Brina Hi, Julie. Glad you joined. I have also made it a point to read classics from around the world this year. Hope you enjoy this group.

message 4552: by Tim (new)

Tim Smith Hi! I'm Tim and live in Rockford, Illinois (originally from Iowa). I joined this group around two weeks ago, but haven't posted anything because of health problems.

A couple of my health problems are chronic migraines (I have one daily) and light sensitivity which have prevented me from working for the past couple years. At first I watched a lot of television to bide my time, but the same shows all of the time just didn't cut it anymore. So I started reading more, especially over the past year. I tend to read a lot on my Nook or Kindle where I have the settings to where it is easier on my eyes and I can download a lot of classics for free. I tend to read a lot of classics that are in the public domain, so if I can't download them for free from Amazon or Barnes & Noble, I'll download them from Project Gutenberg or ManyBooks and use calibre (computer software) to load them onto either my Nook or Kindle.

I like to read classics of almost any type (including children's books, but not so much romance), mysteries, thrillers, science fiction, fantasy and non-fiction.

My hobbies now other than reading is computers and I'm a music collector (vinyl, cassettes and compact discs).

I've only read classics back in high school (which the ones that was required to read were boring) and now finding more classics that are more enjoyable to read.

Forced reading is one of my pet peeves at the moment. Surround youngsters with enough quality reading material and give them the free choice and they will find classics they love, force them to read something they hate and they will hate classics (and often reading as a whole) for a lifetime!

Welcome to the group. :)

message 4558: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome Tiletha and Tim. Glad you joined. And I echo Tonia's sentiments exactly. I detested all the books I read for school, and it wasn't until many years later when I joined this group that I started reading and enjoying classics again. I hope you both enjoy it here :)

message 4563: by Jaci (new)

Jaci McCon | 7 comments Hiya Everyone! I'm really looking forward to catching up on some of the classics that I missed back in the day and the conversations with all of you. As a Literature major, I did a ton of work in the classics and took a (long) breather to widen my horizons. I've been waiting for the right book to come across the group selections - something that I have never read before. Found a fit and I'm looking forward to jumping into the discussion for Brave New World (how did I NOT read that one?!) Nice to meet you all! :)

Gulli | 22 comments Hi, guys. I'm Gully, and I'm from London (UK). I am a school English teacher, and so I have been dipping my toes in YA fiction a lot of late. I tend to read most genres, however.

Some of my favourite classics include: To the Lighthouse, Crime and Punishment, Anna Karenina, Swann's Way, Rebecca, Pride and Prejudice, The Sound and the Fury, The Stranger, and... I think I'll stop there!

I am really keen on discussing books, so feel free to message me whenever. :-)

message 4582: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome, Gully. This is a great group for reading classics, although there has been some quality ya books produced recently. Anna Karenina is a great choice as a favorite book having recently read and enjoyed it. Hope you enjoy it here!

Hi Tim, I am just up the highway in Madison WI and my in-laws are in Mount Morris, IL so we are often passing through Rockford. i'm glad to know that your health challenges don't stop you from reading. I also read classics through the Megareader app on my tablet which includes Project Gutenberg & other free classics. I wondered if you ever listen to audiobooks when your eyes or headaches bother you. There are some great recordings of classics available through libraries as well as through Amazon/Kindle/Audible including free ones.
