Hi, I'm Tina. I live in NY. I work for a historic house museum. It's the home of author Washington Irving. A great place for a self-proclaimed book nerd like myself to work.

My reading tastes are all over the map. 19th century Romantic writers are a favorite as well as Fitzgerald and Hemmingway and their bunch and finally The Beats. So like I said, I like a lot of different writers. My all time favorite book(s) is Lord of the Rings. I'm a HUGE fan of Tolkien. I also adore Mark Twain and Alice Hoffman.

I have an adult son, two dogs, a cat and a Hubby who teases I don't need to buy books. But I do so anyway. I also play video games as well as board games when I have the chance.

I saw this group mentioned in another group and thought "Hey! Folks like me!" I don't often read the current bestseller, for example I have just started reading Vanity Fair. I also talk/write a lot, so sorry if this is a super long post.

Marivi Sanz Hi, everyone! I'm Marivi, from the Basque Country, in Spain. I'm a GP, though I've always worked as a paediatrician, and my favourite pastime is reading as soon as I get out from work. My real life friends are not as avid readers as I am, so I wasn't used to talking about books until I started finding new friends via Twitter and now in Goodreads.
My favourite readings are from XIX c. British literature, Tolkien, Shakespeare, some contemporary romances from time to time, vampire novels, some fantasy... so basically, a little bit of everything :)
I love to see what other people are reading, as it makes me find new amazing books to read. So feel free to add me as a friend so I can see what you're all reading :)

message 4733: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 1 comments I'm Victoria, 25, from USA (I don't provide a state because I move a lot, but I am originally from South Carolina and that is where I consider home).

Currently, I am going through a transition period in my life. I spent many years in school studying Oceanography but I left school three semesters into a Master's program. For several reasons, primarily my ethics and principles clashed with the practices of my former university and second I am burned out. Which has led me to decide to possibly change fields - maybe leaving research and focusing more on outreach/education or changing all together and working in a non-science oriented organization.

I like learning and enjoy many different genres: history (non-fiction and historical fiction), science, classics, fiction...to be honest there is very little I won't read. I've joined this group in order to not only discover books I may not have otherwise known about but also to hear other people's opinions and ideas. I come from a family of bookworms - we have at least two bookcases in every room...and one bookcase in the bathrooms...yeah. While there are many books I enjoy and love I think one of my favorite authors is Edward Rutherfurd especially his book "Paris: The Novel". It is a sizable book but the writing is not only magic but informative (historical fiction).

Besides reading, I enjoy many different things I play the cello, I love working out, and I've become a decent baker. Like most of my family, I have a major soft spot for animals and can't resist picking up strays, getting them healthy, and finally finding them forever homes.

~ Victoria.

message 4738: by Ira (new)

Ira Bauman | 3 comments Hello All. I'm Ira from New Jersey. My reading interests are quite eclectic. I like Graham Greene, Velikovsky, Grisham, Ogden Nash, I.B. Singer, Neal Stephenson and also working on the older Classics. Sometimes, I'll find a new author. I'll get excited and start some binge reading. Then, I'll veer off in a new direction and go through an old textbook, such as on Economics or Algebra.
When I'm not reading, I play Classical Guitar (poorly), watch the Yankees and do needlepoint. (Yeah, I'm a man. Anybody got any problems with that?)
I am halfway through "My Cousin Rachel" and like it so far. It's definitely not the kind of book I would have normally chosen. I'm excited about this Classics group because I feel it will expose me to new areas of literature.

Hi and welcome Ira! Always glad to meet another new New Jerseyian! Coming from New Jersey, I have no problem with the fact that you like yo do needlepoint. I'm not messing with that one! Yankee fan here too!

You certainly list, as you put it, an eclectic array of authors. Some I've read and liked. I doubt that I would re-read old text books, especially Algebra (ugh, once was truly enough, never probably would have been better!!) but hey, whatever floats your boat! 😊

Our group will definitely expose you to all sorts of literature that you may or may not have heard about before but that's the best part of this group, along with its wonderful members and discussions!

Glad you jumped into My Cousin Rachel and are enjoying the book! Don't forget to check out the threads for the book discussions and also look into the future books we're planning on reading. There's a poll going on for our September reads that you should look in to too!

Meanwhile, happy reading! 🤗

Kate Hardman | 6 comments Hi Everyone! 'm Kate. I'm from Australia and have been on a mission to collect and (very slowly) read through all top books lists I can find anywhere.
I just finished Diary of Anne Frank, and Farenheit 451. I'm just about to start reading The Great Gatsby tonight.
Not sure what is considered a classic in this group but I feel that I just can't start reading newer books until I've read the golden oldies.
I'm a bit obsessive about it actually, I love hunting for books in the local op shops. I just bought a few yesterday - Darkness at Noon and a couple of others.
Still many more to buy and SOOO many on my shelves at home to read.
Thanks for reading!

Tonia (yestonia) | 177 comments Kate wrote: "Hi Everyone! 'm Kate...."

Hi Kate. Welcome to the group. If you take a look at the group bookshelf, you will see the books that have been considered by this group to be a classic - but basically, if it's something written before 1999 and people are still reading, re-reading and talking about it then it can be considered a classic.

I assume an op shop is the same as our charity shops? We have some around here with great book sections - I try to limit my visits as I get too carried away!

Nice to have you here. :)

Reshma Mohan | 7 comments Hello! I'm Reshma Mohan and I'm a university student. I'm an English major, which is a huge dream come true for me. I'm hoping that I will one day publish work that does justice to my deities: the Brontë sisters.

That being said, you can guess that my favourite novels are Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and tenant of wildfell hall. Pretty much all the Brontë novels are on my favorites list. That doesn't mean I don't read other British authors as well! 😊

Other novelists that I adore are Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, George Eliot and more! 😊
