Ruthanne Johnston Hi there! I'm Ruthanne, originally from the Boston area and now living in Texas. I am a widow but engaged to a wonderful man. I am a retired nurse with one son. I love Maine Coon cats and the Boston Red Sox!
I love reading the classics that I missed or neglected growing up. I fell in lifelong love with Dickens' books in high school. Also am slowly reading all of Thomas Hardy.
Non-classic reading includes the entire Pendergast series by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston. Love mysteries, both old and new and, of course just about anything medical.
Happy to be here!

message 4302: by Brina (new)

Brina Ruthanne, welcome. Must be hard loving the Red Sox and living out of town. I hope they play the Cubs in the series this year. Your reading interests sound great for this group and I hope you enjoy it here.

Chloé (chloejoyeux) Hi! My name is Chloé, I'm 20 and I'm french. I'm not a native speaker but I started learning english very early on. I almost exclusively read in english now, because my goal is to know more about English classics, hence my presence here.
Some of my favorite books include : the Great Gatsby, Hamlet, Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides,..
I also love poetry (Hardy, Sylvia Plath, Dickinson etc).
I've just finished Murakami's Kafka on the Shore and am currently rereading Nineteen Eighty Four, because I dont think I grasped all its dimensions back when I was younger.
I'm looking forward to reading classics I havent had time to get my hands on so far, discovering classics I havent heard of, and hearing opinions about books!

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome to the group Frieda :) You have a great goal of reading one classic per month. We've read The Great Gatsby as a group before, but if you'd like to read through our discussion threads about it, or add your own thoughts, here's the link to the book https://www.goodreads.com/group/comme...

message 4313: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome Frieda. This is a great group to start reading classics. You will see your reading choices increase after being here for a few months I look forward to seeing you in the group.

Hello and welcome Frieda! Trust me, there will be many members here to have discussions with about the books that you read. Our group is quite unique because we have an array of books to read each month. You can read them all or you can pick the one or two that work for you and then you can have discussions with members. It's a fabulous group and I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here! Happy reading! :)

message 4315: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Hansen Hi everyone! My name is Jamie and I'm from Colorado (currently living in Oregon). I've been on Goodreads for a few years and have enjoyed and used it mostly as a place to keep a record of the books I'm reading and reviewing, but before today I had never joined any groups. This one looks like a lot of fun! I like a lot of genres (historical fiction, some science fiction, children's and well-done middle grade, a bit of light fantasy) but have in the last couple of years been on a huge classics kick. Our book club recently tackled War and Peace and I really enjoyed it. I read Crime and Punishment around last Halloween and LOVED it. I recently read Mansfield Park, my sixth of Jane Austen's novels and have delighted in all six. I'm an early-career psychologist but on many days contemplate a career change that would enable me to be paid to read (especially classics). What do you think? Is it a pipe dream? Any ideas?

message 4316: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome, Jamie. This is the best place to be to read and discuss classics. I am sure many of us here would love to be paid to read. Hope you enjoy it here.

Ooo--love the books you mentioned, Jamie. And I'm with you on wishing reading was a paid profession! Welcome--I think you'll have fun here.

message 4318: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Jamie, I'm glad you've been enjoying classics lately. I think we'd all happily be paid to read! Let me know if you find a position and I'll join you :)

Welcome Tanya, you're in the right place to jump back into classics, we have lots to choose from here, so hopefully you'll find something that suits you :)

message 4319: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome, Tanya. As Pink says, this is the best group to read classics and there are lots of choices each month so there should be something that you like. Looking forward to seeing you in the group :)

LiLi | 153 comments Hello, my name is Elizabeth. I'm an American (Californian) living in Belgium with my husband. We lived in England for a couple of years before moving here.

I have been reading classics for as long as I can remember. I really like the writing style of Victorian Brit Lit, so I tend to read more of that than anything. My favorite author is George Eliot. I recently discovered Thomas Hardy, who may turn out to be my second favorite.

I have _a lot_ of books, and after two international moves, I'm determined to move fewer of them next time; so I'm in the process of reading them all & selling off those I don't want to keep. The George Eliots are staying forever, though!

message 4321: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome, Elizabeth. This is the best group for discussing classics so I think that you'll fit right in. Looking forward to seeing you here.

Hi and welcome Elizabeth! I give you a lot of credit to be able sell off any books, I don't think I could ever do it, but books are hard to pack and move! The weight alone is a killer!

You'll like our group and there are many members here who enjoy Eliot and Hardy! So jump in anywhere and happy reading! :)

Good luck with your thesis! Enjoy yourself here and happy reading! :)

Brina Welcome, Rahil. You can read whichever books you want. There are also buddy reads for books that don't get voted as group reads so you should find books that you enjoy. Looking forward to having you in the group.

message 4330: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Elizabeth and Rahil, I hope you enjoy the group.

I'm a big fan of George Eliot too, well at least for Middlemarch, I wasn't so keen on Silas Marner, so I really should try something else by her.

As mentioned, there's no requirement to join in with all, or any group reads, pick what suits your interests and time requirements. Discussion threads stay open for all group reads, so you can read and comment in your own time, or see if we've already discussed your favourite books, so you can add your thoughts :)

message 4331: by Marlene (new)

Marlene Hi everyone. My name is Marlene and I have just joined the group. I live in Ocala, Florida USA and have recently retired.
I read just about anything in print, but lately have been reading mostly Classics, Fantasy, and Non-Fiction. I recently finished 'The Lord of the Rings' and loved it. Current reading includes 'The Grapes of Wrath', '13 Hours' and 'The Hunger Games'. I read both physical books and e-books. But I have strong preference for a physical book. There is just something about holding the book and actually turning the page.
I am looking forward to getting in on some of the discussion threads.

message 4332: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome, Marlene. I used to live in Orlando so I know where Ocala is. There are lots of group and buddy reads each month so there are choices that everyone likes. Looking forward to seeing you in the group :-)

Hi and welcome Marlene! Happy retirement! Ocala is a beautiful section of Florida. I'm sure it's a big change from living in Ohio but a welcomed one!

You certainly have an eclectic taste in books which will make your enjoyment here a pleasurable one! Jump in and happy reading! :)

Tonia (yestonia) | 177 comments Hi everyone.

I am from Devon in the UK. I have a very eclectic approach to most things in my life and my reading material is no different. I don't have a preferred genre, style or author so am pretty much up for trying anything!

Looking forward to checking off some of those books I should have read long ago. :)

message 4342: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Tonia, I'm sure you'll fit right in, lots of us have varied reading tastes and we like to read a range of classics here as well. I hope you enjoy the group :)

message 4343: by Tonia (new)

Tonia (yestonia) | 177 comments Thank you. I am lining up copies of the May books to make a proper start then. I have tried Moby Dick before but didn't get on with it; reading with others makes it easier sometimes though so I may just give it another go.

message 4344: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Group reading definitely helps for some books, I think a few other people have needed the encouragement for Moby Dick as well. Plus it's our quarterly read from April - June, so you can take it slower with that one if it helps.

Thank you Loretta. I have looked through the group shelves and there is a nice selection. Some classics groups are all about Shakespeare and Dickens - it's good to find somewhere that has room for all the other great writers too!
