Sarah (outtaty) | 9 comments I've been lurking around, but have never officially introduced myself. My name is Sarah. I'm 36, married, and a mom of 1. I work part time as a nurse and I homeschool my daughter. For fun I ballroom dance and read!
Despite my age, I haven't read many classics because my brain equals classic with school. I'm trying to get over that because I need to vary my reading a bit. I'm glad to be here!

Welcome Sarah, nothing wrong with lurking, but I truly think it is much more fun to actively participate in the book discussions. I'm glad you are here too.

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome to the group Sarah, I'm glad you decided to introduce yourself. There's lots of us here that were put off reading classics at school, but we're making up for it now :)

Kirsty-Ann Potter | 4 comments Hello, I'm Kirsty.

I live in the East Midlands and live in a madhouse of pets, which is ever growing.
Current pet total: 14
I draw in my free time as well as practising Archery.

I enjoy reading fantasy novels but thought I ought to broaden my horizons. I have dabbled in classics before when I was younger (currently 23) but I think I was too young to understand them then so I figured I'd give them another shot. I'm new to GoodReads so I'll see where it takes me. :)

have you ever read My Family and Other Animals? - very much recommended, especially if you are pet-mad!

message 3308: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome to the group Kirsty :)

My house feels pet crazy with 4 cats, so you've got an extra 10 animals on me!

I'm glad you've decided to give classics another try. I didn't get back into reading them until a few years ago and now they're my favourite sort of book to read.

I hope you find something that you enjoy and look forward to chatting more with you soon! :)

I just watched the 2005 BBC version of that on DVD and loved it! Also, the new updated version will air on PBS on October 16th (The Durrells of Corfu). I'm looking forward to it. I think reading George Durrell's books about his family and pets would be fun. He was an interesting man!

I second (third?) this recommendation! Gerald Durrell's books are great fun, especially for animal lovers, I grew up on them as he's a bit of a local hero,

I'd also recommend James Herriot, who wrote some wonderful books about his time as a Yorkshire vet :)

I enjoy reading eclectically. My favorite genre is Historical Fiction and lately I've been really obsessed with Classics. I'm currently reading Jane Eyre. My hobbies include reading, genealogy, and crochet although lately I've been forgoing crocheting for reading or researching :) I'm looking forward to being a part of the group, getting to know other members, and reading more Classics!

Brina Welcome Jamie. Glad you joined. I home schooled for a year and it wasn't for me but I give major kudos to anyone who is able to do it. Hope you are able to take time for yourself by reading classics in this group. Enjoy.

Kristin Selnes | 31 comments I started a new goal yesterday. To read a book by all Nobel prize winners. Printed a list of all of them and it was surprisingly few I had already read (and surprisingly many I had not heard about). I guess this would qualify as "catching up on classics".

Hi Jamie welcome to the group. I'm reading Jane Eyre at the moment as well. Its a reread for me and I'm about 100 pages in and enjoying it even more than I did last time. How are you liking it?

Thank you! It was rough the past few years but recently my youngest is very independent and just wants her daily list of things to do on her own and my oldest just signed up for cyber school so that takes a lot of pressure off me and frees up time.

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Jaime, glad to have you here and I hope you'll find time to join us with some classics :)

Kristin, I think reading any books by Nobel laureates classifies as catching up on classics. The literature prize for 2016 should be awarded this week. I've actually been reading a few articles about the people who missed out and why that might have been, it's quite interesting to know why they were shunned!

I think the date for the the litterature prize has not been set yet. I have googled for some days now. I also try to follow up on the Man Booker Prize (which will be awarded on October 25). Sometimes the person receiving the Booker prize will receive the litterature prize (Coetzee for example) and I'm so pleased when the litterature prize is awarded that I have already read a book by the author. Sometimes I have not even heard of him/her.
As regards your second comment, I absolutely agree. I also read recently why Solzhenitzyn declined. Quite heartbreaking story.

message 3336: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments No the date is not set yet, but it comes after the other science prizes, which have been awarded this week, so I'm expecting an announcement any day now. I'm interested to see who gets the Peace prize this year as well.

I take notice of the Booker Prize too, although I'm not that interested in any of the shortlist this year.

Peace prize will be announced Friday. Living in Oslo, I am of course interested. It is the one day each year where Oslo is the center of attention.

Thanks Pink. A very amusing article. Some of the comments were right to the point. Took me a few moments to get the irony, but after that it was hilarious.
Let's revisit this discussion after the prize is announced.

message 3348: by Shanice (new)

Shanice (cinnamonreads) Hello!! My name is Shanice and I'm from Scotland - I've recently started getting back into reading books a few months ago and started with reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier which has re-ignited my love for classics (seriously though, SUCH a good book!!). 1984 by George Orwell was the very first classic I read back in High School and although it was for writing an essay, it's what begun my love for classics!

I LOVE reading although I haven't always had time for it - being at University studying Psychology then into a Masters doing Psychology of Mental Health left little time for the books I love and lots more time spent on text books and journal articles!! Straight into a job from there where I work in Suicide Prevention, the majority of my time was spent immersed in work and again left little time for the things I love!!

Now I've simply made sure I give myself the time to read, i have now taken up cross-stitching and my dog that was adopted 4 months ago definitely tops the list!! I'm so excited to start getting back into the classics (I'm currently counting down the days to pay day so I can treat myself to the collection of Jane Austen novels, eep!!!) and feel like this is a brilliant place to do so!

Hi and welcome Shanice! Excellent book to start your journey back into reading classics! Rebecca is a great book! 1984 is a book I read again this year and liked it so much better the second time around!

Your schedule sounds pretty hectic but it's always nice to wind down your day with your puppy and a good book!

I'm sure you'll find this group and its members enjoyable! Happy reading! :)
