Rachel Hello my name is Rachel. I am a junior in highschool and first got into the depth of classics my 8th grade year when I read Les Miserables by Victor Hugo and Sherlocke Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Great reads overall. Since then I have read To Kill a Mockingbird, Charles Dickens ( A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist and Tale of Two Cities) I am hoping to get involved in more literature that can expand my vocabulary and grow me into a more linguistic individual. Also I plan to go into Physical Therapy so my goal is to read Greys Anatomy however if anyone has suggestions on classics that discuss the functionality of the body let me know! Thanks and Best to your reading perusal. -Rachel

Hi all! My name is Wendy. I'm currently living in TX temporarily and couldn't find a book group in my area, so I decided to look for one online. A few months ago I developed a sudden urge to read some of the classics, so I read through Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy, The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins, and Middlemarch by George Eliot. I loved every one of them! So, I joined this group because I want to read more of those books and I think it would nice to be able to share the experience with other readers.

I'll read just about anything, but I'm especially fond of literary fiction, science fiction, fantasy, history, and classics of course. Oh, and when I'm not reading I like to knit, draw, think about writing, and hang out with my daughter and husband.

I only wish I'd found this group earlier because I think we were reading Middlemarch at the same time. I would've loved to have joined in on the discussion.

Thank you so much everyone for the friendly welcomes! I'm going to look at those other discussions, and I'm going to start reading The Master and Margarita as well. That one's been sitting unread on my shelf for some time.

message 2581: by Judy (last edited May 25, 2016 07:27AM) (new)

Judy | 32 comments Hi, my name is Judy and I've joined the group to help with what I'm calling my "remedial Classics reading." There are a lot of classics I never read; in fact I'm usually embarrassed to take those "how many of these books have you read" quizzes. I want to fix that. My goal is 12 classics this year, and so far I'm on track.

The most important thing I'm learning in my quest is that I think I read many classics way too young and should probably re-read some of them.

Actually I joined about the start of the year, but don't remember if I introduced myself then. So this is hello! I'm looking forward to some of the group reads.

message 2582: by Darren (new)

Darren (dazburns) | 2169 comments Welcome Judy! :o)
which Classic will you be reading next..?

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Judy,

Your comment that you may have read some classic when you were too young really resonates with me.

Since I've joined this group I've reread a couple of titles that I "read" while a teen in high school or as a young adult in my 20s.

I realize now after reading with older eyes, that I really didn't know what was going on in some of these books though I had a desire to read them and did read them!

Hi Judy and welcome! Glad you've finally introduced yourself!

This is definetily the place to "catch up" or "re-read" classics! It's excellent that you set a goal and are on track!

I'm looking forward to your thoughts and reviews on the books that you read,

Happy reading!

message 2585: by Brina (new)

Brina Hi Judy. Glad you finally introduced yourself. To pretty much repeat what Andrea said, I am also rereading a lot of school books this year and it is amazing how the same books look completely different through adult eyes. I am also attempting to read 10-12 classics this year so we are in the same boat. Looking forward to discussing books with you.

message 2586: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Hi Judy, thanks for taking the time to introduce yourself. I think lots of us missed out on classics, or maybe got put off them in school. I didn't really return to classics until I was in my thirties and now they're the majority of what I read. Twelve books sounds like a great goal for this year and I'm glad you're looking forward to some of the group reads :)

Judy, I feel the same. In school, we only read a very few classics and studied them in depth. Then my teacher gave us a list of the books you should read before college-WHAT! lol
I agree with some of the rereads I have more understanding, or maybe a different understanding. And this group has introduced me to books I hadn't even heard of previously.
Hope you enjoy reading with us.

I might join the group for Master and Margarita (never heard of it, so how can it be a classic? right?). I asked my Facebook friends for recommendations and have a short list shelf for the ones that appealed to me: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Of these, I think Angle of Repose will be next.

ETA: Oh! I just discovered the Personal Challenge discussion topic. I definitely need to start a thread there.

Mina Behring | 1 comments Hello everyone! I'm Mina and I'm trying to read more classics!
I'm from England, grew up in Bath, and will graduate from high school in a few weeks. After I'm done with school, I'm going to travel around Europe for a while (so excited!) and I'd like to use that time to read- a lot. Especially British classics. Because my mother is German and wanted me to become proficient in German, I read a lot of German classics as a child, but neglected the British ones a little. Since I am going to study in England (London! Another thing to be excited about!) and will probably continue to live there, I'd like to catch up and finally read the works of Dickens, the Bronte sisters, and all those other English-speaking authors that I somehow missed out on. I'm going to start with To Kill a Mockingbird, even though I'll have to read fast to finish it before June...*lol*
