Hi Giulia, welcome to the group. If you don't mind sharing, what region of Italy are you from?
I've been to Venice, Verona and Rome so far, but hope to see more of the country at some point.
My one set of great-grandparents came from Sicily so that is on the "must visit" list at some point.

My name is Megan, I live in The great Pacific Northwest in Washington State. I am 25 a at home caregiver. And I was looking for a new book club cause I got kicked out of my one in town cause I wasn't able to make the book chats, lol. So I figured I would give online a try. And I picked this group cause I want to read the classics but they seem to not make the cut when it comes to things I want to read. I want to change that and expand my reading. So here I am.

Cool! My great-grandpa came over at 15. My great-grandma came over at 9. He went back to Sicily several times as an adult (the last being after WWII to bring his mother back to the states with him), she never did.

Giulia, that does sound absolutely beautiful. The countryside I saw on our drives from Innsbruck to Venice and then Venice to Verona and then Verona to Switzerland looked gorgeous. And yeah, it does often take someone else pointing that out to remind us how nice where we live is.

Pink | 5491 comments Welcome Megan, I'm sorry to hear you didn't have much success with your real life book group. I hope you have better success with the online format. It works great for me, as you can choose groups to suit your specific tastes and there's no strict requirement to read any books within a certain timescale. As for our group, it's great if you have time to join in with any of our group reads, but pick what suits you, or sit out options that don't appeal or you don't have time for. All book discussion threads stay open afterwards, so you can continue to comment if you read a book at a different time. Anyway, I hope you find some classics to enjoy with us :)

Yeah I am looking forward to it. I think doing a book club will end up working out better for me than having one in person. Online I can always make time to leave a comment or meet new people cause I always have my phone on me, lol.

Erin Adkinson Hello, I'm Erin from St. Louis MO. I tend to spend all my time playing catch up between work, marriage, household and my daughter and don't spend enough time on "me." So I wanted to join a bookclub to help motivate me to read more. I've always loved to read but just can't seem to find the time lately to do as much as I would like. I feel like I never did much with the classics, so this one caught my eye. Looking forward to reacquainting myself with them!

message 1677: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Hi Erin, welcome to the group! It sounds like you've definitely got your hands full, but I hope you find some free time to fit in a classic or two. Perhaps try some shorter classics if you're pushed for time, as they're not quite as daunting as the chunksters! Hope you find something that suits you and I look forward to discussing books with you :)

Powder River Rose (powderriverrose) | 148 comments Hello fellow classic book lovers my name is Rose and I live on the beautiful Oregon coast with my husband and the "evil twins." Since finding audiobooks I have become a voracious reader just as I was when growing up (well, I doubt I'm totally grown up yet ;) but audiobooks make it possible for me to read all the books I could ever want, whenever I want or can. I look forward to the books you offer up for discussions or just enjoyment. Thank you.

Audiobooks definitely can be nice!
Since I started having to wear glasses, I get a bad headache if I try to read in the car or on a bus. Audiobooks solve that problem. Still get to pass the time when dealing with long hours on the road (interstates look surprising the same just about everywhere so you can only look our the window so much without something to occupy the mind), but without the headache. I also like them when I am sick and have a hard time focusing to read.

1984 by George Orwell
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

What are some other books that I can read if I loved these? Thanks and I am happy that joined!

Hi Graham! We're happy you joined as well because this is the place to read and discuss classics! Our group will be reading 1984 as our November book. You should join in the conversations.

I think if you read and enjoyed 1984 you would also like Animal Farm. Have you ever read it?

In the meantime, happy reading and enjoy!

Excellent! You should look over the groups bookshelves to get a feel of the books that are being read and read some group discussions on the books. :)

message 1695: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Tytti, I find that my comprehension of audiobooks depends on what sort of book it is and what I'm doing at the time. If I sit still and listen my mind wanders, if I'm doing anything that takes thought, I don't take the book in. Mundane tasks work best for me, such as washing dishes, or pulling weeds, which don't take any thought.

Margo/Imogen, welcome to the group, I hope you enjoy it here :)

Graham, welcome also. My gut reaction if you like Dickens, Salinger and Orwell is to read more by those authors. I know Salinger wrote several books/short stories based around the same family, so they should be interesting. For non Orwell books similar to 1984, how about some dystopian classics such as We, Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange or Fahrenheit 451

message 1696: by Tytti (new)

Pink | 5491 comments I have a set of classic audiobooks on CD, but I haven't listened to them as I don't even have a CD player in the house. I could probably upload them to my computer, but I have no idea how I'd convert them to listen from my phone. Technology huh.
