I have read many, but still have many on my TBR list. I'm hoping to get recommendations from this group and also join you in group reads. :)

Concepción Harris | 2 comments I'm Concepción and I prefer reading over television any day! Reading is one of my greatest joys and I am so happy to have found a group that enjoys classics as much as I do. I'm headed to Africa in 2 days time and am excited to tackle some of the books on this month's list during the flight! Wish me luck!

Pink | 5491 comments Hi Concepcion, welcome to the group, I'm glad you've joined! I hope you enjoy Africa, which country are you visiting? Am I right in saying you live in the US? That must be quite a long flight, but I'm sure it will be worth it. Good luck with your book choices, let us know what you think of them :)

message 2021: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Shorter Hi I'm sarah. I'm in Hamilton, New Zealand. I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy as my main stays but I like to have a few books at go at once to suit my mood. Within the classics I have a self style project running (and considering the list it will take me a few years) to study a list of BC classics in an aproximation of chronological order of the authors. So i'm looking forward to supplimenting these 2 things with the classics of this group as well.

Another Sarah who is a sci-fi/fantasy person, awesome! Welcome :)
Though I think we are going to have to start coming up with nicknames or something with all the Sarahs around here.

Welcome Sarah, I'd love to be in New Zealand right now....one day! I too like ancient classics, but don't make enough time to read them. Good luck with your personal challenge and I hope you enjoy the group :)

message 2028: by Ciera (new)

Ciera (cfree7) | 124 comments Hello everyone! My name is Ciera and I am from Colorado, USA.
I'm 19 and have only been reading classics for the past year. I use to be in the branch where I hated literature (only because I was forced to read it in schools which encroached on the books I actually wanted to read). I never really gave the classics a chance until I read the Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas which completely converted me. So far my favorites have been 1984, Jane Eyre, Dracula, Tom Sawyer, and of course The Count of Monte Cristo. I am currently reading Les Miserables and really enjoying it despite the daunting size. I'm so excited to join this group!

Hi Ciera! Welcome! We're excited that you joined the group! I was like you too. Hated reading the classics that were forced on me in school! I'm glad to say that that's not the case anymore! Love reading them now! Enjoy and happy reading!

Alexandra Pedro (alexandracpedro) Hey, everyone!
My name is Alexandra and I'm from Portugal. I return to be the avid reader I once was a little while ago. I read a little bit of everything and I'm really interested in reading more classics. Since I'm right now starting to use more Goodreads, I thought it would be fun to meet more people and to be inspired by you! I really enjoyed the ones you're reading currently and that was the cherry on top of the cake!
Although I won't be able to buy a lots of books, I'll try to manage to keep up with you since I already have some classics on my shelfs waiting to be read and I can find some low priced here in my city!
I'm really excited and I'm sure this will be fun :)
Have a nice day and be happy!

message 2033: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah Wolfson Hello there!

I'm Rebekah and live in Sunny Florida. The older I've become, the more avid reader I've become. I must admit that when I was a young lad in high school, there wasn't any reading requirements in my English classes! I know that sounds crazy, but since I wasn't in any English Honors or AP classes, there wasn't no reading requirements for me.

Long story short, I feel that I was missed out on many opportunities to learn about literature. There were some reading requirements in my middle school and college years, but I don't remember the books I read anymore. So now that I am older I have a big interest on reading some classics and see what I've missed out on!

I currently have the adventures of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer on audiobook and listen to that on my work commute. I also have an amazing library system that one branch that isn't too far for me promotes reading classics!

Welcome to the group. My English requirements that I remember were diagramming sentences and I only remember having to read a couple of books.

And you are so lucky to have an amazing library.

message 2036: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Pedro (alexandracpedro) Thanks to you all for your warm welcoming! I already wrote the books on my to-buy list and I'll search for them this weekend over some book shops! I want to say already that it's very nice that you have the upcoming books available in advance for people like me to go buy them!! Happy reading to everyone! :)

message 2037: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments You're welcome, we like to plan books in advance so it gives everyone time to buy or borrow a copy. Quite a few of the older classics are also in the public domain if you read on a kindle or computer. It's not my preferred method of reading, but the fact they're free copies certainly helps.

message 2038: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra Pedro (alexandracpedro) Oh, I didn't remember of that before! Thank you so much. I'll look for it there (although I do prefer the physical ones!).

Elizabeth (elizabethlk) | 35 comments Hello! My name is Elizabeth, and I live in Canada. I love books (obviously), and I also love comics, video games, film, television... Anything that has a story or can provide me with new knowledge.

I've been trying to read a wider variety of things in the past while (despite reading having become more difficult as a result of some health issues), which is part of what led me to this group. I need to read more classics.

Leni Iversen (leniverse) | 1285 comments Hi Ciera! Funny, my school reading experience was the opposite to yours. They didn't give us anything good to read and I was demonstratively reading Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, and Mark Twain (amongst others). The Count of Monte Cristo was one of my absolute favourites too, but I preferred The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to Tom Sawyer. Anyways, this group seems great for finding new favourites.

message 2046: by Paula W (new)

Paula W Hi, I'm Paula. I have a goal to read 40 books this year, so I thought that joining a few reading groups would help me achieve that goal. In addition to this group, I joined a feminist reading group. I am super excited about reading some classics that I missed along the way. I love that a short story is included every month, so that will definitely help me reach my goal. I know it's only January, but I have finished 2 books and am about 70% finished with the 3rd. I appreciate the opportunity to vote on the upcoming reads. I am very happy to have stumbled across this group!
