message 351: by Christine (new)

Christine | 971 comments Hello everyone! My name is Christine. I work as a labor & delivery nurse. At home I have a husband and 3 preteen/teenage kids. I always loved to read, but I have been a sporadic reader for the last decade or so with the demands of work and family. After receiving a Kindle for Christmas this year I am finally getting back into reading regularly and I am loving it!

I like reading many different genres, but especially historical fiction, speculative fiction, and nonfiction. I am trying to work on reading more classic literature, so that's how I found this group. Looking forward to participating!

Katelyn Shaver (wayako) | 6 comments Hello~ My name is Katelyn. I work as an interpretive park ranger at a state park and hold a MA in history as well as a BA in both history and English.

I have always enjoyed stories of all types from a variety of media, with classic novels and poetry being no exception. Recently I have been trying to explore more of the classics; while engaged in this endeavor I stumbled upon this group, figured it would be a good fit, and applied. Exploring something is more fun when you have nakama/colleagues to interact and discuss with, ne?

I am looking forward to expanding my horizons, communicating with other group members and receiving suggestions for classics from both within and without my native culture. Nice to meet you all. :)

message 359: by Staci (new)

Staci Hi, I'm Staci from Texas. I found that I actually liked the books my high school teachers assigned and have been hooked on classics ever since. Due to moving between OK and TX, I never took American Lit. I have read all the works of Shakespeare, but I still haven't read "Uncle Tom's Cabin". Over 20 years ago, I noticed this problem and got a list from my teacher. I have been working through it, but it's a slow process as I get distracted by new publications. I hope this Group may help me keep on track a bit. I also want to meet people who enjoy the classics and won't think I'm too weird.

Katelyn Shaver (wayako) | 6 comments Thank you for the warm welcome. It is nice to see people from all over joining the group and diversifying our perspectives. :) Now to pass the greeting karma around and say~ hallo and welcome to Kelly and Staci! BTW, Staci, it is nice to meet a fellow Texan! (That still feels so strange for me to say since I have only been a Texan for 3 months ^_^; I still keep thinking of myself as a Virginian)

message 363: by Alan (new)

Alan | 2 comments Hey Everyone. I am Alan from Scotland. I am 16 years old and currently studying for A Level exams in English, Maths, Chemistry and Biology.

I am a big book nut and read far too much. Since I study English, Classic Literature is at the forefront of our studies, so I do love to read them especially. I also like my Young Adult fiction heavily. I am hoping to study Medicine at university if I can achieve the correct grade requirements.

Favourite Novels recently that I have read:
The Book Thief
To Kill a Mockingbird
Tristessa
The Virgin Suicides

Nice to meet you all and please feel free to add me to allow me to interact with you all. :D

Good luck on your exams!!!! And, which university? (My daughter almost went to Edinburgh (5-yr program), but ended up at UCD (4-yr program) instead (vet, tho, not med). Grad entry, rather than school leavers.

Katelyn Shaver (wayako) | 6 comments Nice to meet you Alan and good luck with your exams! Which schools are you aiming for? If you go to Edinburgh you can tell my best friend from grad school, Ioana's, husband Massimo (http://www.research.ed.ac.uk/portal/e...) hello for me! :p j/k From what I understand though, that school has a good science department. I am not sure on the medical front; but, the medical program there is likely good as well. University of Bath might be another school to check out. I took a well done MOOCs relating to cancer sponsponsoredthem recently and was impressed at the professor's astuteness and approach to teaching.

Speaking of MOOCs, you might check out Futurelearn (https://www.futurelearn.com), Coursera (https://www.coursera.org/) and Edx (https://www.edx.org/). They are free MOOC (Massive Open Online Course, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massive_...) websites which are nifty for both self learning and preparing for further schooling alike. I really wish they had had these things back when I was younger...anyways, enjoy. :)

EDIT: Ah Imperial College London, nice. I don't know much about that school, but from the website it looks like a good one.

message 367: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (mphel005) Hey Everyone! My name is Matthew, I'm 19 years old and from Florida. I am very excited to join this book club!! I always love reading books of different genres but I always love to explore the richness of beautiful classics that have survive for centuries. Since technology was slowly advancing, I feel as though one of the greatest advantages of writing was the use of imagination and creativity. I cannot wait to explore countless classics and expanding my horizons with books!

message 368: by Staci (new)

Staci Hi Katelyn! I'm glad to see another Texan too. I am native Texan with family history in the Alamo and it always hurts to see so much ignorance in my beloved homeland. You are a welcome edition!

Alan, I have never been to Scotland, but my family has always had Scottish Terriers and I have met many Scots because of my little pets. Every one was brilliant and kind.

MK, I will try to type up my list and post them. One is a basic American Lit list, but the other is a list of books every college educated person should know...or so it claims. ;)

Very cool! Thx, Staci :). I think you meant to direct that to Kathy (not sure), but, either way, I'll certainly enjoy the resource too! Also, welcome!! (Did I say welcome? :D )

And welcome to Matthew :). Hello!

Imperial College London, nice, Alan! I'd imagine London would be a fabulous city to be a student in!

Welcome Alan & Matthew! We are always glad to have more book lovers here with the group.

Katelyn, I love free online courses. Working on a couple of them through Coursera right now. And always have several more on my watchlists. Lots of fun and only as much stress as you put on yourself.

message 371: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin Lillie (kiwibookworm) | 4 comments Hello! I'm Caitlin, a NZ student living in France. I found this group when I was looking at one of my favourite books, I can't remember which one it was. As well as classics, I love mysteries, fantasies, dystopians, and the occasional chick-lit. My favourite classics are Les Miserables and Pride and Prejudice.
Speaking of Jane Austen, did anybody else get fooled by the Mirth and Mischief thing?

message 372: by Bianca (new)

Bianca (chaoslovesorder) Hello! I am Bianca and I'm new to the group, I'm so happy that there is a group that is encouraging the reading of classics! I would love to read them all and have. People to talk about them with is just the icing on the cake.

I'm 20 and I'm from Sydney Australia, I'm a university student studying to become a high school teacher in the field of History and English. (Can't wait to graduate!)

My reading interests vary so much- one day I might read a YA book, the next a nonfiction book. I just honestly love to read.

The classics appeal to me because a lot of them are reflections of everyday lives in the times thy were written and yet they make it feel magical and an adventure. The classics feel like they being my love of History together with my love of reading and give me this wonderful tale.

Thank you for letting me join!

Hello and welcome, to Caitlin and Bianca :)

message 374: by Amy (new)

Amy I joined this group simply because I've been more in a mood lately for doing exactly what the name of this group suggests: catching up with the classics. I actually taught American literature to ESL students for several years, but I always felt lacking in a deeper knowledge of classic literature beyond the surface level of the authors and stories I taught over and over.

I currently moderate a Time Travel book club here on GoodReads and belong to an in-person non-fiction science book club. So, as you can guess, quite a lot of my reading is science fiction and science non-fiction. But I recently fell in love with Thomas Hardy and am challenging myself to read through his works chronologically in the next couple of years. I also want to work on understanding Russian history a little better through a chronological reading of some Russian classics. So that's where this book club may come in handy if my reading coincides a bit. Although, I have a feeling it's going to expand my to-be-read list in far more directions than I intended.

I really have far too little time to meet all my reading goals as quickly as I'd like since I have busy 3-year-old. I really only have 1 or 2 hours a night to read to myself. But read I must. And read I shall.

message 375: by Gene (new)

Gene | 3 comments I recently started a personal project to read all of those books that I was assigned as a student, but never bothered with. Since it seems to be in line with this group, I figured I would check it out. So far, I've finished Ivanhoe, Return of the Native, and Jane Eyre.

message 376: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments LOL that's awesome, Gene. Welcome :)
I think I should pretty much just reread all the ones that were assigned to me as a student, b/c somehow those class assigned books managed to strangle the stories and make them all (needlessly) unpleasant. I'm enjoying them so much more now, reading them on my own, then I ever did when there were analyzed and picked to death, in a class-room of glassy-eyed-bored-to-death teenagers! :p

And hello and welcome to Amy (nice to 'see' you here!), too :).

Amy (ldtchr) | 7 comments Greetings! I'm Amy and am in Grand Rapids, MI. I love to read most anything and since I tend to read now for pleasure, I stick with fiction for the most part. I haven't read much in the way of classics since college or when I taught high school/junior high English. I find I appreciate them much more when there is some form of discussion attached so I am looking forward to getting through some I'd had holding down my shelves!

Todd Hello All,

I'm Todd. I am 35 and living in a big old house in Pittsburgh that I am slowly filling with books. I have a BA in Literature and a Master's in Higher and Post-Secondary Education. Starting last November I began reading all of the "must read before death" books I've had on my shelves. So far I have managed Anna Karenina, Middlemarch, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Madame Bovary, Return of the Native and hope to begin The Brothers Karamazov soon.

I look forward to spirited conversation with all of you!

Cheers!!

Kris Weafer I'm Kristi, a senior in my undergraduate career as an English major. I'm trying to gear up towards reading for pleasure again after I graduate in a month, and a guided group seemed like a pretty good way not to be overwhelmed immediately and give up.

message 395: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn Davis | 3 comments Hi, everyone. I'm Jocelyn from Santa Fe, New Mexico. I spent 23 years in the learning and development industry and recently left to form my own leadership development firm. We teach leadership through the lens of classic books. I was a philosophy major, English minor in college, so I'm now combining several of my passions and am excited to have found this group.

I love just about all classic novels (especially British ones) as well as philosophy, essays, short stories, and memoirs. My guilty pleasures are fantasy (Tolkien, George R.R. Martin) and murder mysteries (Agatha Christie). My 17-year-old daughter loves the classics, too; I am trying to get her to join this group! Looking forward to reading and talking.

Welcome Katrina & anyone else that I haven't welcomed yet. I've gotten a bit behind in my welcoming new members as I've been traveling with limited internet time. (Sneaking in a bit tonight at the hotel)

So fun to see so many new bibliophiles joining the group. I look forward to all the new faces in our discussions.

Nominations are still open for June reads, let us know what you would like to read.

message 399: by Polly (new)

Polly | 7 comments Hi, I'm Portia. If I was to describe myself in one word, bookworm would tell you all you need to know. I love reading all books, but especially classics. I live in China, and not many people in my country read classics so I was really excited when I found this group.

message 400: by Edīte (new)

Edīte | 0 comments Hello, I`m Edīte, I live in Latvia. I enjoy cooking, traveling and of course reading. Every new book is an adventure what I take to explore the world around me, also needed escape from everyday life. If a book makes me think, then it is a good book by my standards. After I read Dracula (way before Edward Cullen cult), I wanted to be a vampire so badly that I could have all the time in the world to read books (giggles). I look forward to reading and discussing books what have been on my to-read list for a while.
