Welcome Caroline! Glad to have your here. You can comment and discuss any book on our shelf. We leave all of our threads open. We have a couple days left on our nominations for May 2014 reads. Let us know what you want to read.

Thanks for the explanation. It looked like something like that in the Google Maps. I am kinda surprised that they have built a town just there but maybe it has been there for ages...

Ash (bundleofmaybes) | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Ash and I'm 12 years old (I lied about my age when I signed up to Goodreads...). I read a strange mix of YA, adult and classic fiction and want to find people to chat about classics with. My favourite classic is Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (published in 1932) and I think that will be true for a long time!

message 204: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hi Ash :). I agree, that was a great read, that book! I just read it myself for the first time just a few months ago. I look forward to reading your contributions!

Hi
I'm Julakay . I like many types of books. Probably my favorite classic writers currently would be Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins . I haven't read nearly all their books but have liked the ones I have read.
I am currently TRYING to listen to an audiobook of The Diary of a Nobody ,but not having much luck ,since I listen to it before bed and have fallen asleep partway through the first few pages . I think I'll just give up and read it myself . It's a very cute story and funny in parts. It reminds me a bit of Augustus Carp, Esq. By Himself Being The Autobiography Of A Really Good Man, if any of you have read that .
Anyhow, thank you for the welcome letter . I hope to participate and read some of the group books with you guys soon :)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Hi julakay! Nice to 'meet' you. That looks like a cute book~.

I have trouble just listening to audiobooks, I often drift, or fall asleep. I have to SEE, not just HEAR. (I guess I'm not an 'auditory learner' :p) But, as long as I can read along with my eyes from time to time, sometimes I can listen and enjoy a book that way. Some of the narrators are SO GOOD. Audiobooks are a new thing for me. I listened to my first one after joining this group (Frankenstein, it was), it helped me focus, to hear and read at the same time.

Welcome Ash & Julakay. Nice to have more readers here. Ash I do hope that your parents are okay with you joining GoodReads.

message 208: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi MK
Thanks ,and yes, I understand about the audiobooks. I'd do better if I were listening in my car or cooking supper or something . At bedtime, it's like someone is reading me a bedtime story. Next thing I know, I'm sound asleep !

Thanks for the welcome , Kathy !

message 209: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Yes, exactly, on the bedtime story quality of audio book listening at night! Zzzzzzz right to sleep :-p

message 210: by Amy (new)

Amy | 1 comments Hi everyone, I'm Amy from Seattle. I have very eclectic taste in books but try to read 5 or 6 classics every year. Seems like I missed a lot during my high school and college years! So I'm making up for lost time and have fallen in love with Dickens, Cather, Hardy, Hugo, Tolstoy, and many others in the last 10 years. I'm looking forward to hearing about other readers' discoveries and to many lively discussions!

Alissa Patrick (apatrick12211) Hello! My name is Alissa and I live in Buffalo, NY with my husband of 3 years and my beautiful daughter Amelia, who is now 8 months old. She keeps me VERY busy haha, but is finally able to let mommy get back into reading.

I LOVE to read and was sad that I barely had time for it when I brought Amelia home. Now, i try to have "Me" time whenever I can, and in addition to print books, I read from my Nook Color and also listen to audiobooks while at work.

I have a list of classics that I have either never read, or feel like I need to re-read again bc I may appreciate them more as an adult. Looking forward to participating and rediscovering the classics!

message 217: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tweezle) | 6 comments Hi Everyone! I'm Theresa. I am your typical middle-aged frumpy housewife (grin) who is blessed to live near one of the top 50 universities in the world. I volunteer with Global Connections and work with foreign students and help with activities.

I never appreciated having to read the classics in high school or college and will admit to doing whatever it took to avoid reading them. Now, I am enjoying them and am looking forward to meeting others that enjoy them as well.

message 218: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (yasmininmorocco) | 2 comments Hi, my name is Carrie and I'm currently a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Kingdom of Morocco. It's a beautiful country and I feel so lucky to be here. One of the side benefits of Peace Corps, for most volunteers at least, is a lot of free time. Yes, we have projects, classes, and friends, but we also have a lot of unstructured time to fill. Enter reading the classics that I've always meant to read and that I know I won't have time to read when I return to the US and have a job that requires all my time. Thanks for letting me join your group!

Tytti | 1010 comments Carrie wrote: "Hi, my name is Carrie and I'm currently a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Kingdom of Morocco."

I think everytime I hear "Peace Corps", I think of Dirty Dancing...

I have sometimes thought that it would have been interesting to go to a UN peacekeeping mission, but I should have gone to army to be able to do that. (I thought of that, too, but I would have been one of the first groups of women, then. We have a conscript army so for men it's mandatory, at least somehow.) My dad, too, had thought of going in his younger days but getting a substitute for his work would have been difficult.

Hey Carrie:

I am a PCV in Labasa, Fiji. I COS the end of October 2014. How long have you been there? What is your sector? I am suppose to be doing non-communicable disease but has been a struggle. Thank goodness for reading. Am in a town so not as easy getting to know people. And no, not near the beach.

message 222: by Carrie (new)

Carrie (yasmininmorocco) | 2 comments Sandy, I am about three months into my third year. I am a youth development volunteer but do a lot of work with artisans and women.

Tytti, the Peace Corps loves volunteers who join after retirement! You could still do it! A new couple just arrived in Morocco and they're in their 70s, no upper age limit.

I have a long way to go for my retirement. And I am not American, either, so... Sure, there are some similar agencys here, too, but I guess I am more military minded, as a daughter of an officer.

message 224: by Mark (new)

Mark Catalfano (cattfish) Hey. I have two favorite genres, sci-fi and classics. And one has been overwhelmed, so I'm trying to fix that! I'm subscribed to the Classic Tales podcast, narrated by the amazing BJ Harrison, which provides a nice short form of classics. Hoping to read along with long form some more.

On Saturdays you will find me riding with the cycling group.

Glad to see you all here.

message 232: by Mike (new)

Mike Lindemood Hello. My name is Mike Lindemood and, at the age of 73, I think it is about time for me to get caught up with some of the books I should have read many years ago. I have become a fairly avid reader since I retired three years ago and my main interests center around Historical Fiction, Crime (both true and fiction), and "Intelligent" Romance. I am familiar with most of the Classics and have a strong interest in exploring them, but I have a hard time choosing what I want to read first. This seems like a good way to get started. Looking forward to it!

message 235: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 6 comments Hi! I'm Caroline. I'm from Oregon. I have a Bachelor's and Master's in English (with an emphasis in film studies), so I spent a lot of time reading for school but not a lot reading for pleasure. I'm trying to read more, and the structure of book clubs has proven really helpful for me. I find that I often have the hardest time getting through the classics, as I tend to gravitate towards contemporary fiction, so this should help me check some books off my list.

message 236: by Katie (new)

Katie (undeadredhead) | 1 comments Hey everyone! My name is Katie, I'm 25, currently taking a break from college and working in retail because I cant decide what to do with myself, college is stupid expensive, and I have some health issues.

I used to be an avid reader in my tweens and teens, mostly because I used books as an escape. I havent been reading as much in the past few years and I really want to get back into it but its been difficult. My favorite genres used to be historical fiction and fantasy but lately I've noticed myself getting more into nonfiction and classics.

message 237: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Welcome, Caroline and Katie! Caroline, neat, now that's at least three English literature degree members! I'm looking forward to your conversations :).

Katie, no joke, college is so crazy stupid expensive! Enjoy your break, and best wishes for successful navigating of available financial aid. It is do-able, just not easy ;-).

Welcome to you both :)

Yep, we are quite proud of that. Practically anyone can study anything and anywhere they like if they pass the entrance exam. Finns have always valued education, it's about the only "natural resource" we have.

Katie, my youngest graduates from the uni next month. Been a long haul, but he is now headed to Med School, so more to go.

Hi Caroline, we are almost neighbors. Oregon & Idaho. I'll be over in Portland next month for some business.

Glad to have you both here.

message 242: by Lorena (new)

Lorena Beshello Hello everyone, I am Lorena from Albania and I am currently an MA student in International Relations and Diplomacy in a private American university in Croatia. I finished the BA studies in my hometown for Journalism and Communication. Obviously I like to mix things up :)

My passion for reading began since I was 5 years old, when I started to read and write. I remember my first book was "The Grimm's Fairy tales", and since then decided to go "book hunting" to my neighbors and relatives libraries :).

I was always attracted by classic literature, and still I am nowadays, however I enjoy reading other genres.

Until today I was pretty busy with the faculty assignments and readings, but now I have one week off. Thus I can't wait to finish some piled books in my shelf. Also I am happy to join this group and I hope we will recommend each other good books, and share our opinions. Regards ! :)

message 243: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Welcome, Lorena! My daughter grew up going to school with a Greek girl from Albania. They moved to Greece when she was three, then to the US a few years after. Crazy smart! She, like you, is in an advanced degree program. Science, though.

I love to read, and will read almost anything but self-help books. I'm looking forward to being a member of this group, and discussing some great classics! I plan on picking up A Clockwork Orange this weekend.

So how does it work really? Because here, once you graduate from "high school", you can start at the "Med school" in a university.

message 248: by Helen (new)

Helen | 10 comments Hi! I'm Helen from Alabama. I equally enjoy my daughters' YA books: Harry Potter, Hunger Games and recently the Divergent series; and classics like Les Miserables, Pride and Prejudice, The Brothers Karamazov and Gone With the Wind. Throw in some good non-fiction, too. Sometimes I like to be challenged when I read and sometimes I just want to be entertained. I'm all over the board! I've loved to read since childhood.
