Suzanne Price-Halligan (spricehalligan) A good friend got me hooked! Another friend gave me a lovely plaid lined picnic basket with the "blood of my blood" verse in it for our wedding. My four-year-old daughter is Claire. Yes... Outlander has affected me! :) Fell out of contact -- and very much embarrassed my nine-year-old son when I stumbled upon Echo in the Bones outside a Borders and yelped loudly!

Dee | 1 comments Loved all of her books in this series. I am alittle disappointed having waited all this time for Echo In the Bone.
Not enough of J&C and it seems so choppy the whole first half. Finally got going about then and it is so mixed up w/ so many time periods at times I felt she was writing a Lord John book inside of this one. Not enough of Bri and Roger and their storyline is so up in the air. I wish she had put another 200 pages into this or split it into 2 books out sooner than the usual 3 years.
Just have to hope for the best that she does write another J&C book. I looked on her site and she is under contract for a 4 book anthology anout Roger Mac's mom and dad,
I guess i should be happy getting any new Jamie and Claire but it is alittle disappointing after the long wait.
The first several books are so extrodinary an it is an exciting series to read. have read it many times all 7 books and love it and give it to people as gifts.
Enjoy if this all new to you and good reading.

Emily | 18 comments My mom gave me Outlander when I was in high school and going away for a few weeks in the summer. I liked it, but I don't think at 16 I really GOT it. Then when I was in college she brought home Fiery Cross from the library, and the characters seemed familiar, so I stopped reading and found out about all the books in between. I started over from the beginning of the series and didn't emerge for days at a time...I got my boyfriend to read them around when ABOSAA came out and even HE liked them. We took a trip to Scotland together 2 years ago and did a tour of the Highlands (but no one mentioned the series, I was disappointed) and then spend a few nights in Inverness. I was suprised by how big it was, I was expecting a little village. But our first morning there, he took me to Clava Cairns, which we figured is approximately where Craig na Dunne is in the story (it's a different ancient stone site) and he proposed! It was awesome.

April (aprilbosko) | 11 comments My grandfather introduced the series to me. He told me how he had read this wonderful book, Outlander, and he hassled me once a week until I started reading it. Once I called him, in tears cause I didn't want it to be over, and told him I was done with the first book and I was HOOKED...he bought me the rest of the series. It has been such a wonderful thing to share with my Gramps, our relationship has grown so much, sharing the love of the series. As a surpirse he bought me a signed copy of Echo in the Bone.
I am hoping that for the next book we can go together to a signing and reading. I love sharing this with him!

So far I am really loving Outlander! Thanks Cynthia :)
Have you read all the books in the series? Are they all as good as Outlander?

message 110: by ChristinaRae (new)

ChristinaRae | 295 comments That question opens up quite a can of worms, as you may have noticed on some of the posts for the most recent book; but I think the general consensus is that the first six are amazing, although everyone has their favorites.

message 111: by Alycia (new)

Alycia | 236 comments I have not looked at the posts for the latest book, but no book is ever quite equal in a series. I expect that and for others to have obvious favorites, I really just wanted an honest opinion that they were better than mediocre. Thank you ChristinaRae. :)

I love all of them, each of them are unique in their own way! Echo is just a wee bit different IMHO, some parts I didn't care for_ as_ much.... but other parts of the book I absolutly loved! So keep reading...and as Diana always says "wait and see" !!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know many who read the series and don't get HOOKED!!

:)

message 117: by Alycia (new)

Alycia | 236 comments I love to reread great books. But each book is long, so it will take me a while to read and then reread them and I'm not a slow reader. I am impressed that you and others have read them so much. It really shows how well and loved this series is.

message 118: by ChristinaRae (new)

ChristinaRae | 295 comments Well-loved is the nice way of putting it. Obsessively drooling over Jaime is the more accurate way of putting it. [and I know I'm not alone!!:)]

Alycia | 236 comments Hi Regina. I have wondered if it is best to take a break after each book or do you read this series back to back? I am a little over half way through Outlander which I am loving, but it is not only a time commitment to reading it, but an emotional commitment as well. I am definitely invested into the characters and the story.

Alycia,
The books are long and definitly a time grabber! I came upon the series late, meaning I didn't have to wait years for the next book to come out. They were so captivating that I read them one after another....mostly at night or when traveling for my job. They became my respite, if that makes any sense...now,I can't imagine going to bed without my Jamie... :) there is so much meat to the stories, I keep going back to see what I missed. I also enjoy other Outlander discussion groups! They do chapter overviews which prove very interesting and helpful when trying to tie things together, not to mention tons of FUN!!

I also follow the Yahoo groups and one of the facebook groups. I also have Voyages of the Artemis bookmarked. I have read through the series twice and am now listening to the unabridged audiobooks in my car(am on Voyager). Talk about obsessed! Or was it addicted! But I make no apologies. each reread brings different thoughts to mind, doncha think? :)

message 132: by Alycia (new)

Alycia | 236 comments Angela, you definitely do not have to apologize. We can all be addicts together. I find when rereading books I always catch things I miss or forget things. I hope to reread this series again and again once I finish reading all books the first time :)

Cynthia, there are definitely worse things to be addicted to. This is one of my favorite groups as well :)

Alicia Garcia | 63 comments Yeah, i'm on my second re-read of the series, and it's amazing what i catch this time around that i didn't the first time. There are these little parts that talk about different concepts that i hadn't really noticed before. Like in Voyager, the part where Claire is in Boston after having found out that jaime is alive and is attempting to make a decision on whether or not she should go back. The part where she talks about how some people have the feeling of things. how some people are compelled to move the things around them to reflect who they are and some people don't. Some people turn that sort of thing inward and the things around them remain sparse and pretty much bland. I'm the kind of person that has the feeling for things, and my boyfriend is the opposite.

message 136: by Shandals (last edited Dec 27, 2009 03:09PM) (new)

Shandals | 7 comments I picked it up at a mall bookstore back in the mid 90s. I had recently developed a slight obsession with Scotland after having seen Braveheart. I was also getting into the time travel genre. The book was on sale for $3.99. A time travel book, about Scotland, for $3.99! It couldn't get any better.

After having read countless romance novels, Outlander was the first book that I would think about when not reading it. It was the first book series to make me cry. It was the first time that I fell in love with a character from a book. I haven't found an author since who writes like Diana.

ChristinaRae | 295 comments Maybe we should be worshipping DG instead.

I know what you mean about crying! I rarely cry, I cried three times over Outlander. And I also having just read it think about it all the time too, especially Jamie and his romance with Claire.

message 140: by Alicia (new)

Alicia Garcia | 63 comments I never cry at books, but i cried during Voyager when Claire finds out about Loghaire, and she is so heart broken. I was really upset at that part, but it turned out okay so i can read that part now and not feel my chest squeeze tight.

message 141: by Alycia (new)

Alycia | 236 comments Man, I saw that spoiler about Loghaire (or however you spell it) and I am disappointed and cannot wait to see how Jamie explains that one away. Gotta get through DFIA first!

message 142: by Terri (new)

Terri Russell | 15 comments I do research before I read any book. Don't want to start in the middle of a series...GRIN! But I had these books written on my desk at work and a friend of mine told me the best books she had ever read was the Outlander series. Much to my surprise that was what I was considering! I have read straight through and I am in Echo and the Bone now. Amazing Books. I don't know what I will do when I am through!!! I hope the next book is not 2 or 3 years...But I can always read them again!!!

Me too Alycia! I'm half way through DFIA and found out about the "Lawhore" situation... I was also aware of the 20 year separation and was so mad! Although it makes sense now, since I've gotten to know Claire better in DFIA - I don't think she would have left her daughter sooner than that. I also don't know if 'Lawhore' had any kids... aaahhhh! I love this series!!!

After the cliffhanger at Dragonfly, I couldnt help myself... I went ahead with Voyager and Drums. Only reading Outlander after just to tide me thru the wait for Fiery Cross.

It didnt affect the story any. Although Dragonfly is still the hardest read for me, I like the form of the book. It started in the present time going backward. So for me, it become a mystery-type of novel. And thats what I was looking for back then. got fed up with romance back then.

Which is funny becoz I was looking for something more than the random love story... and got one.

message 148: by Alycia (new)

Alycia | 236 comments Everyone has said that DFIA has a cliff hanger and you want to go start Voyager immediately. I cannot wait to see what happens in DFIA!I am glad you like this one, right now I am not far into it, but am impatient to see how everything unravels.

By in large my favorite book yet!! Fell in love with Jamie instantly! Wondering if anyone knows if a movie is till rumored to be in the works...my vote is for Kevin McKidd as Jamie. Saw him in Made of Honor and immediately said to myself..."that's Jamie"!!

I did find DFIA a bit tedious at the beginning while they were in Paris, but it picks up about a 1/4 way in - I am beginning to see that everthing in Diana's plot and storyline has a purpose... regardless of how unimportant it seems at the time. Probably one of the reasons people love re-reading the books. She is a genious.
