Eowyn83632 | 1 comments Hello everyone! I'm Eowyn, and I am a teenage girl living in the US. I decided a few months ago that I wanted to read more classics, but I am having some trouble motivating myself because of all the other books on my TBR list. I am hoping that joining this group and participating in challenges and discussions will encourage me to read classics more often. One of my favorite classics so far is the Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. I'm excited to be joining, and I look forward to reading and discussing lots of classics in the near future! :)

Shelbey (snazzyshelbey91) | 4 comments Hello, my name is Shelbey, I am 24 and live Texas. My favorite book is Madame Bovary with Crime and Punishment as a close second. I am in nursing school now working towards my RN. There is a lack of book clubs in my area so I am looking to read, re-read, and discuss the classics that I love so much. I will most likely be lurking for a while until I get a sense of things. I am really looking forward to joining in.

Welcome to the group Eowyn and Shelbey. We are excited to have both of you in the group. Feel free to lurk or join right in. This is a friendly group.

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Eowyn, glad to have you here. If you find that you don't have time for classics, but want to read more, perhaps try some modern classics or something shorter, as this seems less daunting than picking up a 700 page Victorian novel. We have a short story group read each month which might be a good place to start, but there's no pressure to join in with anything. Read whatever appeals to you and let us know if you find something you love, or hate!

Welcome Shelbey, glad you've joined too. Madame Bovary is a great book, though it took me some time to fall in love with it. As Kathy says, feel free to lurk or join in with whatever suits you. We have plenty going on, whether you like group reads, challenges, or just a friendly chat :)

Dee (pageatatime) Hi everyone! My name is Dara. I'm 26, living in the U.S. I've had a goodreads account for years, but am just starting to use it, so I'm trying to get the hang of things. As for info regarding my reading interests, I have a goal this year of building a habit to consistently read (literature) a little bit each day. I generally have the tendency to read a lot for a short period, then stop for months. I'm doing well so far.
I'm reading Sense and Sensibility right now for Women's History Month. I read Their Eyes Were Watching God last month for Black History Month/Valentine's Day. IDK if I'll continue with the themes, but it helps keep me motivated. I'm excited to join this group because I don't always have a way to engage with people of similar literary interest.

message 2232: by Larissa (new)

Larissa (larissaslibrary) Hi Everyone!

My name is Larissa. I live in beautiful Lake Tahoe. I have had a Good Reads account for a while now, but my boyfriend bought me a Kindle Paper White. I want to use Good Reads to help me connect with other book lovers and to find new books to read.

My reading preferences are all over the place. I love Dean Koontz and Stephen King, but I also have an obsession with Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Divergent and the like.

I am a student at the Lake Tahoe Community College and I am just finishing my first literature class since high school (which was six years ago). The class focused on literature from the Renaissance to the middle of the sixteenth century. We read things such as: East Indian poetry after Islam from authors like Kabir and Mirabai, Montaigne's essays, Don Quixote, the Heptameron, Jonathan Swift, Moliere, and so many more works of great literature.

I really want to broaden my reading horizons and connect to the classics so I can understand the writing that is being published today.

James Castle (pepecamello) | 25 comments Hey all. I'm in Texas.
I enjoy the classics, thriller/horror, and sci-fi/fantasy (particularly world building). Right now I'm working through Charles Dickens and Stephen King and liking them both a lot.
Some of my favorites are Crime and Punishment, Catch-22, and The Catcher in the Rye. My username comes from The Catcher in the Rye and the profile picture from Catch-22.
Dostoyevsky's The Idiot is great so I hope you guys enjoy that next month!
There's always tons of good classics (usually even free on the Kindle) but it's hard to choose what to read next so I'm hoping this group will help me with that. I look forward to participating in the nominations, voting, and discussions.

Welcome to all our new members, and a hello to Larissa. I went to Lake Tahoe Community College back when the campus was an old motel and the rooms were converted to classrooms. I think I graduated in 1982. They had just bought land for a new campus. I've never been back to see it.

message 2239: by Shingo (new)

Shingo Hello everyone! I'm a 24 years old from Italy and my diet is exlusively composed of Classics. When young I used to read a lot of scince-fiction, but now, I love Philip Dick alone from the genre. To find new classics I usually recourse to the "Le Monde" list or to the (better) "Bokkluben" one. But that's unhuman. I would rather read what you people suggest in this group! Anyway, I'm very fond of Dostoyevsky and I now you will enjoy "The Idiot" next month!

Louis Arroyo | 23 comments Hello Shingo and Dean.

Welcome to the group.

Shingo .... Philip K. Dick is an amazing writer, I love his short stories, very unusual and imaginative. At the moment I am working on a few books, but among them I have been reading The Idiot by Dostoyevsky.

Dean ... The Invisible Man is a good book, but its a little on the slow side. If you don't like, then you should put it down and read something else that holds your interest, IMHO, I think War of the Worlds is one of H.G. Wells best novels

I would recommend The Martian by Andy Weir, the book will hook you from the first paragraph.

Rallen | 1 comments Hello everyone – just wanted to introduce myself. I used to read a lot when I was younger but with modern life, the internet and social media generally I realised suddenly that I had not read books really for many years. I have set myself the challenge to read 52 books this year and I am loving it (Rebecca has been my favourite so far) so much so that I am racing through my challenge.

I have a particular love of classics and am now reading all the books I should have read, have always wanted to read or that have been recommended to me, this is the best thing I have done in years.

I love this site and hope to become more active in the group.

Hi Richard! Welcome to the group,

I had the same problem few years ago when I was so active in social networks for more than a year and forgot about the books. Hope you will complete the challenge. I also loved Rebecca and would like to suggest to you classics that I loved.

Welcome to our group, Richard.

While I never stopped reading, I have certainly allowed the internet to hijack some of my reading time. For example I spend too much time on Goodreads seeing what everyone else is reading. It's great that you are returning to books, and you can't go wrong with classics. Rebecca is wonderful, and I am sure you will find many others just as great. Enjoy your personal challenge!!

GW | 167 comments A big shout out to Catching up on Classics (and lots more!) where I've found many a reader just like me. I am relatively new to the group but I hope to gradually work in to more discussion with the members. So Hello, my name is Gary and I have a passion for reading the classics. Right now, I'm trying to finish David Copperfield to complete a list of one hundred world classics as written about in the book:
"The Book of Great Books: A Guide to 100 World Classics" Hardcover – April, 2001
by W. John Campbell
I average 55 books a year over all of which includes at least one classic. Can you imagine this research has taken over 25 years. I don't know what I'm going to do with all this book knowledge, but going back to school to do graduate work is being considered. I must admit when I graduated from college computers were just coming on in the world so I've never picked up on the niceties of the technology. I'm just a reader not a bibliophile. I enjoyed reading many posts on many different subjects and I hope to participate in the group reads. I especially enjoy the comments on books I've read. So here's to a great year of reading for all of us.

I'm glad you've all decided to join our group, whether you're a fan of classics, or trying to get into them and whether you're new to GR or have been here for years. This is a relaxed and friendly group and although we're all here for classics, we still have quite diverse reading tastes, which is great for discussing and discovering new books!

I hope to chat with you more soon and get to know you all :)
