Lesley Hi. I'm Lesley. I live in Scotland, just outside Edinburgh. I love reading, especially classics, but I've read less the past few years. I don't know if I could come up with a favourites list, it'd be too long, but off the top of my head....Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath spring to mind, as does The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje....oh and the Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides....and the Sunset Song trilogy by Lewis Grassic Gibbon...lots of favs....

I read a lot of non-fiction too, mainly history and psychology, and I'm interested in philosophy and science but haven't done much but dabble there. I don't read chick reads or romance or horror, sometimes I read fantasy like the late Terry Pratchett whose humour and wit I love. I like books that are written well and make me think.

I'm currently reading Resurrection by Leo Tolstoy. It's been sitting on my bookshelf for a very, very long time and I can't believe I've waited this long to pick it up, it may well take the top spot of that long list of favs. The man was a genius!

Looking forward to reading with you!

Hello there:) Great to see so many people eager to read classics. My name's Nargus, from Australia. Ever since I was a kid, I loved to read. But then came a time that the only books I read were those that were assigned in class. There was just barely time to read (or so I thought). But then, my high school English teacher gave me a classic as a parting gift. The Tale of Two Cities ... and it was to be the beginning of a keen reading adventure, though slow in commencing. Even though we don't have all the time in the world to read, it's those small moments that count - when you just throw open a book, get cast off into another world, even if only for a few minutes. I have a particular interest in picking up classics, because these books generally promise excellent story telling and writing (having withstood the test of time and winning the approval of many to persist in publication). Anyway, back to why I'm joining this group - because it's one thing to read, and it's another to reflect. It can be nice to discuss certain aspects of books with others who have read them, and people have different views, which can be interesting and insightful. God willing, looking forward to reading some of these titles on the bookshelf!

p.s. I've also started a new blog (returntoclassics.wordpress.com), reflecting on some classics as I read them:) feel free to peruse and join the conversation

Heather (hazeleyes1990) | 1 comments Hi there! I'm Heather and I'm a student from the UK! I have suddenly gained an interest in reading once again since I became a blogger, early this year. I enjoy Pride & Prejudice and Shakespear at school and I wish to read more novels after not reading for such a long time, apart from the odd true life story. Just joined GoodReads today and hoping it will help me get into more reading :)

Candace (cprimackqcom) | 57 comments Hi! I'm Candace! I've been on GR for a few years, but I've stuck mostly in my historical fiction and historical mystery groups (some fantasy). However, besides reading I love watching great TV like the current War and Peace on History, A&E, and Lifetime channels. I'm also enjoying Mercy Street (the show of a Union Hospital on a street by that name )on my absolute favorite channel, PBS. Watching these shows is what made me excited about reading some of the classics again, or some for the first time, and after a search, this group looked like the best fit for me. I'm looking forward to it and meeting you all!

Ray Bradbury has definitely written some classics. Classics can include Science Fiction & Fantasy too. Hope you can segue into more genres of classics with us.

message 2124: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Jeremy, I agree with Kathy, some of Bradbury's books would be described as modern classics. The Martian Chronicles has just won our March group read for the new school category.

I'm glad you've joined our group, there's a much broader range than just older Victorian novels. It seems like The Island of Dr Moreau would be a great choice for you to bridge the gap between science fiction and classic. There's plenty of other group reads to choose from too, so take your pick, give something a try and let us know what you think, good or bad!

Cay (obscurelybrooding) | 1 comments Hey everyone- my names Cay and I live in CA. I usually like to read classics, preferably victorian literature. My favorite author is Charlotte Bronte, her writing has influenced me greatly. I also like to draw and write. Most of my passion resides in writing and reading literature, but drawing and art is still one of my keenest pleasures. I can't find myself living without either of the two. I also take pleasure into reading Historical Fiction (which is rather obvious because of the latter I mentioned) and I'm a student. Its wonderful meeting you all!
