Welcome, lethe. And don't ever give up on books that you've meant to read for many years. Recently I've read books that have been on my list for over 30 years!!!! (Oh my, that makes me sound old!). But I'm so proud of myself because I finally got to them. And this group helped me to actually read them. The yearly Bingo challenge encouraged me. Also, the monthly group reads are nice because you know that there are other people reading along with you in case you have questions or want to discuss it. So enjoy!!

message 4908: by MKay (new)

MKay | 277 comments Terris is right. I have read more and things I might have never picked up before. And many were great!
I need to check on my BINGO-haven't taken time all summer to look into that.

Welcome Rose! Sounds like you're ready to read different books than you've been reading, and you'll get lots of good recommendations here! Enjoy :)

message 4911: by Simbad (new)

Simbad Hi! I'm Rafael, 35, from Spain. The main reason for me to be here is to improve my English. I want to get the Advanced Certificate from Cambridge before the year ends and i realized that the best way to improve my formal English is to read, to read a lot. But besides that, since i got an Ebook for Christmas i have picked up the pace in reading books and i always have had an interest in reading the classics. So this group it's just the perfect combination, i get motivation for reading and for practicing my English talking with the other members.

See you around.

P.S: Needless to say, you can correct my writing anytime. Please do :)

I'm Sophie and I'm from Liverpool in the UK. I am currently serving as an aircraft engineer in the Royal Air Force. I'm new to Goodreads but not new to a great book! I was surprised as I was rating my books, just how classic-heavy my bookshelf is! Really looking forward to getting some great ideas for my next book and seeing what everyone thinks of my favourite classics! :)

message 4917: by DianeBai (new)

DianeBai Hello there!
I'm Diane, 21, living in Montreal and doing my masters in nutrition.

I love reading classics as they help me better understand the world and the functioning of the human psychology, as well as immerse myself in the everyday life of the last centuries and decades!

Some of my favorite classics are: Belle du Seigneur by Albert Cohen, Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, 1984 by George Orwell, The Brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevsky, Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell and many more!

I joined this group to discuss about classics with others, as few people in my entourage reads, not giving me the opportunity to share with them my reads.

Very excited to discuss books with all of you :)

message 4926: by See Min (new)

See Min Lim | 9 comments Hi, I'm See Min and I'm a secondary school student. I live in Singapore.

I used to dislike reading quite a bit when I was in primary school, especially English books but that changed after I read Pride and Prejudice.

It was only recently that I came to enjoy reading, after I picked up Pride and Prejudice since there was an excerpt in my literature guidebook and it seemed quite interesting. I loved it so much! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this kind of writing style.

I am also learning German right now during my free time (I'm still horrible at it though haha). Another pastime I enjoy is to read up on History, especially on the Habsburg (and it's successor Habsburg-Lorraine) and Romanov families.

Of course, not to forget Sleeping, which is the hobby of most these days too. ;)

Looking forward to discuss about classics with everyone!

Rosemarie | 1568 comments Hi, my name is Rosemarie and I love to read just about everything, but especially classics. I am a retired substitute teacher and am kept busy looking after two grandchildren four days a week, my 18 month old granddaughter two days a week, and my 6 and a half year old grandson the other two days. Monday is my day off, but I really do love looking after them.
Other than reading, I love travelling and taking advantage of all the wonderful things my home city, Toronto, has to offer.

Bonita (norfolkgirl) Hello Everyone! My name is Bonita. I live in Virginia and have been an avid reader throughout my life. I've enjoyed mostly fiction (drama, suspense, family sagas, legal thrillers, chick-lit, historical fiction, etc.) and biographies. I've just recently picked up crocheting (very relaxing). In addition to reading, I love to cook, going to jazz concerts, movies and plays, listening to music and riding my bike....oh and going to amusement parks with my grands.

Heidi Hello!
I'm Heidi, I'm a mother of two, thankfully my baby loves to listen to me read! I have always been a reader, I love all genres but the past few years I have been reading and re-reading the Song of Ice and Fire series. I have been a fantasy nut ever since I read Harry Potter as a child! As much as I read though, I have missed so many classics that I feel everyone else has read. Looking foward to joining the group!
