year old mother is on her first reading now - halfway through 'Echo...' so we're getting our occasional 'fix' through her first-timer's experience, and, from websites like 'My Outlander Purgatory', 'Outlandish Observations', DG's site and others...but it's verra tryin', y'ken...
I just found out that there is a graphic novel of Outlander in Jamie's POV. Has anybody read it? Is it good?
Yes, I liked it well enough, most people didn't.
Outlanders is in my minds eye - before the movie. The graphic novel didn't live up to the visions I had created.
I was browsing amazon feeling bored just after Christmas 2009. I looked up good historical novels people had recommended, and the name cross stitch (uk name for outlander)kept coming up. Hmm i thought well everyone can't be wrong.I read rewievs on amazon and thought this book is worth buying. So pleased i discovered these books as they are incredible! I'm hoplessly obsessed!
I really can't remember, how is that even possible!I must have been about 15-16ish and in high school when I first read Outlander. Maybe I came across it in the library or in a used book store.

My sister-in-law got me started with Julie Garwood books(The Bride,The Wedding,Ransom,Saving Grace and The Secret) and I totally fell in love with Scotland/Highlands and the whole romance thing.Then my husband deployed and I started buying all kinds of medieval scottish romance novels until a friend recommended Outlander......
I started reading Outlander because it was offered for free on my Amazon Kindle, the description didn't sound that interesting but I started reading it because the reviews on Amazon were really high. Of course I fell in love with the series by the time I reached the first half of Outlander. I'm an English major so I'm always looking for a great read to suck me in [which for me can be a challenge] so I am happy that I found Outlander. I started reading in Jan and now I just finished Drums of Autumn.
My critique partner told me about the books. I read them all in several months. I was hooked. Love Diana's writing.

I think it was the writing style, and her constant name brand dropping really got under my skin. I hated the 'whatchamacallits' AKA... Annoying, impotent, pale dudes... Ya.. couldn't stand them.
