message 3857: by Miriam (last edited Jan 07, 2017 01:52AM) (new)

Miriam Hi everyone!

I'm Miriam from Freiburg (Germany). I studied English and history to become a teacher, but ended up in a software company instead. However, I still love reading and try to do so as often as possible, mostly on the train. I especially like non-fiction books about world history, science, and psychology as well as fiction (dystopias, classics).

I'm looking forward to your inspirations!

Piyumi Happy New Year everyone :)
I am Piyumi. I'm back in Sri Lanka after completing my PhD in Media and Cultural Studies in Scotland. Currently job hunting while settling back in my home land. I'm a half baked student of Literature, so have read the classics as part of my studies, but am a full time lover of the Classics and an avid reader.
Looking forward to chatting with all on common and new books.

Hi and welcome Whitney! So happy to meet another Wuthering Heights fan! I just read The Picture of Dorian Gray this year and thought it was really good. Also loved The Call of the Wild and what's not to like about Little Women?

Glad you found our group! Enjoy yourself and happy reading! :)

message 3868: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Top of the morning everyone! I live in the outskirts of Chicago with my recently retired hubby and one small dog. I've always been an avid reader and like most of you consider myself a full fledged bookaholic. I've worked in libraries in some capacity or another for many years, but like my husband, am now retired.
I'm excited to join this group and read some classics, a resolution I make every year but rarely follow through with!

Hi Tracy! So happy you joined us! I also started out the same way you did, making a vow to read more classics each year. Guess what? Joining this group inspired me in so many ways and last year I pretty much read nothing but classics! I'm sure you'll do well here and you'll enjoy yourself too! Happy reading! :)

message 3875: by Max (new)

Max | 5 comments Happy late New Year, all! My name is Max and I'm a 21 year old English/Statistics major. The classics have predominantly been my choice for reading material. You can always be sure that there's something in a classic novel that makes it, well, a classic; over-arching philosophies on the nature of the most basic and abstract aspects of life with amazing prose. My favorite area of classic literature is definitely 19th century Russian lit. I'm currently reading through Anna Karenina and I definitely look forward to reading this group's discussions and recommendations.

Thanks Loretta and everyone for the warm welcome. I am hoping to branch out this year and read some of the more adult classics. Looks like this is a great place to get ideas.

Hello, I'm Jeremy Wright. I live in Switzerland and aside from reading I also enjoy hiking in Summer and ski touring in Winter and writing sometimes.
I'm aiming to read thirty books this year and to read them more actively. To think and to discuss. This group must be the solution.
Happy reading all!

Lotte | 189 comments Hi, I'm a 20-something Belgian girl and a privacy freak (hence my user name, Sanvean, which is actual the title of my all-time favourite song by Dead Can Dance).

One of my reading goals is reading the books on the World Library list (https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/9...) and reading the books that are left of my shelves.

I have joined this group to discuss some of the classics I'm reading of have read.

message 3894: by Emily (new)

Emily D. | 145 comments Hello! I'm currently on a major classics-reading streak and joined this group so I can get ideas for classics to add to my reading, as well as to join the discussions and see other readers' comments on the classics. Too often, I only get my own perspective or maybe a little scholarly guidance from a Foreword or essay in the beginning of the book, but I feel like I miss out on some of the meanings or ideas authors are describing, and I want to get the most out of these masterpieces.
