Hello there:) Great to see so many people eager to read classics. My name's Nargus, from Australia. Ever since I was a kid, I loved to read. But then came a time that the only books I read were those that were assigned in class. There was just barely time to read (or so I thought). But then, my high school English teacher gave me a classic as a parting gift. The Tale of Two Cities ... and it was to be the beginning of a keen reading adventure, though slow in commencing. Even though we don't have all the time in the world to read, it's those small moments that count - when you just throw open a book, get cast off into another world, even if only for a few minutes. I have a particular interest in picking up classics, because these books generally promise excellent story telling and writing (having withstood the test of time and winning the approval of many to persist in publication). Anyway, back to why I'm joining this group - because it's one thing to read, and it's another to reflect. It can be nice to discuss certain aspects of books with others who have read them, and people have different views, which can be interesting and insightful. God willing, looking forward to reading some of these titles on the bookshelf!
p.s. I've also started a new blog (returntoclassics.wordpress.com), reflecting on some classics as I read them:) feel free to peruse and join the conversation

I'm Moritz from Aachen, Germany. Im 27 years old, currently studying clinical social work (master) in Aachen and im pretty new to the whole goodreads-thing. I've read some classics and I'm into fiction when it comes to genres. Although I stick mostly to classics I'm interested in new books aswell - especially american literature. I'm looking forward to some good recommendations and to share my own experience and passion with you!

Hi and welcome Jeremy! Don't sell yourself short Jeremy, I'm sure you'll add tremendous insight into the books that we read here, trust me! Just sit back, read and most importantly, enjoy yourself!

I'm glad you've joined our group, there's a much broader range than just older Victorian novels. It seems like The Island of Dr Moreau would be a great choice for you to bridge the gap between science fiction and classic. There's plenty of other group reads to choose from too, so take your pick, give something a try and let us know what you think, good or bad!

Hello and welcome Yusra! Well, this definetily the place to challenge yourself to read more classics! Plus, you get to participate in group discussions! I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here, so happy reading!

Welcome & we are so glad you have joined us. Looking forward to reading with you in March.

I used to read a lot when I was younger, but mainly just Sci-Fi/Fantasy, and last year I decided to make time to start reading again, but this time to take in a lot of Classics (ancient and modern) so I figure this is the ideal group for me!
I will read The Stranger this month, and probably Martian Chronicles next month, so watch out for me sticking in my 2-penn'orth... :o)

I'm Elise, 33, from SoCal. I majored in English but still feel underread, so I've been working on rectifying that over the past few years. My goal for 2016 is to read at least 52 books and 20,000 pages. I'm looking forward to discovering new favorites and participating in discussions.

I read a lot of non-fiction too, mainly history and psychology, and I'm interested in philosophy and science but haven't done much but dabble there. I don't read chick reads or romance or horror, sometimes I read fantasy like the late Terry Pratchett whose humour and wit I love. I like books that are written well and make me think.
I'm currently reading Resurrection by Leo Tolstoy. It's been sitting on my bookshelf for a very, very long time and I can't believe I've waited this long to pick it up, it may well take the top spot of that long list of favs. The man was a genius!
Looking forward to reading with you!
