Thanks to everyone to make this a fun and friendly classic book reading group.

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Lauren, congrats on graduating! I look forward to chatting with you more soon and discussing some classics. There's plenty of choice here, to join in with group reads or buddy reads each month, or even a challenge or two if you enjoy them. If you have any questions just ask :)

That's exciting news for our group Kathy! :)

Brina Yes very exciting news!! And what a nice group of people! The well read ones have been helpful in recommending books for challenges and offering advice in discussions. And have encouraged me to read more classics. So glad I joined here.

Hello everyone. I have always loved to read and I've already read some classics and want to read more. As for genres I like, I'll try almost anything at least once, but I'll usually skip over romances.

Other hobbies are cross stitching, quilting, jigsaw puzzles and occasionally making doll clothes.

Classics I've read:

Fahrenheit 451
Up from Slavery
Treasure Island
Island of the blue dolphins
The Scarlet Letter
The Count of Monte Cristo
Frankenstein
Dracula
White Fang
Call of the Wild
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
The Autobiography of Malcolm X
Dune
The Godfather
Uncle Tom's Cabin
The Color Purple
The Good Earth
The Pearl
Little Women
The Phantom of the Opera
Hamlet
Redwall
The Art of War
Tarzan of the Apes
The Handmaid's Tale
Around the World in 80 Days
Robinson Crusoe
The Diary of a Young Girl
The Scarlet Pimpernel
Where the Red Fern Grows
Brave New World
The Tempest
The War of the Worlds
The Giver
The Prince
Animal Farm
A Christmas Carol
The Old Man and the Sea
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Rip Van Winkle
Medea
Common Sense
Oedipus the King

Hi and welcome Kim! This is definitely the place to read more classics, although the list of books you've read already is pretty impressive! I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here! Happy reading! :)

message 2859: by MKay (new)

MKay | 277 comments Welcome Kim. We enjoy some of the same things in cross stitch, and doll clothes making. I have a just turned 6 year old granddaughter who is very much into making clothes for her dolls. I just finished an 18 inch plastic canvas doll and a couple outfits for her. Hope you enjoy our group!

message 2860: by Evan (last edited Jul 18, 2016 04:43PM) (new)

Evan Hi,
I'm partly here through desperation. OK, it's not that bad, but I realized that I was becoming so annoyed by the juvenile junk the "friends" on my friends list are reading that I wanted to find a venue where I could bolster my friends' list with people who have more serious reading tastes.

I invite you to read my profile and look at my book selection and welcome friend invites from serious readers.

I enjoy history and serious adult literature. I live an eclectic life and have very diverse reading and artistic tastes. I'll leave my profile to provide the rest...

I need balance restored to my friends' list! I would like to see some people with adult reading tastes on my daily feeds and not just people reading juvenilia.

C'mon, it's getting ridiculous!

Thanks for accepting me into the group. -EG

message 2861: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome Evan. I understand when I see people on my feed reading "juvenile" books. It's ok to read contemporary literature and an occasional mystery/thriller, but not all the time. Since joining this group, I have read more classics and branched out in my reading. I hope you are able to as well. Enjoy reading the books in this group.

Hi Evan! Glad you've joined our group to read the classics! I'm sure you'll find friends here who are also serious readers, myself included! Can't wait to see your thoughts on the threads!! Enjoy and happy reading!!

message 2863: by Evan (last edited Jul 18, 2016 08:45PM) (new)

Evan I actually never participate in group discussions, even though I belong to several groups. I just have too many other things going on, but I do like to gain friends on my page with the like-minded, or those with close to like-minded interests and/or reads.

I do balance my reading with books from different periods and genres. For instance, right now I am about to finish one very long classic, Fielding's ...Tom Jones and have started a very long contemporary classic, Wallace'e Infinite Jest. And I usually have a wide variety of other concurrent reads going.

message 2865: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (vinjii) Hello everyone, I'm Olivia :) I like to read fantasy and YA and sci-fi. But I have also a love for the classics. I grew up in a household where the shelves were filled with classics and read a lot of difficult books at a young age. I'm pretty sure some I didn't fully understand back then and would like to delve right back in and discover new ones and re-discover the ones I've already read. I'm 32, I live in the south of England, but originally I'm from Switzerland, so German is my first language. I have 2 dogs and also train dogs and in my free time I read, write and cook. Looking forward to joining the discussions :)

message 2866: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome Olivia. This is the right group to join if you are looking to reread classics. I have definitely read more classics since joining this group and hopefully you also will. Looking forward to seeing you in the group discussions, enjoy.

Hi and welcome Olivia! I also grew up in a house that had many classical books on the shelves but sadly, I didn't really want to read them growing up so here I am now with Catching up on Classics doing just that! I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here! Happy reading!

Dare I ask, which of our challenges it is you're looking forward to. We have quite a few! Though as we're halfway through the year already you can shorten them to suit your personal needs.

message 2882: by Melinda (new)

Melinda I had no idea there were so many - Bingo is the one that caught my eye first.

message 2883: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Haha, that's why I was afraid to ask! We have a lot going on, but there's no pressure to join any of the challenges. I love bingo as it's fun to see which books can be slotted into different squares. Some of them prove much easier than others!

message 2900: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Toth | 6 comments Hi everyone! I need help finding the author/title of a book. I am dating myself, but I graduated H.S. in 1994. I was in Honors English all 4 years, and I remember that my H.S. teacher had me read a book that I think/feel was British Lit, or at least American Classic. I wanna say it was in line with C.S. Lewis, Sinclair Lewis, that style of writing... it was a very thick book.. and I want to say it had something to do with "wheel of fortune" - NOT the game show. It had a similar vibe of Main Street or The Lottery... I know I'm not losing my mind...but my H.S. teacher isn't on FB, and I've run out of people who might know... I'll never sleep again until I figure this out. HELP please?
