Jan Underwood | 7 comments I have one one-fiction book and one novel going. The non-fiction is Robert Sapolsky's _Behave: The Biology of Humans at Our Best and Worst._ It's fascinating but also dense and slow-going, and very long--I will feel quite smug when I manage to finish it.

The novel (actually a set of interconnected short stories) is Ursula LeGuin's _Changing Planes_--part of my yearslong project of reading all of LeGuin.

message 6207: by Blue (new)

Blue | 47 comments I have not read The Bridges of Madison County. I fell in love with the movie immediately. With Meryl Street, there was no doubt I would cry. I think of this movies when that type of rain starts to fall.
Now, I want to read the small novel. Many people visited the covered bridge. Nothing like romance to make you feel better.

message 6209: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (valeriegiselle) | 2 comments My name is Valerie and I’m from Brisbane Australia.

My favourite genre is contemporary fiction with a focus on female protagonists—with added focus on life literature, historical and romance. However I do read other genres if the stories intrique me.

I always read two books at a time - one in print and one as an Ebook. There’s just so many great stories out there.

I am currently reading The Bass Rock by Evie Wyld and Jennifer Probst’s The Start of Something Good.

message 6216: by Colleen Chi-Girl (new)

Colleen Chi-Girl (colleenchi-girlakacolleensnapped) | 2 comments Okay, readers, young and old, and in between, this is a knockout debut novel that I finished quickly (3-4 hours) on audio today.

It is an incredible, heartfelt, and disturbing debut novel that gives a perspective of an Arabic immigrant family called Home Is Not a Country

This young author knows how to grab you in the beginning and not let go. There are so many important take-aways....being of a different culture, new to the US, shy, afraid. I LOVED the narrator.

I don't rate too many books 5 * but I did with this one.

Hope you enjoy.
Colleen

message 6223: by Jan (new)

Jan Underwood | 7 comments I just finished an Ursula LeGuin book--part of my yearslong project to read her entire body of work. "Changing Planes" is a collection of interconnected short stories. The "planes" are literal airplanes but also, of course, because it's Ursula LeGuin, metaphysical planes. The narrator visits different "planes" of existence and tells us anecdotes about them. The stories are basically ethnologies of fictitious cultures, which are entertaining in themselves and also usually make a subtle commentary on our own culture.
