Welcome to the group, Renee.

You are correct (and Warner too) that any book on our shelf can be nominated for the Revisit the Shelf category.

The Quarterly Reads are nominated two months in advance for the quarter; so August for the 4th Quarter (Oct, Nov, Dec read). Only the past Long Read Books listed below are not eligible, and the books must be at least 600 pages in length, and a classic of course.

Brina Welcome Amy. I also live in Ohio. I joined this group to read more classics because I generally also read contemporary, mystery, and middle grade fiction with my kids. I hope you read more classics now that you've joined here. Looking forward to seeing you in discussions.

Alessandra Medina (alessame) | 2 comments Hello everyone! I'm Alessandra, I'm 21 years old and I'm from Brazil. So, this is the reason why my English may not be so good.
Unfortunately, I grew up in a city that the schools don't help students to read classics. Even brazilian classics. So, I decided to start a journey to read classics and others kind of books.
I like fiction, fantasy and romance's books, but I'm open for all kind of reading.
Oh, this is my first time here in Goodreads. I'm so
excited! Yay!
So, this is it. Bye bye guys!

Welcome! I didn't get many classics in school either and feel I need to get some read. Have read many since joining in January.

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Leah, haha, introductions can be strange can't they. We're glad to have you here, whether you're new to classics or if they're your favourite type of book. I hope you find something you enjoy.

Hi Alessandra, welcome to the group! How great that you've decided to take your own classics journey. I hope you like the group and Goodreads. It's a great place to discover new books and focus on your personal reading.

Welcome to Leah and Alessandra.
Alessandra, I am trying to read more from international authors. I am pretty well versed in English and American ones. I will love having your opinion on what to read as we go along.

message 2815: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulacruzp) Hiii. I'm Paula. Been here in the group for about a week but only got around to introducing myself now, haha. I'm also Brazilian. Definitely feel what Alessandra said, books aren't really addressed properly in schools here in general. But I go to a bilingual place, so in English class we do dissect novels and it's beautiful. Over the past school year, we read In Cold Blood, Brave New World, Huck Finn, and Julius Caesar, all of which are established classics and all of which I really really enjoyed. So, lately, I've been fostering this growing appreciation of the "originals." Recently borrowed Gatsby and Dubliners from my grandfather. But my feed here tends to revolve around YA and fantasy, so I thought I'd join the group and see what classic-readers are up to. :)

message 2825: by Sara (new)

Sara | 0 comments Hello!!

I'm Sara from Orlando, Florida:) A couple years ago, I set a goal for myself to read as many of the Classics as I could. I've always loved reading, but I usually kept the reading very light (romance and young adult).

At some point, it suddenly hit me that I was in my 30's, claimed to be a "reader," but I spent all of my time reading "fluff" (which is fine!)

However, for me, I have a deep desire to always keep learning and growing. And so I started reading Classics. I started with To Kill a Mockingbird (yes, sadly I never read this one while in school). After that first book, which I loved, I knew that I had to keep going. I've made some progress, but I'm hoping this group will help me continue working on this goal:)

message 2826: by Brina (new)

Brina Sara, welcome. I lived in Orlando for a few years and two of my kids are native Floridians. This group has definitely encouraged me to read more classics which I also hadn't read since school. This is a fun group and between the group reads and buddy reads you should find some books that you enjoy. Looking forward to seeing you in the discussions.

Hello and welcome Sara! My story is quite similar to yours. I liked reading mysteries (still do, on occasion!) but I kept hearing about different classical books that I also never read in high school so I set out to read them and read them I am! You'll find this group very helpful because the members really motivate you to read books you'd never think you'd read! So enjoy yourself and happy reading! :)

message 2829: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) Hi Sara, Welcome to the group. I have found that Goodreads in general has helped me to branch out in the kind of reading that I do. I used to just read novels, but now I read other genres of fiction and some nonfiction as well based on other readers recommendations. This group in particular is very inspiring for reading classics.

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Hi Sara,

I'm looking forward to reading with you.

Since I've joined this group, I've greatly increased my reading of classic titles, but I still read "lighter" or "fluff" titles to.

I like to read during my bus commute and sometimes some classic titles require a level of concentration that I can't achieve on a bus with crying babies and people jabbering loudly on their phones!

message 2831: by Phyllis (new)

Phyllis I got hooked on classics way back when I was in school. I loved A Tale Of Two Cities and the Count of Monte Cristo. I've read all sorts of books over the years but lately have gone back to the classics. Just finished Of Human Bondage. I enjoy these posts and seeing what others are reading.

Welcome Linda! I just joined last week so I'm new here also, and this seems like such a great group of people! I know what you mean about finding new books on the shelf. Since joining the gropup I have added a few to my TBR list (off the shelf or that have been nominated) that I have never heard of before. Mainly new classics and short stories and I look forward to reading some of them.

We're still choosing our reads for September so if you want to look at the nominations or nominate a book please check out the threads under Current Nominations.

Lauren Taylor (luarentaylor) Hi everyone! I'm Lauren from Los Angeles. I'm a month and a half shy from graduating with my Bachelor's in Media Communications. I adore reading and writing. I took AP Lit in high school and read a lot of classics in a very short amount of time, but did not get to enjoy them as much as I would have liked to. My mother has an amazing personal library and owns just about every one I can think of. This summer I actually decided to reread as many classics as possible, and then I found this group! It's my first group so I'm excited to learn how it all works and join everyone on the same journey!
