Messier110 | 1 comments Hi All, I'm Jason from Tampa. I've been a member of GR for about a year and a half, and I continue to find my way through the groups as my tastes evolve. I've been going at a bunch of Stephen King novels, read all the SK "classics", I'm not sure if that's a bad word around here, but I'm ready to do some real classics. Right now I have War and Peace and Great Expectations on my to read, and I'm happy I found this group.

Out of copyright classics, which makes them in the public domain and free! Yep there's plenty to choose from on kindle. Judging from your other posts it looks like you've found them. Generally, if the books about 100 years old or more, there's a good chance you can pick up a free copy.

message 3831: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Jason, Lisamarie and Tasmin, I'm glad to see so many new members for the new year!

Jason, I think some of SK's books could be classed as modern classics, at least of the horror genre. I just finished War and Peace, it was totally worth the wait and not as daunting as the size had led me to believe!

Lisamarie, I hope you find some time for classics now that life is sounding a little calmer! Happy new year :)

Tasmin, Pride and Prejudice is a great book, though it's not my personal favourite Austen (that prize goes to Persuasion!) Anyway, I hope we inspire you to try some more classics, when you find time around your studies :)

message 3832: by Synthwaver (new)

Synthwaver | 16 comments Hi and happy new year. I'm 25 and soon will finish my Master's in English Literature. I fall into the group of "read so much literary criticism, now is catching up on classic works of literature."

I have just started to get active and I'm new to Goodreads groups. Already on a project of reading Classics individually, I joined the group to hopefully participate in monthly reads and read together with other people.

While I like pretty much any genres, thought-provoking books are fascinating to me and there is an abundance of them among classics.

Looking forward to read and discuss books with others! :)

message 3834: by Ana (new)

Ana (4nn4) Hi, everyone! I'm Ana. I live in Zagreb, Croatia. I'm married and currently pregnant. My due date is in 8 days so I hope that most of my readings will be read aloud to my baby boy. I joined this group because I like the idea of catching up on classics.

I first fell in love with books while reading the Harry Potter series, I was about 10 years old. Also, I read Harry Potter in English instead of Croatian and that helped me a lot with the language.
Later I read almost anything that I could get a hold of.
Currently, I'm totally in love with the Russian authors. And Anna Karenina is on top of my to-read list (I started reading it about 10 years ago for school, I read half of it, the book was very interesting but I never had the time to finish it, so these days I'll be starting over).
The best gift I ever received was my Kindle, 4 years ago for my birthday. I absolutely love it. I have so many books on it and I always have it with me, so I read every free second I get, like waiting in line at the bank or while on a bus drive.

I looked to the topics of this group, they are really great. I love them, but there are also so many that it seems a bit overwhelming. I hope I can find my space to participate somewhere.

I'm very deeply inlove with classics and poetry. so that's why i decided to join this group, and i saw alot of topics down here.

message 3836: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome Ana and Bryan. Glad you both joined to further your love of classics here. There are lots of choices so you should both find books you enjoy. Looking forward to seeing you in the group.

message 3838: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Ana, wow due in 8 days, what an exciting time! I recently read War and Peace and loved it, so I plan on reading Anna Karenina this year too. You're right that we have a lot going on in this group, don't worry too much about everything, just pick and choose what works for you while you're learning your way around. There's no need to participate in everything :)

Welcome Bryan, I used to love reading Green Eggs and Ham to my children when they were younger! You're in the right place if you love classics and poetry. Hopefully you can join us for some group reads and discussions :)

Hi and welcome Ana! A little baby boy! How wonderful and he's already a reader thanks to you!

That was my first experience with Anna Karenina also. I started it, put it down and started it again. Excellent read!

Our group is very laid back, which is good because you have the opportunity to participate in all the group reads each month, or just pick and choose the books you'd like to read. Group discussions are basically the same way, even if you'd read a book years ago you can still join in the discussions! So jump in, anywhere and enjoy yourself! Happy reading! :)
