Hi, Robin. I go up to Madison for doctor appointments regularly (VA and UW). I generally don't listen to audiobooks because I get distracted so easily. Also, when I'm having one of my headaches I usually end up falling asleep. Instead I usually have some music playing with the volume down low to help me relax.

Hi Tim! I'm sorry I didn't welcome you when you joined our group (I've been under the weather) but I certainly want to extend my welcome to you now. I read your introduction to the group with much interest since I am plagued and suffer with migraines as well. I've been having them since I was seven years old. I get the ones with auras which completely blind me and I can't see. When I get them they come with panic attacks because I know what I'm in for. I take imetrix and then I have to go to bed for at least two hours. When I can finally get up I have a pounding headache. The sensitivity to light and sound is excruciating! I'm usually very nauseous and I'm quite dizzy. I'm pretty out of it for at least three days. Sometimes I get several in one day or I one for three days in a row. I never know and because of that, making plans is something I don't like to do because I never know when I'm going to get one and I feel so unreliable to my family, friends and myself.

I'm in awe that you can read after you get one. I can't. I can't do much of anything. I can't concentrate, at all.

I'm glad to have met you and would love to hear your story. I've sent you a friend request that I hope you'll accept so that you can private message me so that way we're not taking up space here on the thread to talk about our health issues.

I hope you're having a good day.

N. G. G. Ellis (ngge) Hi all!
I'm Nate, I'm from... I'm not even sure anymore... soon I'll be in Roanoke, VA for three years, these last four years have been in Chapel Hill, NC, before that it was Rockville, MD. I'm a video game designer by trade and recently in charge of a tiny human (because "Yeah, I think I can work from home and take care of him.").

I tend towards Sci Fi/Fantasy in my reading but generally think of myself as well read. At least, I did until on a whim last year I put together a excel list of books I had read and realized it was much, much shorter than I had imagined. I've been making my way through various award winning books and classics ever since.

"Working" from home while raising a small one and moving frequently means I've talked to few other adults in recent history so I'm really looking forward to book discussions. This seems like an incredibly friendly place to do just that!

message 4609: by Emily (new)

Emily E (emstermeegs) Hello fellow book lovers!

My name is Emily and I live in Albany NY. I've been reading since I can remember - my Mom is a big reader and taught me to love reading as well. I love many different genres of books, from mystery to biography to poetry! I'll read it if it proves worthwhile. I very rarely will not finish a book, as once I've committed to reading something I have a hard time giving up. Sometimes a book can surprise you if you stick with it- and sometimes it won't.

Anyway, I joined this group because I wanted to connect with others on this site, expand my "To Read" list with suggestions and hopefully join in on some of the fun challenges, group reads and discussions within the group!

Happy Reading!

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Nate, there's a lot of sci-fi and fantasy lovers here. It's a genre a don't read enough of, but I do like classic science fiction. I completely understand about having few adults to talk to while working from home, my cats keep me company in the general day to day!

Welcome Emily, it's great that your mum got you reading. I try to finish books too, especially classics as a slow start can often lead to a rewarding experience, though not always!

Welcome Naveen, I'm sure you're kept busy with your studies, but I'm glad you've joined us. We have a wide variety of books that we read each month, so hopefully something will appeal to you.

message 4625: by Petrichor (new)

Petrichor | 196 comments I've already participated in some of the discussions, but have never really introduced myself.

So, hi everybody!

I'm female, from Austria (though I don't live there right now), recently turned 30 and like reading, but somehow never found the time. However, a few years ago I discovered audiobooks and after going though the whole ASOIAF series (as far as published, I mean) within one year, I started listening to other books as well. Not much later I discovered and joined Goodreads. Now I "read" while I'm on public transport, running, cooking or doing all sorts of arts & crafts, crochet, sewing, knitting or puzzle solving. I try to read/listen to books that are well-known and/or classics, which is why I joined this group as soon as I found it :-)
As a researcher in the natural sciences and science+math-enthusiast in general (i.e. nerd), I also love reading different kinds of science-related non-fiction.
I'm happy to be in this group and look forward to all the discussions we'll have! :-)

message 4630: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 2318 comments Hi,
I come from Denmark, so English is my second language. I have been hanging out in the ”Boxall's 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die” group for some years.

I am not trying to read all 1001 books, but getting to explore some new genres, knowing for instance if I want to read a book taking place during the first WW, I can pick one from the list and some one who knows much more about literature has selected a few for me.

Another list I am looking a lot at, when picking books is the “World Library Top 100 Books of All Time“. Unfortunately the corresponding group is not very active. Othello is on that list, so I came here for the group read of Othello. Also I have noticed the group many times before, when finishing a book and eyeing over the discussions, the tread from this group is often long and interesting.

My “home” genre is science fiction. I have recently become aware that I like books about ideas (rather than plot centred or character centred). A lot of science fiction tend to be about ideas (with the plot as an excuse for talking about the idea and sometimes the characters as flat as they can be).

I have three goals for reading:
1. To be entertained
2. Must give me something to think about. An idea, an interesting plot twist, a human emotion,....
3. Bragging rights. Yes, I did read War and Peace, and I don't mind talking about it ;-)

I typically read English books in English and all other languages in Danish translation if it exists. Othello, however, I did read in Danish translation. Old English is hard to read, and Shakespeare uses a lot of words.

message 4633: by Tonia (new)

Tonia (yestonia) | 177 comments Hi, Blueflower! Good to see you here. It's a shame the World Library group is so quiet as it's a nice list of books - you'll find this group very friendly though.

Are there many Danish SF writers?

message 4634: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 2318 comments Nope!

Erwin Neutzsky-Wulff is probably the only one worth mentioning. Never actually read any of his science fiction, but his introduction to Basic programming on the Commodore 64 had a big impact on my life. It is in Danish and I got it when I was 11-ish – before I was anywhere ready to read in English.

I have read these two Danish Science fiction books:
Arne Herløv Petersen: Fredsrejsen
Six hundred years after the nuclear war, small groups of people roam the jungle where Copenhagen once were.
I am the only one to rate it on Goodreads....

Nis Jakob: Syv Dage I District Copenhagen: Roman (Seven Days in District Copenhagen)
Denmark year 2099, clones are made from spare parts for the rich upper class... Not exactly a new plot.

In short: Don't bother with Danish science fiction. Read some Hans Christian Andersen, Karen Blixen, Peter Høeg, Johannes V. Jensen (Nobel Prize in Literature in 1944), Søren Kierkegaard, Herman Bang, Anders Bodelsen, Inger Christensen, Henrik Pontoppidan (Nobel Prize for Literature in 1917),.... instead.

message 4635: by Tonia (last edited Jun 10, 2017 01:01AM) (new)

Tonia (yestonia) | 177 comments Thank you, I'll look them up. My Danish is not very good, but I have been reading some Michael Sörensen - his language seems simple enough that I can understand so I am thinking I might challenge myself with more Danish literature.

message 4636: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 2318 comments You may find this list interesting. “Den Danske kulturkanon“
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/7...

The Danish Ministry of Culture have made some lists called the Danish Cultural Canon, including the Danish literature canon with 12 books. (The 12th book is a anthology of poems).

Isak Dinesen is Karen Blixen.

Colleen | 2 comments Hey all! I'm Colleen, and I live in California. Recently turned 30, and I'm a very distracted reader (I can't tell you how many books I've started and consider "active" reads, but there are quite a few).

I love playing piano, drawing, video games, and of course reading! My favorite genre is probably Sci-fi/Fantasy, leaning toward fantasy, but I've come to like most genres over the years. Mystery, thriller, suspense, horror, historical fiction, classics, epics, young adult, and recently became intrigued by historical books.

Looking forward to catching up on some classics. Pride & Prejudice is one of the very few classics I've read, and it's one of my faves.

Hey guys!
I come from Iran and I'm a student of English literature. As my major is literature I'm supposed to devote a lot of time to classics. I love psychology related books as well and have a thing for health books. I'm a feminist, vegetarian and animal rights activist. If you have any question upon these issues don't hesitate to message me. Everybody's welcome. Also would love to be in touch with guys who are studying the same major.
I'm planning to study my master in Norway, so please make sure to contact me if you are Norwegian since I'm very much into knowing people of that country and their literature!
See you!
