MKay | 277 comments Welcome everyone new. I will say since I joined in January, I have really upped my reading-not just classics.

message 2352: by Iní (new)

Iní (ini6) Hello everyone, I'm Iní from Ireland. I'm relatively new to classics, so I figured I'd join a group to get some ideas of what to read and to help me along on my journey. I've been reading Frankenstein and absolutely loving the writing style.

message 2353: by Brina (new)

Brina Welcome Ini. And I agree with MKay. This group is getting me to read more. I have a list of classics to read mapped out for the summer.

Hi Iní & welcome to the group. This is a great group to join to get reacquainted with the classics. We are friendly & nonjudgemental. Happy reading.

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Iní, I'm glad you've joined. I loved Frankenstein, so I'm pleased to hear that your enjoying it too. I hope you find some more ideas for other classics to read, there's plenty to choose from here :)

message 2356: by Iní (new)

Iní (ini6) Thank you for the warm welcome, everyone. :)

Yes, Pink, it's really brilliant, so I'm looking forward to finishing it and putting my thoughts into a review. I've already stacked up a shelf with some classics, so it's working!

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) Hi Haelgeweer, It's good that you're willing to try new things outside of your comfort zone. Welcome to the group.

message 2358: by Susan O (new)

Susan O (sozmore) Hi! I'm Susan from North Carolina, USA. I go through phases when I read a lot of classics and am ready to pick them back up again. I'm not very good about planning ahead. I get distracted by other types of books, but I see a couple in May that I'm interested in and I might start The Hunchback of Notre-Dame to join in the long read. I look forward to hearing people's thoughts on the books.

Pink | 5491 comments Hi Cara, welcome to the group! I'm glad your English teacher has persuaded you to read some classics, there's plenty to choose from, for all different tastes. I hope you find something that suits you and look forward to chatting with you more :)

message 2360: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Hello everyone!

I'm Tiffany, from near Seattle. I joined the group because I saw that someone I follow is a member of the group, and I thought to myself, "Ooh! That's a group I have to join!" :)

I like to read classics -- I'm working my way through the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list (not going to read all of them, though; just the ones that sound good) -- among all my other reading. I like fiction, math, history, science, philosophy... kind of eclectic. I figure being a member of this group will either help me get through some of those classics I should read before I die, and/or give me others to talk to as I read them :)

message 2361: by Brina (new)

Brina Susan and Tiffany so glad you joined. Cara welcome. This group is motivating me to read more classics enjoy.

Jess (readingandwishing) | 1 comments Hello everyone! I'm Jess, 30, from the Philippines. I started reading mostly classics 2 years ago and never stopped since then. Architecture is my profession but I love literature. Hope to have more GR friends here! Cheers!

message 2368: by Feli Cat (new)

Feli Cat Hi Jess! I actually originally come from South East Asia too, but I'm in England now for uni. It's a shame but when I was living there, classics never seemed terribly popular in Singapore... always had a hard time finding the paper books in smaller local bookshops. So grateful for Project Gutenberg and an ereader!

I seem to remember that you enjoy audiobooks. Have you checked out Mil Nicholson's Dickens recordings on librivox? They're great, and free! Always a plus.

Erwin (erwsloof) | 2 comments Hey guys,

I'm Erwin a student from the Netherlands trying to catch up on some classics after my very bookless teenage years. This site has been a great help and I just found this group.

Seeing the books of the month and I'm very interrested in starting to read some of these books. Currently in the middle of The Song of Ice and Fire series but will try reading some other books in between these enormous volumes.

message 2373: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Courtney, yes I do listen to audiobooks. I'll have to check out Mil Nicholson's narration, as I often use librivox. Thanks for the tip :)

Welcome Erwin! I'm glad you're interested in some of our group reads and hope you join in with some :)

Don't say that! I just decided I wanted to learn Polish, (and read Polish classics) I didn't even make it to my first lesson and you're saying that!
Also, Welcome!

message 2381: by Emerson (new)

Emerson | 282 comments I just hope I'll be as motivated to learn polish as I was to learn english. I was hesitating, I loved both how polish and swedish sounded, and just a week back I found a "learn polish in 4 weeks" book in a giveaway box on the street, I don't believe I'll learn polish in 4 weeks but it sure was a hint to make my decision between the two :D

message 2382: by Brina (new)

Brina Kasia I'd love to learn Polish. I'm always up for the challenge of learning a new language :)

Only seven... We have 14-15 depending how you count them.

message 2385: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) Hi Katarzyna, Welcome to the group. I tutor immigrants in English as a volunteer. When I went for training for it at our local community college, we were given a short, intro Polish lesson. I think they were trying to show us how difficult it is for adults to learn to speak foreign languages. It was really hard. All I remember from it is "dobche." or something that sounded like that. The point was made. It gave us some insight into what the people we tutor are going through.

message 2386: by Elena (new)

Elena | 3 comments Hi! I'm Elena, and I'm interested in reading some of the classics. I've decided to read 5 classics (among my other books) for the Goodreads 2016 Challenge. I do have what I'll call concentration problems, so I was wondering if anyone could suggest any classics that might be good for me to start with.....ones that aren't really slow or wordy...that sort of thing. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks! Nice to meet y'all!

~Elena

message 2387: by Emerson (new)

Emerson | 282 comments Welcome Elena, there are classics for everyone but you give me the opportunity to mention The Count of Monte Cristo. It looks lengthy but it reads fast, there's always something happening, and once you get through the first chapter and get accustomed to the language, you won't find it wordy compared to others. I'll think about others… Once again welcome, I'm new here too.

message 2388: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Elena, I'm glad you've joined! If you're trying to read 5 classics but are worried about concentrating on longer books, I'd suggest something shorter! I'd also suggest trying a classic in a genre that you enjoy, what do you usually like to read? Fantasy, science-fiction, mystery, thriller, YA? There will be a classic book that relates to each of these genres and more. Also, how about trying some 20th century classics, which can be easier than reading long victorian novels. Although they can be great too! This list of Books that everyone should read at least once, is full of lots of easier to read classics, so that might give you some more ideas.

Hello, Elena! The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson, is a favorite of mine; it should keep your interest. And, it is a shorter read.

Hi and welcome Elena! Reading five classics for your challenge this year is a wonderful idea! Especially since you're not too familiar with them. I agree with Pink. Shorter is better! I also like the list that she linked. With that said, my suggestion is The Pearl byJohn Steinbeck. It's less than one hundred pages. Whatever you choose, I wish you good luck with your challenge! Enjoy and happy reading!

message 2391: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisarosenbergsachs) Hi Elena, Welcome to the group. I would suggest reading "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck. I don't think "To Kill a Mockingbird" is that long either.

I live in Evanston, a Chicago suburb. Chicago has a huge Polish population - the second outside Warsaw. A lot of signs here are written in English, Spanish, and Polish.

Welcome Elena! :o)

as a shortish, easy to read, humorous & entertaining classic I'd recommend Around the World in Eighty Days
